  • Description

Hi my name is Sreyashi but you can call me Koyel which is my nickname!:) I'm a daydreamer with a heart of gold who left her very secure 9 to 5 job working for an amazing arts centre in London to return to my hometown Kolkata, India to make it as an independent folk-art journalist. I am extremely passionate about learning about different cultures and communities across the world through Grassroot art forms which I believe is what keeps every human grounded to their identity and heritage, despite external hardships and challenges we may individually encounter. Folk-arts has the potential to inspire, educate and bring people together. I love to interact with people and learn about different cultures. I have freelanced for the BBC as a broadcaster, presenting and interviewing musicians but also platforming community stories, which I am driven to continue doing through my new and independent journalism outlet. Outside journalism, I have a wealth of hobbies including singing and playing the piano and ukulele, dancing (I love salsa and Bollywood!), reading, cooking, and painting. I speak French, Bengali, Hindi, English and basic Spanish (I am trying to learn as much as possible:)) I am always up to learn and pursue new kinds of Jobs or household chores that challenge my capabilities, providing me the opportunity to grow and diversify my skillset. I joined Workaway in hopes of being inspired and enriching my knowledge of different cultures through the opportunity to stay with a local community enveloped in nature. A chance I would otherwise perhaps never come across in my life:)

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have a wide range of skills that I would love to offer and put to use! I trained as a microbiologist and spent a significant amount of time in the creative industry as an events curator, journalist, PR and content creator, as part of which I have gained marketing and video making skills. I have taught children a variety of subjects (particularly Biology) but am skilled at teaching English as this is my first language. I am also a fluent in French and Bengali. I understand basic Hindi and have started to learn Spanish. I play the piano (grade 8) which I have also taught, including the Ukulele and a folk instrument called the Dotara. I am quite nifty with helping around the kitchen as I grew up helping my mother with grocery shopping and cooking (I make a mean curry!). I also love to get my hands dirty and paint! I've painted the walls of my bedroom and fixed several items from a broken fan, screwing bike wheels, readjusting ceiling lights, getting rid of mould, trying to get a sneaker out of and consequentially repairing the washing machine (I know!!!) which has a blessed me with a can do attitude towards home improvement and repair. I love giving people my time and company. My friends say I'm quite like a therapeutic puppy, because whilst I am humorous to be around I can very empathetic and always offer support and an ear when someone needs to talk. Another soft skill I can offer is my hospitality, and greeting people! I have curated and hosted several events through school societies, and my own 'Music unplugged clubs' and 'zinemaking workshops' where I bring people together to enjoy, socialise and feel a sense of belonging. I think the most important thing when it comes to new tasks and duties is to have an open mind! I'm flexible and am always up to learn on the go, so if you feel the above skills don't fit exactly in line with what you expect, don't hesitate to give me a chance as I can be sure to suprise :)

  • Autres infos...

I love to cycle, hike and go on trekking trails, cycling, play chess and engaging in any types of board games really! I'm very quick to think of a variety of new games with the bare minimum on my feet to keep things lively and as a past time. I can swim, and play tennis and badminton:) Though my favourite physical activity is Yoga, which I am well aversed with and confident to teach a class to anyone who would be interested! I also sing professionally, so teaching music or hosting music events is a big plus I can offer!:)
