Description
Christoph is a civil engineer who loves building, fixing, and hands-on projects. He recently built our chicken coop, and the year before that, he built our kitchen.

Magdalena is a ICU nurse currently studying psychotherapy. She grew up on a farm with cows, chickens, pigs, and dogs, so she is very comfortable around animals and used to manual work.

We’re both open-minded, respectful, and passionate about nature and animals. We treat people’s homes and property with great care, and we’re not afraid to get our hands dirty. We genuinely enjoy physical work and spending time outdoors.

Our 5-week stay with Ilana and Greg was simply unforgettable.

From the very first moment, we felt warmly welcomed into their beautiful log house in the Yukon wilderness. We had our own cozy apartment with bathroom, shower and kitchen on the ground floor, and the surroundings were absolutely breathtaking – endless nature all around, no neighbors… read more within 5 km or more, and Whitehorse about 50 minutes away. Whenever needed, we could use their truck to go shopping or run small errands, which gave us a lot of freedom.

Ilana and Greg are not only kind and generous, but also highly educated and open-minded people. Every day we enjoyed interesting and inspiring conversations with them. They live together with 24 wonderful sled dogs (actually 11 indoors, 13 outdoors), who are truly at the heart of this place.

For anyone who worries about sled dog welfare: this is the best possible life a dog could dream of. The dogs are deeply loved and cared for as family members, with plenty of space to play and run. Training is not forced but rather pure joy – we witnessed their excitement in September when preparing for the winter season: barking, jumping, trembling with anticipation, just waiting to run. Older dogs are gently retired and live inside the house as “seniors,” enjoying a well-deserved, happy retirement. Daily walks with different dogs were another highlight, combining nature, exercise, and great talks.

Our daily routine was very relaxed: usually feeding and taking care of the dogs around 8am (taking 30–45 minutes), walking them all together at 4pm, and feeding again afterward. The rest of the day was mostly free for us to enjoy. Occasionally we helped with small extra tasks like bringing recycling, mowing the lawn, or painting a balcony – not out of obligation, but because we truly felt like part of the household community and wanted to give something back for the kindness and hospitality we experienced. At the same time, the private apartment we had downstairs offered us plenty of privacy, which we really appreciated after several months of travelling.

The work with the dogs quickly became less like “work” and more like spending time with friends. After 5 weeks, saying goodbye was truly hard – not only to Ilana and Greg, but also to the 24 amazing dogs, each with their own unique and lovable personality.

If you are looking for nature, peace, kind and interesting hosts, and the joy of living and working with sled dogs – this place is absolutely perfect. We couldn’t have wished for a better experience.
