Description

We are two friends from Telgte, Germany, a small town near Münster. Justus works as an educator and Jascha as a media producer. We are planning to spend a few months in New Zealand to work, gain practical experience and see new places. We are motivated, reliable and open to learning new tasks and meeting new people.

Justus hat Erfahrung in der Kinderbetreuung, kann einfache Mahlzeiten nach Rezepten kochen und hilft bei der grundlegenden Gartenarbeit.
Jascha hat ein gutes digitales Verständnis, Erfahrung mit sozialen Medien und arbeitet auch gerne im Garten. Wir sind zuverlässig, anpassungsfähig und unterstützen Sie gerne bei Bedarf.

In our free time, we enjoy playing board games, going hiking and swimming regularly. We like watching series, going to the cinema and listening to audiobooks. Justus also enjoys climbing and reading books. We are easy-going and enjoy spending time together and with others.

Daniela, Ray und Konnie waren eine tolle Hostfamilie. Super nett, rücksichtsvoll und flexibel. Wir haben uns vom ersten Tag an sehr wohlgefühlt.

Another great Workaway experience! Justus and Jascha arrived at the beginning of August and stayed with us for two months, so we really had the chance to get to know them well.

Their start in New Zealand wasn’t the easiest — their flights were delayed, their arrival was stressful, and of course they had jet lag to deal with — but they still … read more jumped straight into life with us, getting to know our family and the other Workawayers staying with us at the time and helping out wherever needed.

Over their two months here they got stuck into all sorts of jobs. They weeded, trimmed hedges, cut out and dug up sick plants, dealt with and burnt green waste, built shelves and helped with dishes and other jobs around the house. They were truly reliable and adaptable, and we could trust them to get on with things. They were open to learning things they hadn’t done before, but equally good at taking skills they already had and applying them in a completely new context. They were also always respectful of our home, our things and the property.

One thing we particularly loved was seeing Jascha arrive with little to no gardening experience and leave us actually wanting to work in that sector! It’s pretty cool when a Workaway experience can spark a completely new interest — and there are definitely worse things than discovering you enjoy working outside in the fresh air.

But Workaway for us is about much more than just the work, and we really enjoyed having both of them around. Justus and Jascha are funny, easy company and fitted in well with our family and the other people staying with us. Our daughter particularly enjoyed having them here and learned a few new card games from them which she is now completely obsessed with!

They were also incredibly easy to feed, which always makes life easier when you have people staying for a longer time! They happily ate pretty much anything and everything we cooked and were always appreciative of the meals.

They were very understanding when things didn’t quite go according to plan too. At one point both of our gas bottles ran out and, because of delays getting them refilled, we ended up without hot water for five days. They took it completely in their stride and never made an issue of it, which we really appreciated.

They really made the most of their time here, both at home and in the area around us. Some evenings were spent lighting a fire, sitting outside watching the stars, playing cards or making damper over the fire, while on other days they would finish what they were doing and head off for the afternoon to a local reserve, the cinema or somewhere else nearby. They definitely showed how much more you can get out of staying in our area when you have a car available and can just head off and explore.

Justus and Jascha were also our first Workawayers to use our place as their sole base for exploring the North Island. They would work for a few days and then head off exploring for a few days before coming back. We’d never had Workawayers do it this way before, but it worked really well. They always communicated their plans and checked that their dates worked for us too, which made the whole arrangement very easy.

After two months they had very much become part of everyday life here rather than simply being short-term guests. We had plenty of laughs, got a lot done, and really enjoyed getting to know them and being a small part of their New Zealand adventure.

Reliable, adaptable, respectful, funny and genuinely open to learning and trying new things — we’d happily recommend Justus and Jascha to other Workaway hosts and would absolutely welcome them back if their travels ever bring them our way again.

And Justus — we still need that onion cake recipe! 😉
