I’m motivated by genuine connection and the idea of being more than just a tourist. I love immersing myself in different social and cultural experiences, learning from people, and sharing stories and laughter along the way.

What makes me happiest is feeling useful — helping out, contributing to something meaningful, and creating little moments of human connection. I’m fluent in English — I’ve been working and communicating in English for around 15 years. My mother tongue is Romanian, and I’m currently enrolled in Spanish classes at about a B2 level on the European scale. I really enjoy language exchange and believe it’s one of the best ways to connect with people and understand a culture more deeply.

I have quite a broad set of experiences and I enjoy learning new things quickly. I speak English at a very good level and feel comfortable communicating with people from different backgrounds.

My skills include working with animals and helping on farms, assisting with education or community activities, organizing social or cultural events, and general household tasks like cleaning or cooking.

I also have some experience with health awareness projects and I’m not afraid of physical work — whether it’s construction, gardening, or any hands-on help that’s needed.

I’m flexible, reliable, and happy to contribute wherever I can be useful.

I love animals and feel happiest when I can be around them or help care for them. I also have a cat named Barranco del Sol, who brings me a lot of joy and reminds me to slow down and enjoy the little things.

I really enjoy being close to the water — swimming, snorkeling, or simply spending time by the sea always makes me feel peaceful and recharged.

I’m open-minded, curious about local life, and always up for trying new activities or learning new skills.

A) Volunteering work at school:

I had a good experience volunteering at the local schools in Lombok. There are two schools to choose from: a primary school where Ari's father teaches (which is closer to Ari's house), or a high school where Ari teaches (which is further away). I appreciated the flexibility to choose which school I wanted to… read more volunteer at. The students' level of English is relatively low, but they are very curious, open to communication, and eager to ask questions. They are also polite and kind, making it a pleasure to teach and interact with them.

The curriculum provides a general framework, but there is a lot of flexibility in the topics to be covered, allowing for creative and engaging lessons. I was impressed by the warm welcome from the other teachers at the schools, who were friendly and supportive throughout my stay. Transportation to and from the schools was convenient, with Ari's family providing transportation by car or scooter.

As a woman, you need to cover your head at school and wear decent cloths.

B) Living with Ari's family:

Living with Ari's family was a truly immersive and enriching experience. As a volunteer, I stayed in a separate room in their home, which was modest but comfortable. Ari's mother is an excellent cook, and I enjoyed the delicious meals she prepared 3x /day. The traditional Lombok coffee was a particular highlight for me! The family's home is located in a quiet, traditional area, where women are advised to dress modestly and cover their bodies.

While there may not be many attractions in the immediate village, Ari was always happy to help arrange transportation to nearby market, bank, or other destinations. I appreciated the evening conversations with the family, which provided a unique opportunity to learn about Muslim culture and traditions. Ari's father, in particular, was a kind and wise man who shared so many interesting insights and stories!

I was grateful for Ari's help in picking me up from Lombok airport and dropping me off at the end of my stay (in exchange of a reasonable fee) , as well as the various trips he arranged, including a camping trip to Gili Bidera where I did amazing snorkeling(!) , visits to rice fields, waterfalls, and Senggigi beach. Overall, I felt loved and welcomed during my stay with Ari's family, and I highly recommend this experience to anyone looking to immerse themselves in Indonesian/Lombok culture and make a positive impact on the local community.
