I really enjoyed my time and could not recommend this opportunity enough. In no particular order, here are some points about my stay:
- Everyone was extremely kind to me. This includes all the members of personnel that made me feel like I was part of the team from the very start. For instance, employees of the glamping resort invited me more than
… read more once to have lunch with them. Please be nice to them, you will not regret it. Nataly, Tal’s girlfriend was also very nice.
- Talgat is generous. For everything I did for him, he did more for me. Talgat cooked traditional dishes several times, and we made Beshbarmak together. Also, he taught me how to play backgammon. We played together a few times. He even showed me around the city and gave me tips on where to buy at the Green/Zelyony Bazar. On another day, we also went to the sauna together and talked a lot. Tal has been a friend to me.
- During my time there, I mainly changed beds, shovelled snow and checked tickets at the gondola lift. Shovelling was the only hard job, but I only did it 3/4 times over 3 weeks and to me it was akin to a workout.
- I never worked more than 3 hours a day. Outside of your working hours, you can do whatever you want. You can ski, go to the city, rest, have a walk etc. The only rules to keep in mind are that you can only ski for free on a working day and if you go there after work rather than before, you should stay in the volunteers’ room up until a certain time. Rest days are flexible and also depend on when they need help the most. Usually, the resort is busier on weekends.
- The gondola lift takes 20 minutes to bring you from Talgat’s house to the resort base camp and opens around 8:30. The resort is then open from 9am until 6pm. They close everything at 6pm so be on time for that unless you want to return by taxi or by foot (there is a path somewhere, even though walkability might depend on the season).
- Knowing Russian is not a must, but it is very helpful. As someone who needs to practice Russian, I felt like everyone was patient and nice to me. If you don’t know Russian or Kazakh, people at the resort will still try their best to communicate with you. However, do not expect everyone to speak English. Knowing some Russian/Kazakh basics might give you more opportunities.
- There is a small market 1 minute away from the house. On the first day Tal warned me not to ever buy foodfrom there that didn't come straight from a factory. One day, I was hungry, and I stupidly ended up buying a cheburek that was handmade there and got some food poisoning. Please be very careful with the food you get in that market and never get things they prepare themselves. I have heard that others before me have gotten food poisoning and became quite sick. Talgat will remind you, but I thought it would be useful to warn everyone. Also, they only accept cash or Kaspi, no cards.
- Talgat is keen on selecting candidates that would be a good fit and wants to know who they are. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please create a workaway profile and contact him through that. Introduce yourself a little bit. I don’t think you’ll be successful by contacting him outside of Workaway.
- If you need groceries and don’t want to go to the city or the minimarket, you can also order online. If you use the MagnumGo app, delivery to Tal’s house is free for any order above 6000 tenge.
- Having your own internet is not a requirement however I do recommend getting some data. Talgat’s house currently doesn’t have wifi and it might be useful to have internet to communicate with him during the day. When I arrived in Kazakhstan, I had an esim but ended up also buying a local sim at a store in Almaty. It made the whole experience easier. Alternatively, I think you can ask for the wifi password of the glamping camp or a café nearby when you start volunteering.
- To move around, I recommend downloading the Onay app, which you can use to pay for the bus. You can take bus 12 from Talgat’s house, which will bring you to the city centre in 40-60 minutes for 120 tenge (€ 0.22). Buses leave every 15 minutes.
It feels almost weird to see so many 5 star reviews but I can attest that it is all true. I am very glad to have met Tal and have had this opportunity.
