Hi!

I'm Zoe, an enthusiastic and hardworking young lady who absolutely LOVES anything to do with being outdoors, nature and wildlife. I come from a small town in the north of England which is surrounded by countryside and this has definitely inspired my love for nature. In high school I studied Psychology, Biology and French and I am taking a gap year before going to university in September 2025.

I really enjoy languages (I know a some German, a little Welsh as well as intermediate French!) and I would like to become more fluent in French over this next year or so.
I have studied French in school for 7 years and also taken two trips to France over the last 2 years. Firstly, I visited Nantes and worked for a week in a restaurant there and stayed in a host family and secondly in August 2024 I visited a town called Bagneres de Luchon in the Pyrenees where I enjoyed hiking in the mountains, learning about French heritage and participating in the annual 'Fete de Fleurs'.

I am a calm person who appreciates the quiet of the countryside but is no stranger to fun and I also think that going outside of your comfort zone can give you some of the best experiences of your life so I don't mind getting my hands dirty! Finally, I believe that having a healthy lifestyle and access to nature are so important, so I am looking forward to working with you!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I can speak English natively and have around B2 level French so should be able to communicate well with you. I enjoy outdoor work and physical labour is fine because I am fit and healthy and regularly go running to keep up my fitness levels. I like working with children and I have two younger brothers so I am used to reading stories and playing fun games! I have some experience with horses as I did horse riding for about 3 years but stopped several years ago because of studying and school exams but I really enjoy working with horses. I enjoy listening to music and I play piano and the Irish whistle!

I stayed for exactly a month (February 2025) with Antoine and Reine and their kids Yanis and Emma and it was overall a very positive experience! Daily tasks usually included feeding the sheep and hens, cleaning/household tasks and I often cooked lunch or baked something for the goûter which was a nice opportunity to use some of my cooking skills… read more and make them some traditional English food like scones and biscuits. Over the weeks they introduced me to the interesting Breton culture and included me in their daily life- they love having friends and neighbours over which is great to improve your French and meet new people.

Several times I had the opportunity to visit places in Brittany like St Malo and le Mont Saint Michel which were on my bucket list and they were fairly accessible as they let me borrow one of of their bicycles to cycle about 15 mins to the nearest town (Montreuil sur Ille) which also connects to Rennes. The actual surrounding area is just fields and wildlife which was nice to see as we entered springtime and I saw one of their lambs be born! The family is friendly and you have your own bedroom if you need some space for yourself. I spent quite a lot of time with the kids and showed them some fun English games or we played boardgames together and I often looked after them for a couple of hours whilst their Mum was at work. They also invited me to join them at a Breton dancing class on Friday evening and went to a Fest-Noz which is a traditional Breton festival which was very cool!

I am really grateful for them welcoming me into their home and it was a good first workaway stay for me (it was also their first time hosting), that being said I did plan to stay two months but ultimately chose to stay just one because there wasn't always a lot to do- especially when the kids were at school. This may not be a problem for you if you are a digital nomad or you want that time, however for me, I found it a bit boring since there isn't much to explore in the surrounding area and it could get a bit lonely if you are by yourself like I was (I'm sure this was also affected by the fact that I visited in February when there isn't much to do in the garden!). I also think that it was hard for their son to adapt to life with a Workawayer in the house and so he didn't get on with me which, especially towards the end got really tiring when his parents allowed him to disrespect a guest in the house.
In the end, it wasn't a big issue though and me and the family left on good terms- I learnt a lot about French/Breton culture and I hope they enjoyed learning some English from me- thank you Reine and Antoine!!
