My name is Clay. I was born and grew up in Florida and have lived in China for over 10 years. I try to approach life in a happy and positive way so I can roll with the punches, hopefully finding some humor along the way. I love my family. As a loving husband and father of 9 years old and besides homeschooling, I love outdoors, animals and hands on projects. I’d say my best talent is learning new techniques and making stuff work when it probably shouldn’t. I studied computer engineering and worked in many different roles such as:
Grew up ranching and working in a veterinary office as well as auto mechanical work
Volunteering for underprivileged school repair and teaching
Audio video systems design, CAD/CAM, engineering, and programming
Barn demolition for lumber recycling
Design furniture and other products for manufacturing
Minigolf facility design and course construction
Home renovation for flipping including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and building decks
Owned and operated an English as a second language school overseas
International trade and crypto trading(current)
The reason I want to travel is to experience other people’s lifestyles. Living and working like locals instead of like tourists and gaining a deep understanding of what their life is really like. As mentioned earlier, I grew up in South Florida in its diverse mixed cultural environment, I am very easy going and open minded.

Hi, my name is Yang Jiang but I go by Marrisa. I grew up in China and now live in Florida. I love travel, learning different cultures, exploring and finding the beauty in life and nature. I frequently enjoy cooking and trying new recipes in both Asian and local varieties that I can share with family and friends. I have a passion for sourcing ingredients that are fresh, healthy, and local. In my spare time I like gardening, photography, Yoga, wine and learning dance. I’m told I have a knack for getting things done quickly, being driven on projects and keeping everyone around me focused on the big picture.

The reason I want to travel is I have trouble sitting still too long and love to see new places, experience different lifestyles, and find new flavors. Experience tells me that the most interesting part of travel first hand engaging with real people and sharing. Not only can we build memories but also learn new points of view and ways of doing.

There is what you think a workaway host is like. There is what you hope a workaway host might be like. Then there is Steve and Kristin who exceed your wildest expectations.
Lets get the technical side out of the way first. They have been hosts so many times that they have it down to a science. Pitfalls from previous experiences(I suggest you ask… read more what happened) and likely Kristin’s experience as a teacher has led them to a structure they have built around the complication involved in regularly letting strangers loose in their home. You’ll find documentation on the do’s and don’ts as well as expectations of both guest and host. Some may not like structure, but their system does allow one to get comfortable easily in my opinion. You are not left wondering where the boundaries are, feel like you are pestering the host with too many questions, or worrying of accidentally misusing their stuff.
Now let’s get on to the feels. The first thing we noticed is they are some of the most empathetic and considerate people you might meet. Before we arrived, they had thought out what we should do and how to best get along based on our profile. We had conversations to further refine this. My wife Marrisa loves cooking and even before we arrived, she and Kristin were working out what ingredients they had, what to cook, and offered to reimburse us for picking up specialty ingredients on our way out of Seattle if we liked.
Not long after we got settled in, Kristin had figured out our daughter Olivia’s interests and had arranged for a STEM robot kit, a museum pass, and a park pass package at the Library. Kristin also provided her with tinker toys, crafting supplies and an erector set. Right on! She had also worked out some appropriate tasks with her interests and skills, mainly chicken care. Olivia was not only kept happily busy, but felt she was contributing and building her self-confidence. I think Olivia also loved how genuine Kristin is and her patience for never-ending barrage of questions. She must be an awesome and well-loved teacher!
Steve is hard working and amiable. Unfortunately, he was feeling ill much of the time and I could tell it really bothered him that he wasn’t able to help much on the deck(mind you, this was on top of running an election campaign.) He worried about my being stuck working alone, but looked like he was going to fall over! I felt it very considerate, but did my best to persuade him to rest.
When he is feeling well enough though, I thoroughly enjoyed chatting him up. I feel he is the type that doesn’t do things in a haphazard way. He is deeply contemplative and has done both research and thought everything through that he does. He doesn’t just make cider, but it is a blend of the right apple species for a specific taste and balance. He doesn’t just cook a pizza, but has a IR thermometer to make sure the oven is just the right temperature before dough hits stone. His passion shows in how his projects turn out and I was curious, and he was happy to share, so I learned allot as well as gained inspiration for my own projects in the future.
Now on to my wife Marrisa and Kristin; to put it simply, they just vibed. From cooking to canning to pickles to gardening, I could tell they enjoyed sharing knowledge and techniques. I remember Marrisa saying she never had a family member, in either of our families, to learn about these things. I think it is much more than knowledge though, as Kristen is a deeply warm and caring person to the point where you quickly feel like part of the family.
Overall, all of us were impacted by our time with Kristen and Steve in a lasting way. It is my first experience becoming close so quickly and we miss them and still chat after leaving. Olivia mentions Kristin often and asks when we will go back. Can’t wait to visit you guys again!

Clay, Marissa, and Olivia had only planned to stay for a week, but Steve got sick and the deck project Clay was helping with wasn’t finished, so they generously offered (and arranged with their next host) to stay a few extra days with us in order to make sure the deck got finished. Now, if that isn’t the sign of dedicated and thoughtful… read more Workawayers, I don’t know what is. We are extremely appreciative of the extra days they stayed, and of their immense help and support during a challenging ten days. If you’re only reading this far, here’s the final message—we recommend you host them!

Now, some specifics. Clay is incredibly smart and skilled at… well, probably a thousand things, but definitely on home projects. With Steve sick and in bed, Clay pretty much did the deck project single-handedly, which took creativity, some jerry-rigging, and a lot of accurate carpenter work. All through the ten days he had an easy going and cheerful attitude. He’s mellow, friendly, has a good sense of humor, and is fun to talk to. He has a broad and interesting background and contributes to the fun around the house.

Marissa is an amazing person, and right away I felt like I’d made a new friend for life—she’s fun and creative and on the ball. She is also thoughtful, seeing a need and taking care of things (like folding our laundry) while Steve was sick and I was at work. We were delighted with Marissa’s cooking! She cooked dinner (and some brunches) for us almost every day, and she has a great command of the kitchen. She keeps the kitchen clean while she cooks, too, and knows all the ins and outs of getting a full, multi-dish, meal on the table all at once. She took great care of all the appliances, etc, and I totally trust her not to ruin pots or burn things up (yes, after hosting over 80 Workawayers we have experienced a lot…). The best part was that Marissa’s dinners were Chinese food, at our request cuz’ we LOVE Asian cuisine. Though I’m sure she’s just as good at cooking other types of food, if you like Chinese food I definitely recommend you hand over your kitchen to Marissa and allow her to make dinners. (She even travels with her own “box-o-spices” that is full of all the things she needs to make you feel like you’re visiting a Chinese restaurant. They also brought a pile of groceries, which they wouldn’t take reimbursement for, so we got to sample things like fresh coconut, taro, bubble tea, and other treats we don’t normally get--- they are so generous.)

Olivia is almost ten, very independent, and creative. She can tell you about all kinds of things and imitate lots of animal sounds. Give that girl a box cutter and some cardboard and she will create a 3d TV with telescoping antennas and a plug. She has a quick mind and can engineer and create things with whatever’s at hand (plants, sticks, cardboard, clay, paper, and tape!). She took on caring for our chickens and I didn’t have to wonder if they’d been put out/let in each day because Olivia’s responsible (and she LOVED the chickens!). Of course, something I enjoyed most about Olivia is that she laughed at my jokes (she has a great sense of humor—just ask me!).

All in all, we genuinely enjoyed having this beautiful family here with us. Our happy hour and dinner conversations were fun, and it was easy to have them around. The help they all gave us is most appreciated and we look forward to the next time we get together (which we will!). We heartily recommend hosting them if you get the opportunity.
