Description
Hello, my name is Janneke. I'm 26 years old and live in the Netherlands. I am a music teacher who also have studied to become a primary school teacher. I did a solotravel in Indonesia for two months in March 2024, because my grandfather used to live there and I wanted to be more in touch with my grandfather's culture. I loved the trip, the culture and the people so much that want to return in March 2025 to improve my Indonesian speaking skills and my knowledge of the Indonesian history and culture.

Working with children, exploring nature and helping others who are often overlooked by society brings me joy in life. This is why I always look for interactive, fun ways of teaching (English). I also give seminars about executive functions (learning to cooperate, focus, lead and follow and train emotion regulation), in The Netherlands and Indonesia, about tools for students, teachers and parents on how to work with children with special needs and how to help develop executive functions.

I really want to contribute , but also really want to learn more about the culture in each region I travel. That is why I already followed a course in gamelan (pelok, slendro, bonang and kendang) in Semarang, learned more about Dongkrek in Madiun and learned (and practiced) lots and lots of Indonesian/ Javanese/ region based traditional (children) songs. I also really hope to learn more songs, which I also use to teach in the Netherlands to my children in elementary school in music class (and also because I love it just for my own experience!).
I am really eager in learning more Indonesian, so I also hope to get a chance to develop that more.I am nowhere near fluent, but I am able to have conversations in Indonesian without using English (which can be helpful in some situations).

I am a music teacher who can play multiple instruments such as trumpet, French horn, guitar, and piano. Singing is also a passion of mine. I conduct a children's choir where both the audience and the children in the choir are often infected by my enthusiasm. In addition, I also teach at a primary school. I'm not afraid of hard work and don't mind getting my hands dirty. In fact, I would love to contribute to building projects or work outdoors. I am also learning bahasa Indonesia and am really interested in learning more of that language. Saya ingin belajar lebih Bahasa Indonesia :)

I would like to bring my ukulele with me on my trip so I can make music with people I meet along the way. I am really looking forward to learning more about Indonesian culture and to experience the Indonesian way of life.

Participating at the project is 100% the best decision I ever made in my life.

Beforehand I was planning on staying for just three days, but because of the wonderful experiences, the love of the family and all the opportunities, I stayed for a week!

I stayed in the house of Ria (the founder of goodvillage project) and her incredible family.

All… read more of the family unbelievably kind and selfless and they really made me a member of their family. Because of their hospitality, I learned so much about the Indonesian and Javanese culture. Ria and their children taught me Indonesian songs and words, I learned a lot about the Javanese dances because of Ria and her oldest daughter. I learned a lot about the cooking and their cooking business because of Ria , the youngest daughter, Ria's brother and Ria's mother. But they also taught me how warm and loving and open minded their family is, and really working hard to make the future bright and more equal. They also get a lot of people over the floor in their garage (because they have a food stand), where you also have the opportunity to meet a lot of new people and learn from them. I learned a lot of Indonesian words from the boys that were ordering noodles in the stand, made music with a lot of people and played games with them. Such a wonderful experience.

Not only inside the house you will get a lot of the taste of culture. Ria and the family really take their time to give you the best cultural experience in Malang. We visited mount Bromo, the waterfalls and made batik. They also give you enough free time and freedom to discover places on your own, if you prefer that.

The working experience you get is incredibly meaningful and diverse. I went to an islamic elementary school to reach English, a kindergarten, a high school, a teenage gathering, a university and started a children choir. You feel seen and taken seriously by Ria, who really is eager to learn more about your expertise. She likes to cooperate with you and give you a spot in her programme. I really appreciate her enthousiasm and willingness to learn new things. Therefore she is also very open minded and able to think out of the box. The passion and dreams she has for this project are admiring and really touching, and your contribution can help her reach those goals and dreams.

So, if you want.....,

-A heartwarming experience with a real host family

-A delicate taste of the Javanese and Indonesian culture

-a fantastic diverse working experience

-to contribute to the Indonesian society

-equal rights

-delicious food!!!

....You should really go for this project. Even if you attend just one day, this will make an impact that you will carry with you with the rest of your life.

Volunteering here was my first experience travelling abroad, and I couldn't love it more. I got so many wonderful opportunities during my time here. All the people were so kind and caring, that they soon helped me feel at ease in such a different country with a different culture and language. A perfect start of my Indonesian journey!

I was a… read more little bit insecure about the traveling itself beforehand, because it was my first travel out of Europe.
But the clear communication and a videocall beforehand, made me feel more reassured to do the travelling.
They will help you with everything you need a hand with, even after your stay.

I got so many opportunities at the work; I visited multiple schools, did reading sessions, music lessons and get inspired by the school programs I was lucky to attend. Besides that, are all the teachers also very hospitable and kind and also really like to share the culture with you.

They also offer every global volunteer to host a Direct sharing session, where you can share your expertise with the students.
I really felt that they were interested in what you would offer them, and are very open minded and eager to learn new things.
Even if they are not used to it before.

In my experience, I really bonded the most with the interns during the cooking, because it was a nice environment to learn Indonesian words. Sometimes, because of the language barrier, some people would not feel at ease to speak English.
But during the cooking the conversations really started.

Besides offering you great work experience, they also offer a lot of cultural experience. They invited me to go on a holiday trip to Blitar. It was the trip where I bonded the most with the people. But if you want to mind your own thing, they will also be very respectful of that.

One of the unique opportunities here, is that you will be placed in a host family. I really, really love it. You learn so much about the culture and religion in a very respectful way. They understand that the culture is new for you, and are very patience and kind with you. Even after the workaway I still have contact with them and was even invited to spend more time with them. I can not describe how welcoming and thoughtful they are. I have witnessed the truest form of kindness in this family.

I also got new ideas, plans and meetings with new friends after my visit. There are a lot of new opportunities available with my further travel after my experience here. It was a total life changing experience for me.
