Hello!

I'm Yuka! I'm originally from Japan, but I've been studying and working in the UK for four years since 2020. I study Natural Sciences (Biosciences, Earth Sciences and Geography) at Durham University as a thrid year student. I also work for an environmental consultancy as a one-year Industrial Placement in Bristol.

I love nature, travelling and adventure. I have a strong passion for working for local nature and community. That's the reason I joined Workaway. I'm a big hiker going to many mountains and hills in Japan, Switzerland and Scotland. I love wildlife and nature so I've volunteered for local conservation sites in the UK, Wildlife Trust, a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall, Durham Allotment Group and Botanic Garden Group. I enjoy working with people and sharing our experiences and time.

I love cooking/baking and tidying up too. When I shared a house with my housemates, I baked cakes and pastries weekly for our pudding. I love baking a big birthday cake too. I grew up in such a foody family and my parents taught me how to make bread, pasta and noodles from scratch! I love cooking Japanese food too. I've shared houses and stayed with many people such as host families during sixth form, my uni mates, friends and families across the UK. I always respect people's lifestyles and house rules to keep the place tidy or even make it cleaner!

Through Workaway and stay, I'd love to learn about the culture, people and local nature! Also, I'd love to share my experience in Japan and Japanese culture too!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have a wide variety of skills in fieldwork, digital skills, animal care and cooking!
I've worked for a local nature conservation group, UNESCO Natural Heritage Site Shiretoko in Japan, Environmental Consultancies and Music & Art Charity. I did much volunteering in both the UK and Japan, which gave me lots of skills and experience.

Fieldwork skills:
- Hand-on conservation skills (cutting trees, planting and coppicing): Gain from Durham Wildlife Ranger Volunteering
- Allotment & Gardening Skills: Worked as an allotment officer in my university college
- Mountain camping & Hiking: Worked for university research teams in Japanese Mountain
- Ecological survey & understanding: Worked as a seasonal surveyor
- Animal Care: Volunteered for local horse stable for 7 years , caring dogs for host families, looked after 20 monkeys in a sanctuary

Interpersonal Skills:
- Field Guide: Worked as field walker volunteer in Knepp (West Sussex in the UK)
- Visitor Guide: Worked in an information centre at the Japanese Conservation Center

I also love art and music!

My parents work for the music & arts industry! So, I'm always an artist too. I used to play the trumpet, violin and horn. I love drawing animals and nature from pictures that I took.
