Hello! I'm Alana, I'm 23 years old from Virginia, in the United States. I graduated college a couple years ago, but have been reluctant to jump into the churn of traditional work life. I was homeschooled as a child, with plenty of unstructured time in the woods or in the garden, and that background has led me to question the meaningfulness of the 9-5. Instead, I’m trying to cultivate an intentional approach to how I lead my life.
After graduating, I took a gap year in my hometown that I’ve absolutely adored. In that time I dove into dancing salsa and bachata, worked as a podcast producer for a local radio station, worked at a teahouse brewing traditional Japanese and Chinese teas, took classes with a local herbalist, grew multiple spring and fall gardens, began recognizing/identifying native plants, and spent quality time cultivating deep friendships. In that time, I’ve grown my sense of rootedness and home. And with that rootedness supporting me, I recognized it was time to move on, bring new energy into my life.
Travel has always been a passion of mine. I had my first solo travel experience at 18, when I went to Peru, and since then have traveled extensively through Latin America and Europe. I've just returned from a five month road trip across the United States, using WWOOF to work on farms in exchange for room/board. It was my first time exclusively using work stays to travel, and I absolutely loved it. I got to explore beautiful, rural areas I would have never come across otherwise, befriend people who knew the area like the back of their hand, and grow in skills such as permaculture, animal husbandry, carpentry, and even essential oil distilling.
So, as I head to Southeast Asia, a part of the world I've never been before, work stays are the obvious choice. I'm new to Workaway, but I have positive reviews from WWOOF hosts and Couchsurfing that I can share with you!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I've just come back from a long roadtrip across the U.S. where I worked on five different homesteads. Through that I experience I milked goats, built fences, grew vegetables for market, made cheese, jams, and jellies, canned and preserved, built sheds, wild harvested and distilled essential oils, among other things.

Outside of farming/permaculture, other knowledge includes:
producing and editing podcasts
writing for local newspapers
hospitality experience from work exchange at a Uruguayan hostel in Jan 2022
customer service experience as a barista/tea slinger
can make a great latte thanks to barista experience :)
fluency in Spanish, basics of conversational French
identifying/foraging wild and medicinal plants (esp in Virginia :))
dancing salsa and bachata!
