Description
I am an industrial engineer (mechanical engineering) who wants to travel through the beautiful landscape of New Zealand, work in different jobs together with a lot of interesting people and learn to speak English completely fluent. During my study and before I had many different jobs so that I am pretty handy in a lot of different fields from physical labor to construction, but also childcare (I have been a caretaker of a disabled teenager for over 8 years). Therefore, I hope that I will be able to learn a lot more, especially about the culture and mindset of the people living in New Zealand and to enjoy the landscape. I am highly motivated to apply my previously obtained knowledge to different jobs in different fields and to work together with interesting and nice people.

Joost was a fantastic fit for us. He is extremely practical, so can be left to do whatever is needed without any supervision necessary, petrol power tools no problem at all. He achieved a huge amount while he was here, got on very well with everyone and gave the dog a good workout. Enjoy your travels Joost, you are always welcome back. Prost!

First of all I want to say thanks to Doris, Brian and Daniel! This was my first workaway experience and I think it couldn't have been a better one. The whole family is extremely helpful and friendly, so that it was a really nice stay.

--- THE FAMILY ---
Doris is always in a good mood and trying to help you with all kind of stuff. If you want to… read more travel or searching for a job, she knows how you get the things started in a very smart way as she has a lot of experience by doing this. She is a great cook and I enjoyed her meals a lot. You are preparing your breakfast and dinner by your own, but Doris and Brian take care that you have everything you want and need for that, so that you won't become hungry at any time.
Brian is very handy with mechanical and construction issues. He told me how to do the renovation help in a very patient way and I was able to ask for help or instructions anytime, so that it was easy to do the tasks in the right way. Furthermore, he took me along when he was leaving the house for a trip and we you can have good discussions with him.
Daniel is a very smart, funny and pleasant person. It is not possible to not get along with him, as he is so friendly.

--- THE ACCOMMODATION ---
The accommodation is very nice. You have a big area of the basement with a bathroom (+ shower), huge bedroom and even a kitchen with a living room for yourself, so that you have your privacy after the day, if you want so. I was applying for several jobs and planing my further journey, so that I was very pleased about that. The accommodation is very clean and in a nice condition (just see the photos).

--- THE HELP---
I helped mostly independent after getting my instructions from Brian and figuring out how to do the tasks best. I was very flexible in my helping hours so that I was able to take a day off after doing some overtime (you won't do more hours then concerted). I was able to learn a lot about construction and renovation. The tasks were sometimes exhausting (as labor work normally is), but it was never to hard or to dangerous, so that I had a good time by doing it.

--- THE SPARE TIME ---
You can spend your spare time in the way you want to do. If you want your privacy, you have it. If you want to go out, there is are beautiful places and some cities nearby, for which you need a bicycle or a car. But when Doris or Brian are driving to the city or somewhere else, they will ask you to join them, so that you have the chance to go shopping or to see the surrounding area or even places which are further away as they do a trip to them.

I can just recommend this open minded and well traveled host family to every workawayer, as I really enjoyed the time here!
