Description

Hello!

My name is Alyssa, though you can call me AJ if you’d like. I’m looking for experiences that feel genuine and inspiring.

I’m 31 years old this July and will be traveling throughout Asia beginning in June or early July 2026. I’m currently a teacher in St. Louis, Missouri (USA), and after this school year ends in May, I’ll be traveling full-time while supplementing my income with light online tutoring.

This next adventure will be my third Workaway experience. My first was at a vineyard in Texas in 2015, and my second was as an Au Pair in San Sebastián (Donostia), Spain in early 2020. I had originally planned to continue traveling through Europe for six months through Workaway opportunities, but decided to return home early due to COVID-19 pandemic. After six years, I’m excited to begin long-term traveling again, sharing my skills and learning from others!

I’m a passionate learner, a hard worker, and someone who genuinely enjoys active listening and helping wherever I’m needed. I have experience in a wide variety of roles, including:

- Teaching in public elementary schools and leading art classes through a non-profit
- Childcare and Au Pair work
- Farming, gardening, tea-making, and greenhouse work
- Environmental and outdoor labor such as building trails, planting trees, and using tools
- Disaster relief work, including tarping roofs and mucking/gutting homes
- Waitressing, bartending, barista work, and hospitality
- Helping elderly individuals in their homes
- Assisting runaway youth and families through social support programs
- Event planning and helping with concerts and community festivals
- Running a small plant business/selling at farmer's markets
- Working in recycling and waste reduction
- Animal care in shelters, as well as house and pet sitting settings

I’m especially interested in Workaway opportunities involving creative projects, building or hands-on work, gardening/farming, hospitality, event planning, and community-based projects. I’d also love to learn more about creating cheese, bread, teas, stained glass, and naturally sourced household products.

Outside of work, I enjoy dancing, singing and songwriting, reading and writing, arts and crafts, yoga, gardening, and spending time outdoors. I’m deeply interested in philosophy, sociology, quantum physics, spirituality, and, more simply, learning about nature and different ways of life.

The people closest to me would describe me as compassionate, patient, open-minded, and introspective. I've always seen travel as one of the best ways to grow, learn, and gain perspective. I enjoy volunteering because it allows me to give back and contribute, rather than passing through as nothing but a tourist.
