Hi ! We are travelling lover :)
We work online during the whole year (Arthur creates websites & Enora is doing consulting for real estate), so we enjoy traveling and discovering other countries. Share moments, learn about local people, culture, food and taste the life style of local people is very important for us.
For this reason our purpose is to split our time to our job and give help/spend time with you :)

First of all, a big thank you to Prakash and Srijana for welcoming us so warmly into their little paradise. From the moment we arrived, we felt like part of the family, at home :)
The site is exceptionally rich in fruit, edible plants, and medicinal plants, and the best part is that Prakash knows everything there is to know about all these plants… read more and is happy to share his knowledge with you! Prakash is an excellent storyteller and traveler, and he always has an anecdote to share ;)
Prakash is what you would call a "bon vivant" (someone who enjoys the good life). He loves to laugh, nature, healthy things, and good food! We cooked together, and Prakash is very imaginative when it comes to cooking, he will probablu learn to you many things. Since I cooked with him, I personally changed my way to cooking, and now it's taster! (my opinion)
Every day we had complete, healthy, varied, and above all, yummy meals! We will definitely miss Srijana's banana bread, not to mention Prakash's fresh homemade bread (sometimes made with buckwheat from his own field!). I hope you will have the chance to taste the famous homemade “chang” (fermented rice), and maybe you will be better than us at taking on the challenge of eating extra-hot chili peppers once a day to become a true Nepalese (according to Prakash). Most of the produce comes from the garden and local producers (from ginger to garlic to chayotes).

We contributed in various ways, painting, gardening, helping in the kitchen, and welcoming guests. Don't expect to be bossed around. Prakash is very easygoing. The most important thing for him is that you do what you love to do and do it with love. He's not the type to stand over you and tell you what to do and how to do it.
Prakash took us to the sunrise viewpoint in Tansen. We walked there from the farm early in the morning, and the view was magical! We went back a second time with Srijana, Leo, and Coco. It was a pleasant moment, sipping good tea with a view of the Himalayas in the early morning. Their two golden retrievers, Leo and Coco, accompanied us. You'll quickly grow attached to them ;)

Prakash and Srijana are very kind and caring people. They always made sure we had everything we needed and were as comfortable as possible.
We became very attached to them, and now that we know the address, there's a good chance we'll be back! :)

Rukshan and his parents kindly picked us up at the bus station. They warmly welcomed us into their home for five days :)

The house is very large and surrounded by a beautiful garden with three adorable dogs. The room is quite comfortable with a single bed and an extra mattress. Expect to hear some outside noise (Buddhist chants outside at 5:30… read more every morning, dogs that may bark since the window overlooks the part of the house where they are kept).

We weren't asked to do any heavy work. We worked for a couple of hours watering the garden and digging a small ditch to drain rainwater from the garden. Nisha looked after us, offering us food and drink approximately every 15 minutes. We spent most of our time with Nisha, who made sure we were well fed (even a little insistently), took us to visit the beautiful tea fields in the surrounding area (during a walk with her husband and their two dogs), and introduced us to a Buddhist monk who lives in the temple a few steps from the house. We even got to join the family on their weekend outing to the Bandarawela shopping center.
Note that the family recently moved to the village and does not seem to have much interaction with the neighborhood.

All meals were provided for us. In the morning, Hemanta (the father) prepared delicious local dishes (lunumiris with rice, pol roti, fish curry, rice curry) for us, thanks to which we were able to learn both the names of the foods in Sinhala and how they were cooked. Hemanta is less comfortable with English, but he makes up for it with his calmness and deep kindness. He is very pleasant to be around :)
Rukshan (the son) is a discreet person (like his father) who is a fountain of knowledge. As you get to know him, you realize that his wealth of knowledge comes from his endless curiosity. It's a real pleasure to talk to him :)

Nisha is a dynamic person who has a lot of knowledge and needs to share it. She is therefore very talkative (in excellent English).
Her way of communicating can be quite controlling (sit down, eat, come, drink, finish that), which sometimes made us feel a little instrumentalized.
Despite this, Nisha is a kind and caring person who always made sure we had everything we needed.

All in all, we had a great time with every member of the family, and it was interesting to live with a local family.

If you're looking for a Workaway where you don't want to sweat too much, but rather talk, eat, visit a Sri Lankan village, and pet cute dogs, this is for you! :)

Arthur and Wendi are very nice and cheerful people. They helped us in the garden and with cooking, and they were also very friendly with our pets. They are responsible, kind, and easy to be around. We had a really great time with them and can definitely recommend them to future hosts

Mon séjour de 2 semaines chez Joann a été très enrichissant ! :)
J'étais accompagné de mon camarade Malik (arrivé en même temps que moi chez Joann). Chacun d'entre nous avait sa propre chambre et j'avais même un bureau dans la mienne pour pouvoir travailler sur mon ordinateur :)
La maison de Joann est très spacieuse et surtout très agréable à… read more vivre avec beaucoup de lumière naturelle qui rentre, des œuvres d'art disposés un peu partout dans la maison, des matériaux naturels, bref, c'est vivant :)

J'ai appris sur la coupe et l'entretien d'arbre fruitier, j'ai amélioré mes compétences en manœuvre avec une remorque, en taillage et nettoyage de haies, en montage de clôture, et maintenant, je ramasse les feuilles mortes plus rapidement qu'un souffleur de 800 Watts ! :)
Dans l'idée d'organiser des événements ponctuels, Joann nous a aussi fait participer au nettoyage de son cabanon (et a la réflexion sur comment l'isoler/l'aménager) et du container à l'entrée de la propriété qui auront pour but de devenir un bar à cidre et une boutique d'art respectivement. Nous avons aussi fait du ménage et du design d'intérieur pour aménager une pièce qui servira de salon, également dans le cadre d'événement ponctuels.
J'ai aussi appris à utiliser de nouveaux aliments sauvages dans ma cuisine, puisque Joann est très intéressée par l'alimentation, en général : régime sans gluten, repas végétarien, utilisation de produits sauvage, cuisine du monde. Et c'est une bonne cuisinière ! :)
Elle a d'ailleurs pris le temps de connaître notre régime alimentaire et d'effectuer les achats en conséquence. Nos cultures et goûts respectifs nous ont permis de manger très variés et de régaler nos papilles :)

J'ai pris plaisir à faire chacune de ces choses car Joann ne met aucune pression, elle vous laisse tout l'espace et le temps dont vous avez besoin et surtout, elle laisse venir et s'épanouir chaque jour comme il vient :)
Ne vous attendez pas à avoir un programme hebdomadaire détaillé, car chaque jour sera différent et imprévisible ;)

Malik et moi avons également partagé de joyeux repas (devrais-je dire festin ?) avec la fille de Joann et son mari, forts sympathiques, vivant dans la maison voisine.

Mon séjour m'a rappelé comme il était bon de vivre proche de la nature. Vous pourrez aller vous balader dans les forêts voisines ou randonner au Mont Saint Hilaire, puis ensuite déguster une tarte aux pommes de Petit & Fils qui sont les voisins de Joann. Accompagnez-la d'une bouteille de cidre ou d'un jus de pomme préparés dans l'atelier de Joann. Ses boissons sont délicieuses, vous allez redécouvrir le vrai goût de la pomme :)

Merci à toi Joann pour avoir partagé ton monde rempli de couleur avec nous :) C'était fort enrichissant, très agréable, et ça m'a rappelé des choses essentielles de la vie :)
