    Description

Hello, my name is Nestor. I'm a lawyer and I've taught at UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), giving classes in Municipal and Electoral Law. For the past few years, I've dedicated my time to researching algorithmic trading models, but as everything that begins must end, the time has come to pursue a new life project: creating a self-sustaining space far from the city, in this case, in the jungle of Palenque, Chiapas, where my exceptional wife, Maria Esther, is from. She's a Chol Maya and speaks her native language fluently. Thanks to her, it's possible to dream of this new opportunity to build something exceptional and unique. We have two children, an 11-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy. They are our driving force, and our work will be their legacy in the future. We are aware of the needs of Indigenous communities, and that is why we are driving change, at least within the Adolfo López Mateos ejido, where we own a 1,200-square-meter plot of land and three ejido parcels totaling approximately four hectares, which we intend to dedicate to various productive projects. It should be noted that the 2.5-hectare plot, the land, and one of the other parcels are located a few meters from the Chacamax River, a very important river that flows all the way to the city of Palenque. We are also passionate about nature and its conservation, and we have already undertaken reforestation activities with timber and fruit trees, as well as coffee cultivation. We still have space available for many other projects. Currently, there is a cultural clash between the Chol Maya communities and modernity, ranging from changes in diet to the loss of some of their customs and traditions. Therefore, we have also considered the possibility of promoting the preservation of their cultural heritage through effective communication channels.

I believe one of the most important aspects of this project is cultural exchange, as we all have something to teach and much to learn, regardless of where we come from or what we do. This aligns with part of my thesis, which is about coexistence, teamwork, and building something lasting together. And to that end, I'd like to recall a Mexican saying: "Mi casa es tu casa" (My house is your house). Furthermore, we can research the region's medicinal plants together, hike the jungle trails, plant in the garden, and germinate seeds in the nursery. I should mention that the construction of a geodesic dome is still underway, so there will be opportunities to learn together, from the calculations to assembling the structure. My wife, María Esther, is Maya Chol, so you'll have a great opportunity to learn some of this ancestral language, which also sounds so beautiful. We can also share Spanish, and of course, we'd love to learn English or other languages with our visitors. We've even considered organizing small language workshops for the community members, so that the exchange benefits everyone. Personally, we're open to cultural exchange and continuous learning. We can also visit the Palenque archaeological site, hike through the jungle, explore nearby communities, browse the local market, or simply go for a swim in the Chacamax River. Ultimately, I believe cultural exchange doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes it's enough to share a meal, prepare a recipe, have a chat, or learn something someone else knows how to do. The important thing is that there's willingness and respect among everyone.

In the jungle, you can never have too many helping hands. There's always something to do, and above all, we need people willing to contribute. After all, if anthropologists haven't misled us, human beings are made to live together and collaborate, not to live in isolation. Here, any help is welcome. We don't have a scale to measure how much is a lot or how much is a little, as that depends on the needs of each project. The important thing is to set goals, organize our time, and distribute the work so we can move forward together at a fair pace. Knowledge of carpentry, construction, and basic tools like drills, hammers, squares, screwdrivers, and rope handling will be useful. There will also be activities related to the garden, the plant nursery, and land maintenance. You don't need to master all these skills, as we can learn many of them together. What we value most is initiative, a willingness to collaborate, and common sense. And, of course, always work with caution, without taking unnecessary risks, because our safety and well-being are more important than any project.

You don't need to worry about accommodations; we have several options. We have a 1200-square-meter plot of land with plenty of space and some tents in good condition. In fact, the plot is surrounded by chain-link fencing, making it a practically private space where visitors can feel at ease. We also have sleeping bags, and if you prefer to relax in a hammock, we have those too! Consider traditional picnics as a starting point, but there's also the option of staying in a covered area, although these can get very hot during the day and even into the evening. For bathing, we have clean water available. We're also fortunate to be located next to the Chacamax River, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim surrounded by nature, provided the river conditions are safe. As for the toilet, we use a composting toilet, an alternative that allows us to conserve water and avoid contaminating the soil and our natural environment. Regarding meals, we have a dining area on the plot that we will all use. We'll share our daily meals: breakfast, lunch, and something light in the evening, like tea, coffee, and perhaps some fruit. My wife, Maria, and I will prepare the food, and if you enjoy cooking, you're welcome to help. Together, we can prepare delicious traditional dishes, prioritizing natural ingredients such as vegetables, grains, soups, and broths. Rest assured, both my wife and I love to cook. I even had the opportunity to do an international vegetarian cooking internship in Chicago and New York, an experience I'd love to share with our guests.

    Por el alojamiento no debes preocuparte, tenemos varias opciones;

Visiting a Chol Maya community and interacting with its inhabitants will be a unique experience. Learning about their way of life through documentaries is not the same as experiencing their customs and traditions firsthand. And I want to reiterate something I consider important: many of these traditions are in danger of disappearing due to the encroachment of modernity and other factors, such as the evangelization some communities have embraced, among other reasons. Aside from that, I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy your stay. You'll hear howler monkeys from time to time and have many opportunities to experience nature. Bring a camera, and if you don't have one, you can use your cell phone. In particular, you should bring insect repellent, as there are insects called "pinolillos," or at least that's what they're known as in the region, that are almost the size of a pinhead and cause skin irritations. Don't forget that we're in the jungle, and there are all kinds of insects here. I've been married for 11 years, and during the long periods we've spent in the region, I've never encountered the infamous nauyaca viper. However, it's always wise to take precautions. Above all, I believe we should learn to live without fear, but with caution. I assure you, you won't be bored, as there's almost always something to do here, and there are few moments of leisure.
