Hello! I’m Isobel (she/her).

I'm here seeking connection, challenge, and a more active lifestyle. I care deeply about people and our planet. More about me! I’m vegan. I believe that all life is equal and that everyone deserves a safe space to exist. I am also LGBT and would love to connect more to our vibrant community. I try to live with an open mind and an open heart. I am very neat and tidy and value a clean environment. I appreciate effective communication and will let you know upfront whenever things change.

Schools and Activism
I regularly volunteer in schools. I have previously taught lessons I created about climate change (for ages 9-11). I am currently an ambassador for a UK charity, where I go into schools all around the country to tell my story about what it was like growing up as an LGBT person (for ages 11-18). I also write articles and speak on panels for the charity.
Skills learned: public speaking, teaching children, confident discussing LGBT topics

Science and Environmentalism
I studied ‘Biology with Science and Society’ where I learnt about ecology, environmentalism, and the intersection of science and society. I would love to continue learning about these topics. I have recently worked for 2 years certifying buildings against climate change standards. As part of this I created multiple training programmes.
Skills learned: collecting data/scientific projects, organisation, customer service

Hobbies
I love cooking and baking vegan food. I can follow recipes well and would love to improve this skill so I can start being more creative with food!
I make vlogs for myself and my friends. This includes video editing, photography etc. I also love all things music: to dance to, play, and enjoy it!

This place is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

I learnt so much about Buddhism, community, and what I’m capable of. I left with a brand new perspective on life and a real motivation to create the reality that I want.

The work was really varied and enjoyable. There was weeding, baking, working a festival booth, helping to set up spaces,… read more lifting/moving things around, catering, cleaning, washing dishes, general chores around the village. The other compulsory activities were meditation, yebul (service/ceremony), study (like a seminar), teatimes, and 108 bows each evening.

Even though we had a strict schedule to follow, on many days something unexpected came along and the routine went out the window. If you simply surrender to the flow of the community, the spontaneity is really enjoyable. It also taught me acceptance in a practical, everyday way- if you can embrace whatever you are asked to do, you can kind of conquer anything. What a valuable lesson.

The food here is absolutely incredible, I’ve never eaten so well in my life. Though most meals were completely vegan, note that they don’t currently accept strict vegans. You will be asked to be flexible during the time that you are at the Village. As a vegan myself, I did my best with this, but this was a of contention at times. If this concerns you, free to ask Doahn beopwoonim questions before applying or accepting your place here! She will explain it well and then you can decide for yourself.

Also be aware that the hours are very long and sometimes there is very little sleep. (Some days I got 2 or 3 hours). This was a challenge but also not as hard as I thought. I was able to trust the community and just go with it!

Only a few people at the village speak English, so it will really help if you know some Korean, but it’s not essential. You’ll feel the support of the community either way, and Doahn beopwoonim will kindly translate teatimes for you.

Overall, I am so grateful I got to meet the wonderful members of the community and experience their way of living. As I left this place, I felt more open, more grateful, more excited by life, and I found myself wanting to give to others without promise of return. I recommend this to anyone seeking challenge, something different from their day-to-day life, and who is willing to completely open themselves to the community way. You’ll see for yourself what magic emerges when you let go!
