  • Description

    Hey hey!

My name is Walden, I'm 21, and I'm from the US. I grew up in Alabama and I currently go to school in New Hampshire. I study history, and there's a lot of breadth and flexibility within my program and I don't need to focus on a particular area, but I'm most interested in the histories of capitalism and colonialism and how that intersects with agriculture. I'm spending this semester on exchange at University of Auckland, and I've been absolutely loving New Zealand!

I see travel as a way to enrich my education, have adventures, make memories, and see life from a myriad of perspectives. I've traveled to more than 30 states and have also been to Portugal, Spain, and France. But I'm not into tourism--I'd much rather immerse myself in the place I'm living and create meaningful connections with new people. That's why most of my travels have been through seasonal work, wwoof, and study abroad (and now workaway). I spent one summer working as a backpacking (tramping) guide in New Mexico, one winter working at a ski resort in Colorado, and one summer working as a waitress at a music venue in France.

I arrived in New Zealand in February, and since then I've explored a good bit of the North Island and the South Island. (Over the mid-semester break, I went on a 2-week hitchiking/tramping trip through the South Island!) But there's still so much to see and do! I'm not sure when/if I'll have the opportunity to come here again, so after the semester ends in June I'm staying in New Zealand for a few more weeks to explore.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Wilderness survival/outdoor skills: I grew up learning survival skills through Boy Scouts. I also spent a summer working as a wilderness survival/tramping guide in the mountains of New Mexico.

Farming/gardening: Last year I worked on an organic farm. I have some more experience from WWOOFing and from volunteering on community farms.

Cooking: I've been living on my own for 4 years now and I've amassed plenty of vegetarian recipes since then. I like Mexican, Indian, and things that use lots of beans, lentils, vegetables, etc.

Art: I have artistic skills and went to art school for several years, so I can help with art projects if needed.

I'm good at working independently, taking initiative, and problem-solving, and I'm a quick learner.
