Description
My name is Becki, I am 32 year old Primary School teacher originally from Northern England (Yorkshire). I now live and work in London teaching ages 7-8. It's a challenging job in a big bustling city, but I love it! I have amble experience and get a lot from working with children.

At heart, I am an adventurous soul and spent my late 20s travelling to Canada, Hawaii and LA staying with host families on a range of horse farms organised through WWOOF and workaway. After coming back from my adventures I moved to Japan for a year from 2016-2017 where I taught English to children and adults.

I grew up on a family farm in the countryside so my love of nature including long summer nights and early winter mornings feeding animals has never left me. This summer will be my first long school holidays (i'm a brand new teacher!) , so i'm looking to make the most of it by spending time in my favourite place: nature.

I have ample experience working and living on farms, spent a year as a professional groom in Surrey, England working with and exercising amazing eventing horses and working with many other four legged friends. I used to ride for fun (no competitions etc) but have been out of the saddle for many years. I will take riding lessons ahead of my trip.

I am a friendly face and a hard worker. I look forward to connecting with others, animals and nature once again and hope you'll consider me for your place.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I grew up on a family farm and have worked on several farms around the globe. My skills include animal care for a variety of four legged friends, mucking out, feeding, tacking up, washing tack, riding (though it's been a few years!). I'm not afraid of heavy lifting, odd jobs around the farm. I enjoy cooking. I have a drivers licence.

I am also a teacher with a TESOL qualification to teach English to both adults and children and a primary school teacher with ample experience working with children. Whilst i'd like to take a break from 'formal' teaching on my travels I would love to help with children as I enjoy working with and hanging out with them. As well as exchanging languages i'm great at keeping them entertained and curious!

Before qualifying to teach I worked in marketing, writing marketing content for a range of clients (should you need help with your website etc).

I love to keep busy, I enjoy reading, writing, watching films, attending yoga class, hiking, playing cards or board games (bananagrams!). I spend as much time in the garden as possible during the spring and summer months. This year I want to take ceramics classes and get back into horse riding (luckily they have riding schools in London!)

I knew my time with Maria and Nuno was going to be special from the moment Maria stopped the car on the ride to the farm to help an elderly lady get her shopping up the hill…! In just two short weeks this August, I made so many memories and had an amazing time in rural Portugal. Maria and Nuno are very generous, kind and open-minded people who… read more welcomed me and a different Workaway Raluca onto their farm and into their family (shout out to their young daughters Mafalda and Malu).

I think this Workaway is perfect if, like me, you enjoy staying busy, working hard, (riding horses!), being in nature, learning and talking with others 💕 . As the reviews say, you work with the horses everyday. From mucking out, to grooming the horses and preparing them for lessons: the work is very typical of any riding barn and many other horse-related Workaways I’ve done. The physical jobs are hard for the first few days but it becomes easier very quickly (if you have an open mind). If you’ve never worked on a farm before, be prepared to get hay in your hair and dirt under your nails because… well that’s farm life! The best news is, after 2 weeks here, I left stronger and fitter (& slimmer) than I have been in many years 💪.

The 14 horses are really well cared for a well-mannered so it’s a pleasure to help take care of them everyday. I have a good amount experience with horses which definitely made my stay even better because I was confident from day one. The quicker you learn the more help you’ll be, so don’t be afraid to ask questions - no question will be a stupid question! Whether you have experience or not, you’ll learn a lot from Maria and Nuno. They are extremely patient and have very good hearts (and a good sense of humour!) which is needed when you have workaways finding their feet. I was lucky to have a brilliant Workaway partner in Raluca too, which made the stay even better because we worked extremely well as a team (and laughed a lot along the way). If you’re a team player and have each other’s back, the days will be fun and rewarding. Too hot to push the wheelbarrow up the hill? Your partner will offer to do it! Looking tired and like you need a snack? Your partner will bring you an apple! One last stable to clean? You and your partner will fight to do it so the other doesn’t have to!

I am really thankful for the riding lessons I received during my stay - it’s rare to find a Workaway where you get a lesson each day. Maria is an excellent teacher and I progressed massively during my short stay. It was also a pleasure to help Maria with the therapy lessons, and as a primary school teacher. I took a lot from the sessions with children.

On the farm you have everything you need, and good food provided each day by the house keeper lovely Rosa. I am pescatarian and there was always something to eat. It was so nice to have meals together with the family and Nuno always stayed for a chat (& Portuguese lesson) in the evenings. There is no wifi so prepare to unplug a bit (or buy extra data). You get two days off a week and Maria and Nuno are so kind to invite you along on family days on Sundays. We had some amazing times on boat trips, at the local fair, even at the discotheque!! It’s remote, but if you need a lift anywhere Mara and Nuno are happy to help! To get there I flew from London to Porto and it was easy to get public transport to the nearby town where Maria picked me up.

Finally, I could say so so so much more about this experience, because it was super special to me and something I’ll cherish forever (though of course I’ll be back!). I think you really get out of it what you put into any Workaway experience so don’t be shy to bring an open mind and a friendly smile (& a good work ethic!). Miss you all already x
