Hi I am Michael
I'm a keen traveller having visited around 80 countries to date. Sailed across the Atlantic, and the Pacific oceans, and through the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.
Sociable and relaxed, I enjoy the outdoors, adventure, and meeting new people.
I like most sports, cooking, building things, and getting into the garden.
Doing another season in the French Alps this winter, and currently learning French. Qualified SCUBA Dive Instructor. Competent builder albeit not professional. Love to play chess and backgammon, swap stories, a little yoga, all water sports. I've done some great work away. Having met the Queen of Denmark on one. I'm very social, respectful of ones space, well mannered, and generally positive. I love meeting people.

Where to start?

Albeit my experience was short, the time went so slowly, in a lovely way, because i experienced so much.

Ellen and Kurt are fantastic. Ellen has the charm and grace of a movie actress and the spirit of a naturist, extremely understanding, fair, and a beautiful calm nature. She was clear when discussing tasks, yet gave me the… read more freedom to do them as i saw fit.... once the trust in my ability and work ethic was established. From the first day she was kind enough to show me some local attractions, and i further explored the property.... in particular the fence line (which is extensive) as trimming that was to become one of my tasks.

Kurt is funny and intriguing, once you break through, which didn't take long, and he cooks a mean BBQ.... which is saying something as I am Australian. I loved our chats about all things manly - from the tool shed, to motorbikes and travels.

The property is extensive, has a lovely backstory which you feel from just walking around, intrigued by the odd structures that can be found hidden in woodland..... its diverse in habitat, from moss parkland, to pine forest to open fields.....each as beautiful as the next. The horses are just gorgeous.... and so placid....a result of the calming environment no doubt. And bean, the german terrier is a delightful companion on your walks and work.... you'll be paired from the start, and one couldnt ask for a more charismatic sidekick.

I must say having only been there a week i was lucky enough to work both at the property in Herning and also in Fjellerup, where i met Ellens daughter and her parents, which was very special for me. The properties are gorgeous, adorned with fruit tress and berries and a short stroll from the beach. I talked for hours with Ellens parents, who treated me like a relative who was returning home, cooking some truly amazing food, real Danish delicacies, which im very thankful for.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Kurts son and his friends.... really great blokes all of them.

I think this is one of those work away experiences where hard work and gratitude are rewarded....... Ellen and Kurt have an extensive property which requires much work just to maintain, and i found the work most enjoyable. Being in nature, really making the most of the surrounds. In return they were very fair (actually more than fair, extremely generous) .... allowing me to use the bicycles at will, providing me with my own area of the house (lounge, bathroom, bedroom), were very flexible, fed me extremely well, encouraged and facilitated me seeing the areas around where i worked, and even loaned me the car so i could take a day and night off, so i went to Klitmoller (the Ice Hawaii) to check the surf.

I would certainly recommend this to, but not limited to, anyone who loves to be outdoors, has not experienced the Danish countryside, and who is sociable yet also independent, with a good work ethic.

Thank you Kurt and Ellen for the amazing experience, the great conversation, your very warm hospitality, and the personal/life lessons i obtained through meeting you and sharing your time.

salut michael, et merci beaucoup pour ton aide, les portes ne te remerciront jamais assez, malgrés nos difficultés de communication nous avons réussis à nous entendre, j'espère que ton francais aujourd'hui te sert, tu ne t'ai jamais arreté de bricoler et donc permis de bien avancer mon projet, si tu veux revenir se sera vraiment avec plaisir
