I stayed with Satyam for one week that went by very fast. The only reason I didnt stay longer was I was a bit stressed and fatigued from my extended travels in the Indian subcontinent, otherwise i could have easily stayed several months here. I highly recommend the experience to everyone, and i can guarantee that you will enjoy yourself here, … read more especially if you like friendly family vibes and cultural exchange.

First I will start with some technical details:
- it is located in a small town that is easily accessible by train from varanasi. Nepal is also very very close. Satyam or one of his students will pick you up by motorcycle at the nearest station.
- you will be given 2 hearty meals per day as custom in rural india, with chai in the morning. Satyam will always make sure you are satisfied and not left hungry.
- i was given a spacious private room, which was very clean and comfortable (in my opinion), and it had a mosquito net
- i worked for about 2 hours or less per day. One hour teaching English to satyams very eager and well behaved students, and the rest of the time i washing dishes. Another time i was asked to give a slide show presentation about my country and travel experiences, which was very enjoyable.
- unlike other workaway experiences i had, I was never pressured for donations, fund raising, or to do anything I wasn't comfortable with. Satyam is simply very interested in your presence and it is obvious he is not trying to take advantage of his guests in any way.
- you will not get bored here because you will have so many friends and never feel lonely. On the other hand, if you need privacy, you can also stay in the room without anyone disturbing you.
- the "learning center" is not a school and there are no grades. It is a place for the children to be, and to develop themselves and their abilities with support. Most of the children go to ordinary schools during the day and come there afterwards. However, the center offers a very nice model as an alternative to the harsh indian school system. People interested in alternative education will definitely learn a lot from this experience.

Satyam is a very friendly person and something i like about him a lot is he loves to laugh. You will find it very easy to relate to him. He is always around and available to help you. I learned a lot about the region and Indian culture in general. His mother cooked all my meals, always asking me what i wanted to eat the next day, although since she was a great cook i prefered to be surprised. Without exaggeration i can say it was the best food i had during my entire experience in India. But the best part of the experience was being around the children, who very quickly become your family here, and i was more sad than i expected to be when i said goodbye to them. They are so sweet, well behaved and grateful of your presence.

There was however one big downside to my experience, which was having to say goodbye. 😔 I will miss all of you. Thank you Satyam, and Aunty and Uncle, for hosting me, and to vikky, gaur and the rest of you guys. Hope to see you guys again soon.

Very fun and very educational experience. You will learn a lot about Ecuador and Kichwa culture staying with Luzmila and her family. They are always laughing, joking and having fun. I stayed in Anan for 2 months, although I wished to stay much longer, I had problems obtaining a longer visa for Ecudaor. I would recommend this experience to absolutely anyone interested in getting to know the amazon rainforest and the indigenous cultures which inhabit it. The knowledge that the achuar people have of their surroundings is very … read more comprehensive, and you will learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the amazon rainforest basin which is the most biodiverse region on the planet. During my short time in Anan I can boast of having seen (or eaten 😆) at least 50 different species of birds, at least several hundred different species of insects, mollusks, and arachnids, and many different types of fish and mammals. If you are lucky you will see some of the more rare species of wild cats and jaguars, that are known for feeding on the chickens.
Achuar culture is equally rich, and you will learn a lot about their beliefs, traditions and also their fascinating history, as told by many elders who survived the tribal wars that ended several decades ago. You will also learn about and meet other nationalities that inhabit the rainforest such as the Shuar, Kichwa, and Woarani.
Here is my advice to anyone who wishes to come, the first two pieces being the most important,
1. Please bring a lot of bug spray as well as afterbite. This will give you a much more pleasant experience as the mosquitos are relentless, and you will be exposed to at least 7 different very species of blood sucking insects, as well as dozens of different species of wasps.
2. Please bring food with you from the city (Puyo), for example, you can bring several pounds of lentils, beans and rice, which are quite cheap. Diego and the other coordinators will show you where to buy the food and help you transport it to the community. It is very important to bring at least a little bit of food, especially if you are a vegetarian, because the community is very poor and will have difficulty feeding you. They do not have regular incomes, they live off what they can grow or hunt, which is often limited.
3. Ask Diego or the other community members what you can do in Anan to pass the time so that you can take advantage of your time there. Without planning ahead, you might get bored because you will often be left to your own devices. Tell them if you are interested in accompanying them on hunting and fishing trips, overnight treks, or a boat ride to some very beautiful areas of the rainforest, such as cueva de tucan, capawi, or to one of the many waterfalls which are close-by. The cost of gasoline for the boat trips will usually range from $5 to $20, and up to $100 for trips to very distant areas deep in in rainforest. There are also many medicinal plants which you can benefit from, and many ceremonies you can participate in, for a fraction of the cost normal in more touristic areas. Also, please ask Diego or the other coordinators to help you get prepared in Puyo, where they will meet you, before your trip to the community, which is 4 hours away. They will be happy to take you everywhere you need to go you to buy everything you need to buy, even if it takes the whole day.
All that having been said, it is not an easy experience, but it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, and after 2 months I felt as though I had only begun to discover all the wonders of the rainforest and the life of the people living in it. The most fun part was the feeling of friendship in the community, and the constant joking and fooling around, both with the kids and the adults. Achuar people have a very good sense of humor and no subject is off limits for them. They are very sweet people and will be extremely appreciative of your visit to the community, not just to teach English, but to help them learn about the outside world which they are very curious about. Like me, I think you will be touched by how much they care about their families, friends and their home the rainforest, which they are struggling to protect.
