Howdy! I’m Rhys (my given name), and I’m an inquisitive young Australian looking to find ways to connect and engage with other people in as sincere and heartfelt a way as possible. I’ve been working in customer and technical support for the past few years, but I’ve recently stepped away to get out and see more of the world.
I’d describe myself as a thoughtful, inquisitive and deeply analytical person. I love getting into the weeds talking with people about the things that drive them, getting to know the ‘why’ of their lives. I also really value opportunities to have involved discussions around social, political and cultural issues and areas of inquiry.
I’m a musician, and I write occasionally, and try and take opportunities to express myself creatively where I can! Playing the piano brings me a great deal of joy and solace, and I love to sing, and do so regularly!
I’ve been on the trail for the past few months, have spent some time in the US, and am now moving about Europe - currently in France. Looking to spend some time in one place for a little while, and to volunteer while I’m at it, and have a genuine cultural exchange!

I’ve been learning Greek for a while now, and am still very much a beginner, but am eager to continue to develop in this skill and area of my life (I’m half Greek by heritage). I also studied English Literature and would be happy to offer guidance to people based on my knowledge of my first language.

Oh, where to begin when speaking about my time in Livanates!
Annie & Evans were such wonderful and accomodating hosts, and they were mindful of and patient with me throughout my time at their beautiful property despite the persistence of some pretty challenging conditions. We had discussed prior to my arrival, that I would be staying with them in… read more the height of a particularly warm and dry season in the region. They were entirely forthright with me, advising that they wouldn’t normally have Workawayers come and stay at a time where the heat would really hamper any kind of productive work being done during the day. They were kind enough to take me on for a week anyhow after I reached out to them, and were really open to discussing with and including me in the process of working out how best I could make a contribution with respect to my needs and the weather.

The work wasn’t terribly challenging, and I think when I reflect on that time, I definitely had a bit of system shock given I hadn’t worked in a while at that point, and certainly hadn’t done any manual labour in the few years prior. Annie & Evans were really supportive, and would regularly check in to make sure I was doing okay, and to provide clear guidance for specific tasks I might have needed to help with on the property. Most of the work was pretty straightforward, a mixture of clearing chaff and scrub from land, watering and tending plants, feeding their beautiful animals, and helping with other odd jobs around the property as a part of their larger ongoing development of the land.

The weather was pristine, never a cloud in sight, but that meant that for the most part, the temperatures were pretty high, so we would usually start in on some work from the early morning and then wrap up by 11am, and then at times do a bit more work in the early evening when it had started to cool off. In my downtime, I got to spend a bit of time getting to know the surrounding area, and visiting Evia and parts of the coast (at Annie’s suggestion). I really loved getting to speak and spend time with Annie & Evans, and it felt really familiar and comfortable to interact with them after a really short time. It brought me a lot of comfort, and joy, to find people like them that I could relate to after spending a few months on my own away from home. We had some really beautiful and memorable conversations about a bunch of different aspects of our lives throughout our week together, over meals, between work and while spending some time down at the waterfront.

I’d happily and eagerly recommend Annie & Evans as hosts to anyone! I would certainly recommend, however, that prospective visitors take into account the realities of being in an isolated part of the country, along with the conditions and time of year you might decide to arrive. I’d say it’s important if you’re going to spend time in Livanates, to be aware that you are really only going to get out of the experience what you put into it. There is so much beauty and wonder to find and to absorb in the area, but the pace and the structure of life might end up being pretty far removed from what you’re accustomed to. I’d say it’s worth embracing it, and learning from it!

Annie & Evans were a really generous, kind and interesting couple to spend time with, I’m really thankful that they were willing to share their time and space with me, and to take an interest in my life. I will look back really fondly on my time there for the rest of my days, I feel fortunate to have felt like we made a sincere connection, and I really hope to return one day!
