Description
Hello! I'm Otteline, but everyone calls me Otti. I’m a 24-year-old Dutch–French traveler currently living in Paris. I’m finishing my second bachelor’s degree in Psychology and already hold a bachelor’s in Social Sciences. After six years of university life, I’m planning to take a gap year to reconnect with nature, discover new places, and meet interesting people along the way.
I grew up moving around Europe quite a bit, which probably explains why I feel happiest with a backpack and no strict plan. As long as I have my backpack and a credit card, I’m ready to follow wherever the wind takes me.
I love traveling, learning about cultures, and especially languages. I speak Dutch, English, and French at a native level, and I also speak some German—although I must admit it often comes out sounding like Dutch with a German accent… luckily the Germans still understand me!
What makes me happy are simple things: counting individual grass sprigs in a field, walking barefoot through streams, trying new things, and spending time outdoors. I’m especially drawn to Central Asia for its philosophy, cultural richness, and the kindness of the people.
I adore horses and farm life, nothing makes me happier than shoveling manure, fixing fences, or helping out wherever I’m needed.
I’ve also done a bit of informal English teaching, helping colleagues at the restaurant where I work as a hostess, as well as the younger siblings of my French friends. I really enjoy sharing languages and learning from others too.
Mostly, I’m just curious about the world and the people in it. I’m easygoing, happy to help, and always up for a new adventure. -

Yes! languages are one of my biggest passions. I would be very happy to help teach English, and I can also help with French. I don’t have formal experience teaching French yet, but I’m sure I can figure it out with a bit of creativity. I can also teach Dutch, although I’m aware it might not be the most strategically useful language in the world—but who knows, it could still be fun! I really enjoy explaining languages in a relaxed and practical way, especially through conversation. From my small experiences helping friends and colleagues learn English, I’ve found that keeping things simple and enjoyable works best. At the same time, I’m always excited to learn new languages myself. I’m currently learning Mongolian and would love to keep improving it. I’m also curious about Russian, although I have to admit the grammar intimidates me a little—I would like to keep at least some of my sanity! I’m also very interested in learning Kazakh or Kyrgyz, as well as local dialects and everyday expressions. I believe knowing simple words like “hello,” “thank you,” “goodbye,” or even the essential “one beer please”. -

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
Languages are probably my most practical skill. I speak Dutch, English, and French fluently, and I also speak some German (though it sometimes sounds suspiciously like Dutch wearing a German coat). I love languages in general and really enjoy helping others learn. I’ve informally taught English to colleagues at the restaurant where I work and to younger siblings of friends, and I enjoy explaining things in a simple, fun, and adaptable way depending on the person.
Because of my studies in psychology and social sciences, I also enjoy analytical work, problem-solving, and organizing ideas. I’m comfortable with presentations, explaining concepts, and helping people understand things step by step.
My practical skills come a bit more from life experience. I grew up spending holidays on a family estate surrounded by hunters and nature, so fishing, handling animals, and getting my hands dirty are not things that scare me. Slaughtering animals, cleaning, or other “less glamorous” tasks are all part of the process in my mind—though I might need a small refresher since those experiences were when I was younger!
I didn’t grow up gardening much (city life tends to push you more toward decorating, culture, and fashion than vegetable patches), but I’m very eager to learn and happy to help with outdoor work. I enjoy physical tasks like building, fixing things, or helping around a farm. I’ve also helped my dad build furniture, so I’m comfortable with basic hands-on work and learning practical skills along the way.
Cooking-wise, I must confess that my current specialty is the classic student cuisine—pasta with pesto—but I would absolutely love to improve and learn proper cooking from people who know what they’re doing.
For the past four years I’ve worked as a hostess in a rather fancy restaurant in Paris, which has taught me a lot about communication, organization, and hospitality. Smiling, staying polite, and keeping calm even when people are hungry and a bit grumpy is definitely a skill I’ve mastered. -

**What Else**
I’m probably one of the least competitive people you’ll ever meet. I’m very happy just participating, learning, and doing things at my own pace rather than trying to “win” anything.
A big interest of mine is nature: animals, ecosystems, and the different ways humans can live alongside nature in a respectful and harmonious way. I’m always curious to learn more about the environment around me. Even though I’ve been a bit of a city mouse for the past six years, I still love being outdoors—fishing, hiking, watching birds, catching the occasional lizard, walking through mud, or simply lying in the grass for a nap.
I also enjoy creative and cultural things. I love jewelry, traditional clothing, and textiles, and I have a soft spot for ethical fur and handmade objects. I’ve tried sewing a bit as well (with very questionable results so far), but I enjoy learning and experimenting.
Simple pleasures make me happy: a good coffee in the morning, a cold beer at the end of the day, and occasionally a cigarette—always respectfully and with awareness of the people and environment around me (and I’m definitely not a big smoker).
I also really enjoy good conversations. I like discussing ideas, theories, philosophy, and life in general, asking questions, and hearing how other people see the world. -
