Hey I'm Sarah!

I graduated from high school in 2022 and would now like to use 1 year until my studies to learn more about the world while traveling.

I love cozy evenings at home as much as I like to spend time with outdoor activities like biking, skiing and hiking. Much of my free time is dedicated to photography and my camera Elfie is by my side most of the time. I also enjoy baking and I am always available for a cup of tea in good company.
Playing the piano has been one of my passions since I was 7 years old, but now I'm ready to learn new things, languages and customs in addition to my own routines. Since I grew up with a big garden, I do not hesitate to lend a hand and tackle something, even if it seems challenging. Regardless of the weather.

At the moment I'm traveling with Erik, my boyfriend. From September to October 2022 we helped a family in Sweden as workawayers with renovation work, in the garden and with their sheep. We were then able to develop our technical skills at another host in Sweden from October to November. We helped with goats, handicrafts and other tasks on the farm. Working with wood was also important (firewood for the winter).
From November to early January 2023 we lived in Norway on a farm that is used for various events (e.g. Christmas parties, weddings, apartment rentals). We prepared food for up to 80 people, cleaned apartments, stood at the bar as bartenders and served.

In February 2023 we started a bikepacking tour through southern Spain and Portugal.
We had a nice workaway stay with a family in Austria and went back to Norway to work there again. I am excited and open to what else is waiting for me. :)

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I have been helping my parents in the garden since I was a child, although the tasks have changed over the years. Construction projects are just as much a part of it as the regular mowing of the lawn and raking leaves. I have taken care of children between the ages of 2 and 5 several times and am familiar with all kinds of household tasks. I also enjoy working with animals from hamsters to horses.

Even when it comes to more creative tasks, I'm open to everything. In November 2022 I was a photographer at the Hilmar Festival in Norway, which I really enjoyed. In Norway I was involved preparing a popup Cafe.
I look forward to new challenges and skills that I can learn and have fun with. :)

This was not my first workaway experience, but the best and better than I could ever imagine!
Me and my boyfriend (ErikKue) stayed for 2 months from November to January 2023 in the wintertime and came back in May to stay until July 2023 (2 month).

The Family is funny, lovely, open-minded, interested and typical Norwegian. Communication was most… read more of the time fantastic, and sometimes just too funny to handle. We could see ourselves learning more and more Norwegian vocabulary. Aslaug is good when it comes to explaining new tasks, plans, showing the Trondelag culture. She has a sense for human-knowledge and chose tasks due to our strength. Sometimes Erik and I chose what each of us is doing by ourselves for what needs to be done. The living situation was cozy and lovely: at first we felt like on a holiday in one of their apartments, then like an old Norwegian couple, and later all was like a second home.

The tasks are different (depending on the month, weather, events), for example: painting rooms, snow shoveling and preparing wood (in winter), wood work outside (in summer), help with groceries & preparing food for 30-80 people Events, decorating, cleaning apartments, washing bed clothes, photography for the website, cooking dinner, …… .
They have a small dog named Cassia, but she is more like the cat of the farm looking like a cute sheep sometimes (very easy, nice dog!).

Norwegian eating times are a bit different, from what we know:
·         “Lunsj”/breakfast between 10 - 11 am
·         Dinner (big warm meal) 3 - 4 pm (everyone is eating together)
·         Evening meal (Knekkebrod f.e.) 8 pm or later
I think after some days we got used to it, because we had breakfast for ourselves, as well as the evening meal. Aslaug is a very clever cook and always tries to cook healthy, nutritious, not so boring meals that are inspired by the Norwegian culture. We often ate rests from the events and parties, which was interesting! Norwegians eat a lot of meat, as it is stabilized in their culture, and so this family does. (mostly locally produced)

In summer, they try to spend as much time outside as possible! In Winter, it was so beautiful in the snow. We could go skiing and had -20 Degrees (lowest) some days! 3–4 hours of daylight was not so much, but definitely a great experience for body and soul. As well as midnight sun in summer: sun is setting, but it's not getting really dark for some weeks, what gave us so much energy! Sometimes we worked more than 5 hours a day, but then it's okay to have more free time later.

All in all it was such a wonderful, life changing, inspiring, funny, adventurous time for both of us. We found so many new friends on Yttervik Gard and a second family abroad. Tusen takk for everything and being so kind! I am sure, I will never lose some Norwegian habits. J

My boyfriend Erik and I owe 2 really nice weeks in Lenzing to Michi and Manuel.
We felt completely comfortable in this household with enough space for us alone, a petting cat, sweet and active children, good (vegetarian) food, an environmentally conscious mindset and lots of tips for free time. :)
