    A LITTLE ABOUT US:
We are very happy people, and have a love of life and adventure and enjoy working with people and teams towards a common goal. We love to laugh and play. We love nature and the outdoors. We enjoy living a minimalist life that our travels have afforded us. There are many more places that we want to visit, not as tourists but actually living in communities and helping communities.

Whilst we are full of fun, we are a quiet and contented couple who are at peace with each other and the world. We enjoy lots of things together whilst also pursuing our own hobbies and interests. Separately, we have raised children, had careers, owned, built and renovated houses in many parts of the world but now we able to be excited about life together and pour ourselves into new challenges and opportunities to be useful!

We finished The Camino to Santiago de Compostela on 16th October this year (2025). The journey was 800 kilometers in 5 weeks across stunning landscapes that delighted the eyes and nourished our soul. We enjoyed the physical challenge but enjoyed the opportunity for contemplation and reflection. We love stillness and quietness, wherever it may be found ... usually in the natural world, which is where we feel most at home. We are compatible because we both enjoy most the simple pleasures of healthy food, a beautiful environment and sincere, gentle friends and the company of animals.

    A LITTLE ABOUT LAURENCE:
In finding Workaway, I am excited about the potential to realize a long time dream to work on community projects in rural areas of the world. A dream that started when I was tasked, in my first Engineering job, to design a handpump for rural communities in Africa. I was so exhilarated when I went to southern Morocco to supervise the installation of the handpumps in villages on the edge of the Sahara desert and met with the villagers that would benefit from the water pumps.

I do multiple wilderness canoeing and kayaking trips each year and have done three white water canoe trips in the vast areas of northern Canada, where I and my travelling companions would be dropped off by float plan on a wild river and we would be completely alone as we canoe down river for two weeks.

During my life’s journey I have accumulated a wide range of skills that would contribute to many Workaway host opportunities. I enjoy doing all sorts of landscape and building projects (building retaining walls, patios, pathways, sheds, decks; planting, pruning, etc.). I am very proficient in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work and using all types of power tools (drills, skill saws, tablesaws, chainsaws, trimmers, etc.) as well as a plain old shovel and wheelbarrow.

    A LITTLE ABOUT PEPPER:
My name is Cheryl but my friends call me 'Pepper.'I love sport and outdoor activities and I am strong, fit and healthy, with lots of energy and enthusiasm for life. I am artistic and enjoy being creative - this passion takes many forms: in paint, collage, making my own clothes and creative writing but also designing houses, interior design and creating Zen gardens outside. I have worked as a teacher teaching in the UK and Spain but now I share my creative skills and passion as a volunteer, organising art and craft workshops for small groups of adults in the community or in retreat centres. I have shared mindfulness, meditation and contemplation with groups and led Women’s Circles and writing workshops in my own home.

I have looked after people’s homes, pets, small farms and farm animals as a house sitter and Workaway volunteer. Volunteering in these roles has taken me to Mexico, India, Spain, Sri Lanka and Alaska. I have looked after or lived in every type of accommodation - large houses with swimming pools to the most basic of homes shared with local families in India and Sri Lanka. I have volunteered in some very remote rural areas with only basic facilities or amenities. I have found that being adaptable, having a sense of humour and ‘rolling’ with what is, makes volunteering fun and rewarding.

I have a background in tourism. I worked with a partner as a tour operator in the 3 Valleys in France for 8 years. For the last 3 years have been organising and leading pilgrimage walking holidays in the UK. I am experienced at designing brochures and promotional literature, recruiting and managing staff, running holiday accommodation and the transportation of guests. I can manage budgets and the training of staff.

I like responsibility, using my initiative and problem solving, which is why I found working as a police officer so satisfying. I am very practical and ‘can-do,’ I enjoy hard work and a doing a job well but love the satisfaction of working together with others to realise a goal. The joy of being in community is wonderful and is what I seek. As for other skills ... well, I feel that I have developed the most important skill: that for realising a peaceful, joyful, happy life and the way of connecting with others who have discovered this too ;-)
