July 2023 update: I spent a lovely winter at a workaway on a remote beach in Mexico and I am finally making my way back to my favorite place in the world - Greece! I'll be flying into Athens on July 11th and will be in Greece for two months. Other than to meet with some friends, I don't have a set plan and am looking to spend some of my time in Greece doing a workaway as I've had my best travel experiences connecting with people and projects through workaway. November 2022 update: Hello! After traveling Greece, Bulgaria, Thailand, and Indonesia 2019-2020, I returned to Atlanta Georgia to study Linguistics in a Master's program. I am now done with classes and am planning Tommy next adventure abroad! I will be in Mexico beginning in December of 2022 and in addition to the experience listed previously, I have added teaching ESL/EFL to my skill set through my Master's program. As I apply for my Ph. D. and a Fulbright, I will still be working remotely in a flexible part time job. I am looking to for workaway situations that will give me a lot of time in the nature and I do not mind roughing it. I've done stays camping, without electricity, and lacking other modern luxuries which I find to be as rewarding as it is challenging.

August 2019: Hello! I am a recent nursing school drop out trying to find her place in the world. I'm coming back to Greece to focus on writing after having lived for a year in Athens during college. I am an Art Historian and a Classicist by education. I have a part time job that pays the bills as long as I live frugally and I would like to be in a work-stay situation where I get my hands dirty and am physically active. While I dropped out of nursing school to pursue my dreams, I am medically minded and have experience working as a caregiver from new born babies to the last stages of life. I am also a community organizer and have been involved in various social justice campaigns throughout my life. My beliefs are important to me, as is doing my part to create a more just world. I am a spiritual person, I pray/meditate daily and my practice is more eclectic than the Catholicism I was raised in.

Ideally, i see myself working with animals and in a garden or farm. I've left my cat, Tay, with my mother during my travels, so I am going to need some animal love to comfort me! (Don't worry, we get to skype.) I am a bubbly and easy going kind of person with a mellow temper. You won't find me getting angry about things and when I have a problem, I address the issue. I focus on what I am working on and tend to work hard. I am sociable and love to meet new people and get new perspectives on life and I am the life of the party. I also value my down time and enjoy some solitude to write.

I have experience as a professional caregiver. I started nannying in college and worked with children over the next five years. I then worked as a barista for three years, before working on my CNA license and beginning work as a caregiver for the elderly and disabled. I am a hard worker and dedicate myself to whatever I am working on.

I studied ancient Greek Art and Language in college and am getting involved in leading tours .

I loved taking care of sweet Leelou and seeing the trash and plastic that arrives each day on the shoreline was very sad but gratifying to take part in cleaning up the beach and organizing the trash into recycling. I was very lucky to be invited to join Luciana, a professional master diver and tour guide, in the water - she gave me personal tours and lessons in free diving and snorkeling so we could explore the amazing reef just in front of the home. With her busy schedule she may not be able to take everyone out in this way, but if she invites you and you are a strong swimmer I highly recommend that you join her. I learned so much from her and it is really beautiful and inspiring to witness her passion for the reef, which i too fell in love with.
It is a really unique experience and it is important to know what you are getting into here. I will say, it is not for everyone. The word adventure best describes the experience where you will be pulling water from a well to clean, bathe, and flush the outhouse toilet. While there is a very nice cabin with a queen bed, it is more similar to camping in some ways. The property is in the jungle and you will have to contend with the natural environment and coexist with all the creatures that call it home. The ants are absolutely amazing but you have to be careful of them. They will descend on certain areas and you just have to keep away until they pass. Once they were covering the entire kitchen building (which has a small gas stove but does not have a fridge) and I had to wait a few hours until they passed. This also happened one day with my cabin, where I wasn't able to enter until they had moved on. But these sorts of things are just a minor inconvenience - the only thing that was truly difficult to contend with was the mosquitoes! They are very persistent and it is important to bring bug spray and burning coils and also to ask Luciana for advice on how to deal with them and follow her instructions. Start eating garlic the week before you come because that really helps. Hydrocortisone is also very helpful because whatever you do to prepare you will still get bites.
It is also important to remember that you will be 8km (30 minutes by bike) from the town and there are no closer food stores.
The property is absolutely gorgeous. You can eat as many coconuts as you can open (careful with the machete!), take out a kayak, go swimming in the reef, and explore the mangroves and jungle all around you. I stayed for three weeks which was very nice for me but I would not recommend too much longer of a stay unless you are used to not having air conditioning, running water, or how to survive in a jungle. You will also have a good deal of time on your own so it is perfect for someone who is looking to disconnect from city life and take some time with themselves, though the wifi and electricity work perfectly and it's close enough to the town that you won't feel stranded.

Was a pleasure to have Cai looking after Leelou and the property. She was attaked by mosquitoes but that was just a challenge for her not meke her quit!!!!
Her knowledge about recycling plastic was very important and clened up the plastic mess at the beach.
