I have worked as a cook for four months in a vegan yoga retreat. I have also worked as a housekeeper in a few different retreats and accommodation places. I have good cleaning skills, I also know the basis of permaculture and farm work.

This was my first solo Workaway experience, having previously travelled with a partner, so I was both excited and a little nervous.

Unfortunately, my experience was mixed.

She told me she never asks Workawayers to arrive on a Monday before ending the call, which left me feeling quite unsettled before I had even arrived.

On my first day, I let Nicky know both my expected arrival time at the bus stop and when I had arrived. She said she needed to go to the shops first, and I ended up waiting almost 40 minutes before being picked up.

Transport was also quite limited during my stay. We were driven to the supermarket once, and another Workawayer who had been there for a month told me she had also only been taken once. As a result, we mostly relied on the small supermarket at the bottom of the hill, which was considerably more expensive and involved a very steep walk.

I also found Nicky’s communication style to be quite blunt and direct. While this may simply be her personality, there were several occasions where it came across as dismissive or unintentionally rude.

One example was when three of us arranged with Nicky and Mick to be dropped off and later collected from a long hike nearby. We appreciated the offer, but when we called to be picked up, Nicky spoke as though she had never agreed to collect us. We ended up spending nearly two hours getting home on foot and by public transport.

On the positive side, the accommodation was comfortable, the location was beautiful, and the workload was fair and reasonable. The other Workawayers I met were also genuinely lovely people and were a highlight of my stay.

In the end, I decided to leave two weeks earlier than planned for two reasons. Firstly, I was consistently losing sleep because the room next to mine was often noisy late into the night, with phone calls around 2 a.m. and frequent loud snoring. Secondly, the Wi-Fi was not reliable enough for my online university studies, which made it difficult to keep up with my coursework.

When I told Nicky I needed to leave early, our interactions became very limited. She barely spoke to me, avoided eye contact, and did not say goodbye when I left.

Overall, there were definitely positive aspects to this Workaway, particularly the accommodation, location, reasonable work expectations, and the friendships I made with other volunteers. However, due to the communication, transport limitations, and the challenges that ultimately led me to leave early, it was not the right fit for me.
