Description
Hey! My name is Matthias De Backer. I come from the city of Ghent in Belgium. I'm on a journey right now to learn all about building a self-sufficient homestead and meeting like-minded people who would like to do the same.
I’m a sociable guy who loves being outdoors. From backpacking trips in France to having BBQ's and cosy campfire evenings with friends. I've always liked practicing sports including tennis, volleybal and brasilian jiu jitsu. The past year of 2025 I've dedicated to ultra hiking. Finishing the year with an 160km ultra hike in 43h05. Besides sports I've also been a member of a youth movement. The last couple of years I've worked as an environmental fieldworker and supervisor. Collecting soil/water samples and supervising remediation sites.
I appreciate good food and drinks. There’s nothing so far I didn’t like eating, only spicy food is my Achilles' heel :D. While I'm not a Michelin chef, I do know the basics and I like to cook together to bond with people. It's always nice to have people around to crack some jokes with. Humor is important.
In March 2018 I went to help for a month on a permaculture project in France. The month after I moved to an organic farm in Italy. Both great experiences full of learning. These projects triggered my interest in projects around self sufficiency and one day having my own self sufficient homestead.
Right now I'm interested in learning all about gardening, tending to farm animals and building homes with cob, straw, or other renewable materials. In general I'm really open to learning anything new.
I'd love to meet like-minded people who would also wanna start their own homestead/farm. So we can exchange ideas and maybe even stay connected for future collabs.
Thank you for reading my profile. I wish you a lovely day!

This lovely experience happened most of the time in the holy kingdom. It is located in the middle of a beautifull landscape of mountains. For sure in the beginning, as a Flat-arian guy, these gentle giants were very impressive :D. Luckily after a while you start to adapt to it. You feel in the middle of nature and so helping on the field is… read more
