My first Workaway experience was at Virginia and Christian’s place, and it was truly memorable! I was impressed by Virginia's commitment to minimizing food waste and her efforts to recycle and upcycle in all areas of her life. Even though my stay was brief, thanks to Virginia, I now try to reduce waste in my own life as much as possible

Additionally, I must say that both Virginia and Christian are genuinely kind people with beautiful souls. I also miss the garden work there (it was a great, free workout, as I mentioned 😉) and I hope to go back again one day.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Yiyao came for just over a week to help us and meanwhile having a time out and we are happy to say, it worked so well she continued staying for 2 more days until she definetly had to go back to normal life :-)
She is a cheerful, alert and very kind person. Living and working alongside worked very well although her life, culture and experiences

The work she did was new for her but she was very open, interested and ready to do it! I loved her saying the garden work was a great workout, better than at the gym! :-)
We had a good mix of spending free time together and by our own but a highlight was at the weekend when we had dinner together and Yiyao showed us some asian food culture. Once she cooked a classic chinese surprise meal for us and once we made sushi alltogether.
We totally recommend Yiyao for future workaways and wish her all the best.

Although my stay with Virginia was short it was a memorable one! Communication was quick and we were able to plan my trip to stay with her spontaneously and easily! Virginia always made sure I was comfortable and we had many funny and interesting conversations. :-) She is a very attentive and caring person and all jobs I was given were clearly instructed and highly doable. We enjoyed a lovely meal with her family in the garden outside as well as playing a board game on our last evening together which was my favourite memory there!
I would recommend any workawayer looking for a quiet retreat and time spent with a wonderful family. ( Mädchen the lovely kitty.) :-)

Reuben introduced himself as a fit person ready to help out wherever needed in a time when Virginia was handicapped and Christian wasn't home much, so he could only win ;D

Meeting Reuben is an adventure :)
He and his girlfriend stayed with us for about six weeks. They were game to help and open for exchanges and activities.
Reubens free-spirited ideas, simple lifestyle and his rejoice in discussing topics of life leaded to many interesting conversations. We had serious and funny moments, we worked, sang and gamed together, showed us our culture and saw family members. It was a pleasure to meet you, Reuben, and we are curious about your future happenings :-)

It started as a spontaneous last-minute-adventure for a one-month-time-slot (“the flat downstairs will be empty for some weeks so shall we do a workaway experience?”) and it ended in a friendship we wouldn’t ever have expected.
Helena joyned us together with her boyfriend. The couple came to work in Germany and chose our place as the first stop
… read more for their start in this country.
As both grew up in different countries (even continents) where we have never been to and it also was their first trip to Europe we had a big range of topics to discuss and we all were interested to get to know the different cultures, areas and minds so we had a great and interesting exchange which was agreeably open, straightforward and evolved into deep private conversations.
Usually both worked each 4 hours a day and one of them spent the last hour by cooking a meal for us which we all took together. As Helena loves to cook it was mostly her who did it. We really appreciated the way we found of providing the main grotheries and then let them choose the menue to prepare. So we had a great mix of simple and sophisticate dishes, classic german and brasil style, in penchant by turn.
Though we had a pool of jobs to be done they could chose from, both were so kindful to ask which ones had the biggest need and how they could help us the most (as they knew we had to stop hosting after their leaving for a longer time). They were always open for any job and didn’t mind to get dirty or to do the things the way we prefer. We are very gladful we had the chance to join their help.
Helena is an open-hearted, pleasant-natured, in-depth, thoughtful, positive character who behaves every individual including our compost worms with respect and appreciation. She deeply moved our souls by her nature and we are very happy we had the chance to meet and get to know each other. Hopefully we’ll stay in contact so we can amplify the friendship we set <3
We'd love to meet you guys again, somewhere in the world!

This was my first workaway experience, and the only thing I can say is: it couldn't have been better! Virginia and Chris are two beautiful souls who shared with us not only their knowledge, but their lives and our relationship was far beyond "host & guest", I feel proud and honoured to have them as friends now. With them, we learned a lot about
… read more how an eco and environment friendly life style can be very possible and even easier than we imagine it to be; the food sharing network was an amazing concept we got to know, as well as other daily tips to be more gentile with the planet, saving resources and money as well.
Virginia and Chris live in a quiet and nice place in Wedau, Duisburg, at a lovely house with a beautiful garden. Most of the work was done at the garden (removing weeds, managing the compost, renovating the paths with new tiles, cleaning the soil, etc.), but we also did some work inside, as renovating a wooden floor & cleaning the windowns.
Virginia was mostly in charge to guide our activities and she showed us with loths of patience and empathy what nedeed to be done. Cooking one meal a day was also part of the work, and we usually had it all together, sharing a good moment of connection and fun.
The accomodation is a lovely appartment with everything you need. The place is comfortable and went beyond our expectations. There are many beautiful places to visit around, lakes and forests where contact with nature is very precious.
During our stay, Virginia and Chris were exceptional hosts and included us in many cultural activities, like a football game at the stadium (Go Duisburg!!!), a street festival, an amazing sunset viewing at The Turtle & The Tiger, and a night of fun with a delicious dinner and some music and candles. I felt very connected to them, as they are the kind of people that are open to new ideas and experiences, always keen to know more about you and your background, with lots of respect and appreciation. We were also very welcomed by them to learn German words and expressions, and they taugh us and encouraged our language practice.
Virgina taugh me so many things and made my stay so meaninful and fun! She taugh me how a compost works, how to wash my clothes using ivy leaves, and how to spot the "Little Bear" constelation in the sky. I will be forever grateful for her friendship and for our meaningful conversations, that really enriched my soul.
Thanks to Virginia and Chris (but also Mädchen and Edel), Duisburg will be forever in my heart, and this experience will always be a highlight in my memories! ♥️Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Stefanie & André were our first workawayer and as we had felt a little uncertain on this way of connecting with people and helping each other we couldn’t have had a better start with them into it <3
They are a very friendly and easygoing couple, reticent, quite, helpful and thoughtful as well as open minded and obtained for convivial gatherings
… read more or a nice talk in between. Adorably they handled with our tools carefully without any need of explanation and consequently cleared it away after work as well as they tidied up their workspace every day which we greatly appreciated.
They did several different jobs from cooking to gardening to woodworking and laying pavings, whatever was in a need to do and they wanted to do. They worked properly, thoroughly and contentious. We let them act flexible and self-determined and it worked very well.
André really is a passionated cook so we made him cook the daily dinner for us and enjoyed being pampered with unfamiliar dishes. He did a great job as a cook using the food that had been provided to him and turning it into a delicious surprise meal 😋
Originally we planned their stay for two weeks but in the end they joined us for six weeks from spring to summer. As we were totally satisfied and they even made it to build a relationship to our very individual cat
we spontaneous decided to let them catsit and take care of the garden for two weeks during our absence. They seriously looked after our plants and lovingly took care of the cat including brushing and cuddling her every day 🥰🐈 They minded so well as no sitter had done before - We definitely need (want) Stefanie & André to come back and take care again! 😎

We stayed at Virginias and Christians place for six weeks this summer and fell in love with this mostly green part of Duisburg. If you're looking for a quiet place to calm down and want all the advantages of a bigger city - this is your place!
Virginia and Christian are an easygoing and funny couple which is always open for a nice chat.
They
… read more highly appreciate an eco-friendly lifestyle and told/taught us a lot about food sharing which was super interesting! As a result we also started to learn more about it and try to include this lifestyle (producing less waste, using plastic bags again, etc) into our lifes.
The work at their home was pretty easy and we could organize our working hours by ourselves. We did jobs like gardening work (weeding, watering, helping with planting the tomatoes etc. ) sanding furniture, repairing clothes with a sewing machine and did some cooking as well.
One of best things was our accommodation. We had our own flat in their basement and it had everything we needed! As the flat is mostly located underground it was still cool in the summer months in every room wich was amazing! We had our own entrance, own bathroom, a terrace, a kitchen, a living room with a TV in it and of course a bedroom. We really enjoyed our stay there!
There is a lot of things to explore in your free time in Duisburg as well. The Regatta Course (an artificial rowing/canoeing lake) is in walking distance and invites you to go for a walk, running or biking. There are several seas to explore in walking distance. If you want to go to the city there is a bus station close by that brings you to central station, where you have lots of stores to explore, in 20 min. Also, you can always ask Virginia and Christian for their advice, they now their city and surroundings really well!
Oh wait! We forgot "Mädchen" the cat. We catsitted her for two weeks and she is an adorable, beautiful and friendly cat :) We miss her still! Even if she ignored us after our catsitting duties :DVous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.
