Description
We are a working dairy, nestled in the mountains (3000 meters) just 30 minutes outside of Cuenca. The farm is very scenic and quiet, with a waterfall, mountain trails, 20 hectares of native forest, and pastures full of friendly cows. There is a lot to explore. We milk 30 cows, grazing the cows in lush mountain grass, moving them to new pastures twice a day.
While we speak English between ourselves, we work closely with an Ecuadorian family that lives on the farm. They are ideal for practicing and improving Spanish language skills.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

We make artisan cheeses with the milk from our cows here on the farm. We are looking for people who want to learn about dairy farming in the Andes, how we make cheese, helping out with the cows and learning about sustainable farming. The cheeses that we currently make include Cheddar, Swiss, Gouda, Parmesan, Monterey Jack, Manchego and Montasio.
We are a large family that is very busy. We are currently making cheese approximately 2 times a week. We teach our volunteers how to make cheese and tips on how to take care of it once it is made. We also have horses that we have available for riding. We move our cows each milking to help the grass recover as quickly as possible. Volunteers would learn about how to move the fence, repair fences and care of the grass that sustains our farm.Langues

Volunteers work 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, in exchange for room and board. We have a large guest house (5 bedrooms, a kitchen, living room, 1 bathroom) to host volunteers. The house is made of wood and somewhat rustic, but very comfortable with a pleasant wood stove to gather around on cool evenings. It is just across the road from the house we live in, nice to have to yourselves to relax in the evening. You would have a private bedroom.
Your stay includes food (we buy what you need and you cook), dairy items such as cheese, yogurt, milk and butter are also available and some very tasty bread.Autres infos...
There is ample time for hiking or exploring. The farm is a good base for checking out Cuenca and the surrounding southern towns. We have a series of waterfalls, that offer some interesting canyoning/repelling for the brave.

Luke, Julie and the kids are so kind and welcoming. We've really enjoyed to share moments with all the family.
It was a pleasure also to meet Gloria and Luis who worked for the farm, we've felt our spanish was quite good after this month with them.

It was a really special time for us. Julie and her family were just friendly, kind, heartwarming and lovely to us.
In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we had to do simple work like to displant weeds or to help Louis, one of the guys who works on the farm.

my girls (10 & 13) and I really enjoyed our stay at the hacienda! the 5 children are all very different and I find each of them very wonderful. Julie and Luke are hardworking farmers and parents who helped us with everything - getting food, driving us to the city or borrowing a backpack. Thanks a lot for this!
