  • Description

Hi! I am a hiker, climber, and aspiring mountaineer, with a very healthy love of travelling. I study engineering in the UK and I’m spending the next 10 months in New Zealand on a university exchange programme, trying to appreciate as much of the nature in this wonderful part of the world as I can!
I’m a hands-on, adventurous person, I love to learn on the go and meet people who can teach me something new, or with whom I can share a new experience. I love hearing people’s stories (though I’m not a great storyteller myself) and for me that has become the most important part of travelling.
The outdoors is one of my strongest motivators: I am irresistibly drawn to the sunrises and the starry nights, the rainy, exhausting hikes, the awe of an incredible view, and that feeling of being at home with the natural environment. It’s the driving force for most of my decisions, “what can I do to be out there in the wild…?”
I like to look inwards too, and work towards healthy reading habits, meditation and self-development in many of its forms.
More practically, all of that translates to me being a very active person (though I think slowing down is a very good use of time) and an all rounder. I enjoy sports and reading, cooking and wild swimming, DIY and tending to plants or animals. Putting hard days of work is something I can really appreciate (within reason!), especially when there is a project or goal that could really help someone out.
Raised in the UK by parents of Venezuelan origin, I am fluent in both English and Spanish, and have picked up a good level of German and some French during my time at school. I’m keen to keep learning and practicing languages, and would really like to become fluent in at least 4 throughout my life…
Music is very close to my heart as I’ve played the French Horn in informal orchestras for many years: the musical history and culture of new places and people is always fascinating to me.
Being nature oriented, sustainability is very close to my heart too and I take care to reduce my impacts as much as I can whenever I can. I’m determined to take my career in engineering towards working with renewable energy or design of sustainable materials, and I make sure those attitudes are present in the things I do outside of my studies as well, like picking up litter from local climbing crags when I climb outdoors.
My dream at the moment is to one day live almost completely self-sufficiently in a beautiful part of the world (TBD), where I’m not too far from civilisation, but enough that I can see the stars at night; ideally close to the mountains and the sea. Then again, don’t we all want that…

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I currently study Materials Science and Engineering, and have spent a year prior to university working in the 3D printing industry. Besides this I’m taking courses in Geology and Earth Science in my time as an exchange student in New Zealand.
My interest in engineering has come from being very practically minded and good with tools: I built a bicycle during the covid lockdowns and would be the one taking care of any DIY at home, as well as small woodworking projects from time to time.
I spent several years working in a small independent garden shop, where I would often run the shop on my own, so I am a confident communicator and an organised, hard working person. Alongside that I learnt a little on how to look after plants.
For 3 years I also volunteered at a charity shop near my home in the UK (Barnardos Children’s Charity), working mainly to sort donations and organise the shop. I greatly enjoyed my time here and it has left me wanting do have more time to volunteer: there was a great sense of companionship with my coworkers and my boss, and - more so than my retail job - it felt like the work had a purpose, however dull sorting clothing donations could be sometimes.
I speak English and Spanish fluently (Venezuelan background, grew up in the UK), and I have very basic French and Portuguese. I love learning languages and am learning German at the moment!
In the last few years I have started rock climbing, and have learnt many rope and safety skills as well as technical climbing skills. From many years of being in the scouting association in the UK I have very basic first aid skills, as well as being a confident navigator and hiker in general.
I enjoy driving, cooking and I cut my own hair (though of those 3 I’m best at driving!). Perhaps more importantly than all of the above, I’m a fast learner and I really enjoy learning new skills and ways of doing things!

To share a little of my travel experiences…
One of my more recent and formative trips was to Morocco with two close friends in July of 2023. We spent two weeks between Marrakech and Essaouira, with a guided desert tour in between: a little different from our usual backpacking style trips but very well worth it. It was a trip of many firsts for all 3 of us and very different from previous trips we had been on in Europe. I learned a lot about adapting/not adapting to a new vastly different culture
I also spent a few weeks travelling on my own during the summer of 2022, hopping between hostels and family friends, travelling through Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland. That was my first time solo travelling and it built a lot of confidence in making fast friends with new people. Since then I have better understood the importance of making an effort and forming good connections while travelling, and it has left me craving solo travelling since. It’s something I hope to feel again during my time Workawaying in New Zealand.
