  • Description

e are a couple ( age 30 and 31) excited to volunteer in Japan this summer, hoping to contribute our energy and skills to a meaningful, culturally rich experience. We’re both hands-on, hardworking, curious, and eager to learn through new cultural experiences.

    George:
I’m a fully qualified architect, based between San Francisco and London, with a strong interest in the connection between design and craft. I’m also a carpenter and have designed and built a number of timber-based projects—including a sauna, a two-bedroom house, an outdoor social space for people experiencing homelessness, and a series of wooden sleeping pods made from plywood. I’ve also taken on a range of smaller carpentry and repair projects.
While I’d love to contribute my building and carpentry skills—especially if there’s an opportunity to learn traditional Japanese techniques—I’m ultimately open to any kind of work. Whether it’s gardening, farming, maintenance, or helping around the house, I’m eager to gain hands-on experience and learn about Japanese culture in an authentic, grounded way.

I love matcha tea and drink it every morning, as well as yoga, reading, cycling, meditation and travelling. Also love to cook.

    Avery:

I’m a nurse based in San Francisco who loves working with my hands and being creative. I have a particular interest in ceramics and am an active member of a local studio, where I spend time throwing and glazing about three times a week. Crafting is a big part of how I unwind and express myself.

I’m looking for any experience that allows me to immerse myself in Japanese culture—whether that’s through craft, cooking, gardening, or simply spending time with people in a new setting. My grandmother was Japanese—born and raised on Kyushu. Unfortunately she passed when I was young so I never got to learn about Japan from her. I’ve always been drawn towards Japanese culture and I’m eager to be in touch with my Japanese roots!

I’m adaptable, enthusiastic, and happy to help however I can so very open to any type of work. I love gardening, being outside, spending time with children, working with my hands.
