I studied Chinese (Mandarin) as a minor in college and have a fascination with the history and culture. I speak Portuguese as a heritage language, which grants me limited proficiency in Spanish, which I also studied in grade school. I have a very small amount of knowledge of German, Swedish, and Turkish. I would love to improve my proficiency in any of these languages and to share what I know of them. Less practically, I studied a bit of Classical Chinese, Old English, and Old Norse in college.

I am a tall young man and believe I would be well-equipped to perform any duties involving manual labor. Having worked at a restaurant and in a kitchen at a hotel, I have experience in this department. Additionally, I have an aptitude for languages and hold a bachelor's degree in linguistics. I would be happy to share what I know of the languages I speak with any hosts or other workawayers and to learn in turn.

I like to read, with fantasy novels making up the bulk of what I read. I played soccer for much of my life and still enjoy it. I enjoy hang gliding. I greatly enjoy playing board games (my taste skews towards more social games and classic board games like chess and go) and tabletop games.

This was my first Workaway, and it was a great experience. I mostly spent my time working doing chores in the morning and then working on repairing fences that had been damaged by trees felled by Hurricane Helene. Chores included feeding waterfowl and cleaning the filter for their pond, feeding and watering chickens and collecting their eggs,… read more giving food and water to rabbits and guinea pigs, letting goats out of their stalls, giving food and water to parrots in the aviary, and feeding and watering the pigs. I also did some milking of the cows, but I honestly wasn't very good at it. Chris showed me how things worked around the farm, and I collaborated with him on various projects involving fences and gates, which I greatly enjoyed. My stay coincided with a US presidential election (fun!), and I spoke a good deal with David about it, among many other very enjoyable conversations. He clearly is much more knowledgeable of American politics than the average voter (not a high bar, but the margin really is very significant), and though I didn't talk about it as much with Chris, I got the impression he did, too. I also helped David with cooking (and did some almost-independent cooking to disastrous effect), giving me a chance to develop a skill that is really very underdeveloped in me. Both David and Chris told me several interesting stories of their time in Bostic and beyond. I came to this Workaway seeking a digital detox, not bringing a computer or smartphone, and Bostic is well-suited to such a thing. Bostic is quite rural, and if you don't bring those devices, you are limited to asking to use the computers at the public libraries, which close at 5 PM and are closed on the weekends. I had ample opportunity for reflection, both during times when I was doing work on the fence alone and when I was done for the day and could pace around the field near the cabin where I stayed. I was given a choice between staying in the cabin and staying in a trailer. Do be aware that the bed in the cabin was only accessible by ladder during my stay, and I had to parkour a bit using the fridge. Also note that Caroline, an older lady who lives on the property, uses the dishwasher and shower in the cabin. I wasn't thinking and ended up using her bar soap and shampoo. Don't do that. Also be mindful to always close the gate around David and Chris's residence whenever you enter or exit, as the dogs might fight otherwise. There were six dogs on the property. Two males lived in the house. Marvin is an old black dog and very sweet. Kilo is also sweet, but when he is excited, he will bite you, and not only bite you, but bite your skin in particular, and not only bite your skin, but bite it hard. The only way I found to make him stop is to give a loud and aggressive shout at him. Trying to push him away did not work for me.There are also two female dogs in the house, Phyllis (the one with the eyebrows) and Lady, and they're nice. Buddy lives outside the house. He is magnificent, but he was skittish around me and never let me pet him. Paris is a female poodle belonging to Caroline. There were also some cats on the property. I saw two, but there may have been four (?). Overall, I would highly recommend the place if you want a taste of rural America.
