  • Description

Come and be a part of the sustainable foods community with us in beautiful British Columbia!

Hello! We have a beautiful big self sustainable garden in Barriere, BC. We love to live as sustainably as possible - during summer months roughly 90% of our diet comes from food we’ve grown or raised ourselves!

    Vegetables and Potted Plants
We grow all of our own produce along with baking, honey from our own bees, grass fed lamb and beef. Please note that most of your time here will revolve around the vegetable side of things, not animals and we are looking for people with a passion for making things grow, feeding ourselves and learning new skills along the way!
Tasks for vegetables include cultivating, harvesting, weeding, planting and the many other aspects of growing and producing our own vegetables.

    Our Property
The ranch property consists of roughly 1000 acres of combined farmland (mostly hay land), forest, one barn, the ranch house and our house, and equipment storage. Our family have owned the ranch since 1991 and it has been a cattle operation as far back as we know. It is a beautiful property with a healthy ecosystem of natural plants and wildlife which we work to maintain. Our garden consists of 2 acres of corn and one acre of vegetable garden as well as two greenhouses. We are quite proud of our soil, which we have build up with natural fertilization over the past years. We also have reparian protection zones as well as many species of protected wildlife, including a healthy badger population and kerlews.

    About us
We are a Latino/Swiss couple that live in a small home on the edge of the farm. We believe in trying to live as sustainably as possible and most of our diet consists of food from the farm during summer months. We work hard but also do our best to have a good work-life balance. We love meeting new people and sharing with them the market garden experience. I am currently in the process of obtaining a diploma in horticulture and would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding anything green. My husband is an autobody mechanic who works off farm, but is still heavily involved, especially on weekends.

    Learning Opportunities
We are excited to share our experience of farming, gardening, sustainability and the market garden with others. We have many opportunities available for learning, including greenhouse production, planting, seeding, irrigation, marketing, natural fertilization, biological controls used for pest management, and everything else it takes to get our vegetables from seeds to a finished product!

Accommodation is our spare room in our house with a connecting bathroom. During summer months, it may be shared with 2-3 Workawayers. We provide all meals, though extra snacks may have to be purchased on your own. Our diet (especially during summer) consists very heavily of food produced on our farm including grass fed beef, home baked breads, eggs, and of course all of our vegetables. Bedding, towels, and homemade soap is provided as well. We can offer joined trips into town for extra shopping if you require as well but as a whole most food and home aspects are provided. We will share a kitchen, living area (couches, TV, dining area), washer and dryer (though most of our clothes are hung out on the clothesline to dry in the summer) and have a lovely yard for everyone’s use as well!

Please bring: Rubber boots, warm clothes for May/September, comfortable working shoes, bathing suit, summer outdoor clothing (shorts, t-shirts). Please remember that 90% of our work is outside! Bring appropriate clothing. Sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle are also recommended. We do have camping gear for trips but if you have a sleeping bag bring that as well!

    House Rules
Our biggest rule is that we ask that you are respectful to everyone, including our animals, the soil and environment. We are part of the face of the natural, local farming industry. Please dress appropriately, be kind, and be understanding of others. If there are any issues, please feel free to come and talk to us. We like to be open and discuss issues before they become bigger and don’t want anyone to feel frustrated or overwhelmed.
We will ask that you clean the washroom once a week, and clean up after yourself. We take turns with cleaning up the kitchen and cooking on occasion (especially if it’s something you enjoy).
A good attitude makes all the difference in having a positive, healthy work environment. We totally understand everyone has their off days, but ask that you do your best to have a positive attitude and work hard. Growing your own food is hard work and we need people who are committed and understand that it’s not always easy.

    What we are looking for
We are looking for reliable, like-minded interns who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and work hard. Please come prepared, we try to schedule in time for adventure and fun as much as possible but farming is not an industry where the work is easy. We really need people who understand this and are able to put their best foot forward.

    Opportunities in the Area
We do work hard and need people who are able to commit their allotted work time into the garden, but also have lots of fun and are close to Wells Gray park and Sun Peaks resort. Hiking and exploring are definitely options, and there are horses on the farm for those interested in riding. Sun Peaks is incredible during summer months, with many wildflowers and beautiful mountain scenes. We also have some incredible lakes in the area and canoes and kayaks, a boating/camping trip may be an option depending on when you come. We often go to the lake after a hot day of working in the field, with a close swimming lake roughly 15 minutes from the ranch.

    Current seasons tasks
We are currently looking for volunteers for our summer/fall season as well as for 2022! We prefer to book in advance for our summer season though short notice sometimes ends up working out as well. Summer months consist of weeding, weekly, biweekly, and monthly plantings, greenhouse management and care, general plant care, harvesting, etc. It’s a very busy season! We will generally expect you to help 5 hours/day, 5 days a week. There may be longer/shorter days based on the day of week and what needs to be done, the above is a rough guideline. We generally always take Sundays off, and other day off will be rotated depending on how many people we have. We will also schedule in some time for day trips, camping, etc. where possible.
Computer/photography/website design skills are very welcome as well! We love to share our sustainable methods and ideas with others and would appreciate someone with the above skills as well.

We’re looking forward to meeting you! Send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

We’re both Canadian and are from Swiss + Latino families - our home is a bit of a combo of both! We speak Spanish, some Swiss German, and cook Central American, Swiss, and Canadian meals. We love learning about new cultures and countries. Both of us were raised on Canadian farms and have a lot to offer when it comes to learning about farm life and the Canadian lifestyle. We live in a beautiful area with lots of land and animals and are very close to Wells Gray Park and Sunpeaks.

You will always get two days a week off. Sunday’s you will always have off, as well as another day of the week that may change based on what needs to be done. Sunpeaks Resort is beautiful this time of year and is only a 45 minute drive away and has a host of biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities. We are also central to many lakes, with some as close as 15 mins away that are perfect for swimming. Wells Gray Park is also about an hour away and we drive up that way weekly for market. Horseback riding is another option, as we have many horses on the farm and lots of land to explore.

No experience is required, all we are looking for is someone who’s interested in learning new things, is hardworking, cleans up after themselves, can take instruction, and is easygoing. You will be spending a lot of time with the two of us but there are often other workawayers on the ranch as well as the rest of the family. We live on a small home just on the edge of the ranch and about two minutes from the centre of the ranch and the farmhouse. We have been workawayers ourselves so we certainly know what it’s like to be on the other side of the spectrum. We’re just looking to learn from one another, make new friends, and we are definitely the type of people who like to have complete honesty with one another.
