  • Description

Update: Dorka had to go back to Hungary, because her contract starts in her hospital placement from February, so it is just me, Blanka travelling solo at the moment.

    Hello!
This is Blanka (medical student) and Dorottya whose nickname is Dorka (newly graduated doctor), who decided to take a gap year together. We started our journey in Vietnam, then Indonesia and are travelling to Australia next, in November.
Last year we both came to the conclusion that we would like to take a slightly alternative path in medicine compared to the tradititional one. The goal of this journey is to take a step back and find inspiration for the small alterations we would need to make, to feel medicine our calling again. We hope that time and a change of scenery will help us get closer to our 'ikigai'.
We believe that our inner drive to meet new cultures, places and people will help us on the way. We consider ourselves curious and extroverted so travelling has always been one of our favourite things to do. Australia has been on our bucket list for quite a while now for its easy-going people and laid-back lifestyle.
We would like to immerse ourselves in Australia's natural beauty, from beaches to mountains, since we are both outdoorsy and adventurous. We both like hiking and cycling, however while Dorka rather stays on the ground and spends her time running, Blanka prefers going for a swim or doing some snorkeling. Still we both have a creative side and enjoy capturing special moments on our cameras or on the pages of a sketchbook. We like being creative in our every day lives and enjoy thinking outside of the box. Challenging tasks never scare us and we are always open to complex and meaningful conversations as well.
We wish to experience as much of your culture as we can and in exchange we would be most happy to tell you about our small country, unique language and cuisine (we can cook you stuffed cabbage for Christmas:) )

We would be happy to share our unique language, if you are interested in Hungarian. We strongly believe that one of the best way to understand cultural differences is through familiarising ourselves with different languages. Besides English Blanka learnt German and Dorka speaks Italian and remembers some of the French she learnt in school. Both of us would be grateful to get better in these languages as well as help kids learn some of the basics of them. Since Blanka took part in a beginner Spanish course in uni, she has been longing to continue and learn more.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

    Childcare:
We met through an NGO called Amigos For Children, which offers volunteering opportunities for university students to teach hospitalised kids languages in a playful manner. This gave us plenty of experience in terms of entertaining and dealing with kids, even with special needs. Moreover, besides her work in Amigos, Blanka has been involved in organising interactive events in kindergartens, educating kids about the human body (called Teddy Bear Hospital programs) for three years now. This gave her plenty of pratical knowledge in both teaching and coordinating. She is the eldest sibling in her family, so taking care of younger children has always been part of her life. As for Dorka, she worked previously as an au pair in Italy and has a niece, who she visits often. During the five years she spent volunteering for Amigos, she was the coordinator for several admission processes and created interactive booklets and online programs for kids. During the Covid pandemic, they both helped high schoolers prepare for their final English exams.

    DIY, creative tasks:
Painting walls, fabricating and renovating furnitures, building a garden shed are both things we have done before. Blanka's mom does interior design as a part time job thus she was involved in several occasions in both the planning and the implementing process.

    Gardening and animal care:
We were both raised in family houses with a big garden, so gardening is something that we were involved in from a very early age. Our climate is quite suitable for growing veggies and fruits, so besides landscaping tasks, we have experience in looking after our vegetable patches as well. Furthermore, we also enjoy spending time with animals. We both have dogs, cats and rabbits at home but we are happy to be involved in taking care of farm animals too, although we don't have that much experience on them.

  • Autres infos...

I am someone with a lot of energy who likes making the most out of her days. My morning always starts with a big cup of coffee and my day cannot pass by without getting physically active. I have always had some special connection with water, especially the sea, so I am most happy when I can spend some time in the beach. I did competitive swimming in my teenage years, but nowadays I definitely prefer nature over pool. I love a good hike or cycling tour outside, but I also enjoy getting creative. Painting and doing pottery are some things that always help me unwind.
Back in Europe, we used to chose a new capital to discover with my friends at the end of every semester. Getting an insight into different cultures made my exsisting love for photography grow even stronger. It brings me joy to capture the every day life and traditions of local people, thus street photography is what i enjoy the most. I really wish I could have taken my camera with me now, but it just would not fit in with its bag:( so right now I am learning to use my phone instead, which is always a good practice for finding the right composition.
Environmental protection and sustainability are causes that are most important for me. My dream is to find a way in the medical field where these principles and healing exsist together. I agree with the ancient quote 'Health starts within the gut', so in the past years I started paying more and more attention to cooking accoring to and keeping a healthy diet. I enjoy experimenting with food and proving the point that a healthy dish can be just as delicious indeed.
    /Blanka/

Once as a joke someone asked me 'if you would be an object, what would you be?'. I said a Swiss knife, because I am good at many things, not a master of all, but I have a solid practical knowledge in several fields. I think it is because I have always been genuinely curious about how the word works and I am grateful for all the time and possibility I have to learn about nature, psychology, science, cuisine and culture. I was contemplating a lot when choosing university, whether I should become a teacher or not, because I find it so exciting to explain different topics on different levels. Lately I am trying to come up with a way to implement teaching into my life and in the future as a pediatrician.
My hobbies are quite colorful: running, horse riding and drawing were my first ones growing up and I still enjoy these activities. In high school I was crazy about anything related to Italy, thus I decided to learn Italian on my own and work there during the summer. This was the time when I first participated in a dance class and decided to start ballet at the age of 16. Later on, during university I started doing crossfit and changed ballet to salsa and bachata classes. Nowadays, I also like experimenting with food and creating unique recipes. Personality-wise I feel like I am shifting from being hectic and mostly extroverted to someone who also finds it refreshing to slow down a bit and spend some time alone, unbothered while drawing, listening to music or taking a walk in nature.
Many of my precious memories are related to sports, especially to those events where I participated in a group with friends or family, for example cycling together in the summer, running around Lake Balaton, kayaking on River Tisza for days or when I went to martial art competitions with my team.
