    Why volunteer with us?

    • Make a direct impact on children’s lives.
    • Gain meaningful teaching and cross-cultural experience.
    • Be part of a dedicated and strongly connected community.

Hi, I am Hai Sophan and I am the Managing Director and founder of my school in Areiksat city which is 9km from the city of Phnom Pehn, Cambodia. We opened in 2005 to provide English education to vulnerable children in our community. We currently have 275 students aged 3 to 18. We run multiple classes Monday - Friday between 7:00 am and 7:30 pm . We charge minimal student fees to support running costs, staff salaries, and daily expenses. However, 30 - 40% of students cannot afford to pay these fees, and many others struggle to contribute consistently. Therefore, the volunteers who attend our school are highly valued because they play a crucial role in keeping this school operational and allowing us to continue delivering these English education programs to the children.

While children can access free public education in Cambodia, it is solely Khmer-focused, with no opportunity to learn English. Without English, a child’s future in Cambodia is quite limited, and we feel that every child deserves the chance to have aspirations. We are dedicated to making English classes accessible to all children in our community - especially those who are vulnerable and through quality English language education, we hope to empower them with valuable skills and a chance at a better future.

You can learn about Cambodian culture, food, and language from us. We have a school trip once a month, and volunteers are welcome to participate. On weekends, you can visit local temples or visit the many sites and attractions in and around Phnom Penh. I love to cook, and I am always very happy to share recipes and cook Cambodian meals with you. Volunteers are also very welcome to share recipes and meals from their countries. In their free time, volunteers can visit a swimming pool at a nearby resort (1km from the school). There is access to a gym, market stalls, and there is a mini-market close by.

TEACHING: Primarily, we need help with teaching English to our students. Volunteers with teaching experience or qualifications and/or who are native English speakers would be greatly appreciated. However, if you are interested in teaching English and would like to gain experience in this field, we would also be very interested in hearing from you. The teaching roles generally involve delivering three classes a day: One in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening. Volunteers will receive a class schedule and may be required to take classes on their own. The students will vary in age and ability, and there are some basic teaching resources at the school. Most students have a workbook. For the purpose of providing consistency to our students, we prefer teaching volunteers who can commit to a minimum of a 3-week placement (the longer the better, of course!). In quiet times, we may accept shorter commitments, so you can always check with us.

FUNDRAISING/PROMOTIONAL/ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: Over the years, our school has become neglected. There has not been enough money to look after the facilities, and this is showing. I am very passionate about providing a quality environment to the students and staff, and it is my deepest wish to provide a quality educational facility. Volunteers who can contribute skills in fundraising, grant applications, and social media promotion would be greatly appreciated. Helping with educational administrative tasks would also be appreciated. If you have knowledge and skills in student development, assessment, and review, we would also greatly value your skills and input.

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS: We are also seeking volunteers who can assist with general handyman support. It is important to note that there is not a great deal of money to buy new materials, so volunteers would need to be resourceful and able to work with what is on hand or can be cheaply accessed.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Teaching is delivered in a classroom setting (all classrooms have air conditioning). Teachers are required for approximately 3 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Volunteers can choose to do more hours if they wish. Assistance with homework, supplementary educational programs, or staff shortages may also be required from time to time. Volunteers offering to contribute fundraising, administration, or maintenance work can discuss their hours at the time of their application. We can tailor a role for volunteers interested in mixing the above skills with a teaching placement. Please note that a teacher is a highly respected position in Cambodia, and teachers are regarded as very important role models. Therefore, there is a smart professional dress code at our school. While in class, males are required to wear long pants/trousers. Females may wear pants or a long dress, or long skirt. Please ensure shoulders are also covered.

    Hébergement

We provide volunteers with a free private bedroom with air conditioning at the school. The rooms are upstairs on a level above the school, where there is also a basic shared kitchen and dining space. There is a basic shared toilet and shower room (x 1) for teacher use downstairs. The shower is cold water only.

MEALS: We offer two meal options: Volunteers can purchase ingredients and drinks and manage their own meals at their own cost. Or I can share Cambodian food with them and cook two meals per day (Mon -Fri) for a donation of $ 6 USD per day, per person. This includes coffee and filtered water. I cook a meal (breakfast/lunch) and serve it around 11 am (breakfast/lunch). The second meal is served after the last evening class at approximately 7:45 pm. Food left over from all meals is put into the fridge and can be used and shared amongst the (paid meal) volunteers at any time.

TRANSPORT: There are some bicycles at the school, and volunteers can utilize these for a minimal fee of $1 per day (to cover maintenance costs). We can arrange motorbike hire with a local company for your time here at the school or for weekend trips. We can also arrange transfers to and from Techo Airport and from the city district of Phnom Penh. We are located about an hour from the airport, and the trip from the city will require a ferry crossing. Please note that the people we outsource to for these services, are specifically selected as they are genuine businesses in our local community who are in need of income opportunities. You can make your own way if you prefer. There is a local shuttle bus from the airport to the city. Please let us know in advance if you’d like us to arrange your transfer or motorbike hire.

We love to host digital nomads. There is wifi at the school; however, please note it is a limited service. It can be slow and tends to become overloaded quickly. We try to limit internet use for class and administration purposes during the week. Having some WIFI of your own for personal use would be recommended and appreciated. Please be aware that we also experience electricity and internet outages from time to time. These are often only for short periods of time, but can sometimes last longer. We have learnt how to deal with these outages, and we will support you during these times.
