Hello world! I am Gerard, a graduate student of philosophy from Spain. It is my first time here in Workaway, so I am both thrilled and a little nervous at the same time. What may I say about myself? Well, I could begin with something like "Since I was a kid, I liked to travel a lot" and so on, and although that would be a very nice introduction, I feel that instead it has been side-by-side with me maturing through adulthood that my desire for stepping in and dwelling in unknown places has been unceasingly growing more and more. So, if I were to find one aspect that truly defines me, I would say that I am an “aesthetic person”. And what does this mean, you may ask? Well, at least from what I have been understanding about myself throughout the years, it means that I like to be affected (from ancient Greek aisthèsis, “sensation”) by what surrounds me. I like to chat and meet new people who can shake my local view of things, as I believe that is the purpose of intercultural communication. I like to work in something that I find interesting and self-nurturing, even if it may be not so easy sometimes (if everything was utterly comfortable, where to find amusement?). And, probably in what you may have guessed from the start with the word “aesthetic” I like beautiful and awesome things, may it be handcrafted or crafted by nature millennia ago. That is the main reason why I have come to love traveling so much: because it exponentially increases the number of experiences that the world and other people can bestow upon me, and for which I can also humbly offer something in return. This is both on a professional level (as a philosopher my main job is to teach, read, and write; so, the more I move the more to discover and reflect upon it) and a personal level. This is also the reason why I plan to keep learning different languages and cultures as years go by and I would also love to find people to share them with, as my main bag for my wandering in this amazing yet strange world we live in.

I have been studying Japanese for more than 6 years now, to the level I can maintain a daily conversation without struggling too much. So it is always nice to find someone to practice with. As my main research topic is Asian philosophies and cultures, any sort of language or knowledge related to them also deeply interests me (Chinese, Mongolian, etc.). Other languages like German or Russian are also welcome. In return, I can teach you Spanish or English anytime and even Catalan, from the region where I am from, if you are curious about it.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Okay, let's start with what I can do and offer:

-Directly coming from my job and studies, I deem myself to be quite notable at teaching things to other people, as well as reading and writing for my own desire or other's sake. I have also been working in customer service at a museum for quite a time, so I think I am capable enough of customer service-related activities, such as guiding, explaining, and humbly treating people.

-For more practical things, I think I am good at labors that require time and meticulousness. I also can do work that requires strength, though I am probably not the best at it. One of my objectives of doing a Workaway is to take a break from day-to-day screens and laptops, so I would be more than glad to take part in more natural and handcraft activities.

-Finally, it can be said that a habit of mine is to always find a way to be original. So I can become quite a handy person if you are looking for artistic or creative help. And that also goes for cooking, so I can at least treat you with a nice meal.

Apart from all of this, I am a friendly, calm, down-to-earth, and talkative person who is always ready for both an intellectual discussion and a daily affairs chat.

My main hobbies are reading, listening to music, or, when I am at home, playing video games. But what I would love the most is if you take me to see your neighborhood, your village, that abandoned and spooky train station near your town, or the wondrous precipices that stand at the shores of your region (or anything more you find likable too). Also, people tend to regard me nearly as a human encyclopedia, so ask me anything and I will try to live up to that title or, on the contrary, recall again that there will be always something new to learn from somebody.
