Description
Josiah (M, 23) and Natalie (F, 22), we are both from the western US and recent college graduates looking to explore before getting "real adult jobs!" We have both worked many different jobs including coffee shops, commercial sewing, TV station, and summer camps (Natalie) and bike repair, bus driving, orchestral music, and camp (Josiah). We both love to be outdoors, go climbing, hiking, biking, and (for Josiah) skiing. Josiah also loves to cook and we both like baking. Josiah is vegan and Natalie is gluten free and vegan-friendly. We really enjoy working with and being around kids and animals!

We both have experience working with kids, gardening, basic construction/carpentry and bicycle repair.
Natalie has skills in sewing (worked at a commercial sewing shop for a year), baking, art (especially painting and photography), and social media, and has a degree in journalism.
Josiah has a degree in environmental studies, skills in cooking, playing music (various string instruments and especially cello), driving commercial vehicles, repairing vehicles, carpentry, basic welding and machining, experience teaching climbing and other outdoor skills, and extensive bike repair knowledge.

We both care a lot about people and the planet and are always looking for ways to help and care for others. We are also Christians but we're not here to force anything on anyone and we support others doing whatever works for them.
We have been dating for about eight months and it seems to be a happy, long-term sort of relationship.
We also both enjoy playing card and board games, including Skip-bo, Pinochle, Five Crowns and would love to learn more! And we enjoy watching MacGyver and The Amazing Race from time to time, which is new to Josiah because he grew up without a TV.

We just spent five days at Darius and Angelina's place. It's a cool house in a beautiful area, and Darius welcomed us kindly and gave us full run of the kitchen and house. We did go into it knowing that we were going to have a bit of a different experience than their profile described because only Darius was there at the time, not the rest of the… read more family.

There were some things that made it a very challenging place for us to stay. First, the house was very much a work in progress, which is fine in theory (and is part of why we were there!), but didn't feel entirely safe to us – for example, there are spots in the floor upstairs which you could put a foot through if you weren't stepping carefully. And on the topic of safety, Darius had Josiah sand down a ceiling that he said he wouldn't do himself because of the risk to his lungs, and we thought it felt a bit ethically strange to ask someone else to do something you're not comfortable with because of the health risks.

We also tend to do better in an environment where concerns and conflicts can happen but don't dominate every conversation. That was our biggest struggle while staying here: conversations with Darius invariably turned into sessions of listening to loud and strongly-worded complaints about taxes, declining quality, corrupt governments, the sorry state of things in general, etc. Obviously, everyone has different views on life and different desires from their conversations, but if you are similar to us and prefer to focus your energy on fixing what you can rather than complaining about what you can't fix, a different workaway might be a better fit.

Our other main issue was food: Darius provided plenty of food, but was pressuring us to eat things that we physically can't (gluten for Natalie) or are ethically opposed to (animal products for Josiah). We know it's not super easy to cook gluten-free and vegan food, but we were happy to cook for ourselves and for him if he would have let us choose how to prepare our own food. If you have dietary restrictions that can't be flexible, this is probably not the place for you.

Overall, we do really appreciate Darius hosting us, and the work was enjoyable, with very reasonable expectations of hours worked, the surrounding area is very nice, and there are two very sweet cats :)

Our goal with writing this review isn't to vent our feelings, but just to hopefully help future workawayers find a place they will enjoy being, whether it's here or somewhere else. If you like mountain valleys and house projects and aren't scared by what we wrote above, it's a great place and we recommend it to you!
