  • Description

Hi. I'm really excited to invite you to our little Village of Riverhurst, Lake Diefenbaker, and Palliser Regional Park.

We are now accepting volunteers for the 2022 season from end of May 2022 - September 2022.

As a member of a local group that volunteers to keep our village looking refreshed and friendly, on behalf of our committee, we welcome you to our little piece of heaven. Small communities such as ours really value volunteers who are, really and truly, the lifeline of this community.

We have many projects on the go that include a wetland restoration, heritage building restoration, managing and expanding our urban forest, Adopt a Tree, Plant a Garden project, managing floral displays, cutting grass and weed whipping, artwork, garden/yard awards, and so on. We would so love to have you join us.

Riverhurst is my hometown. I live at Palliser Regional Park (just 7.5 km away from Riverhurst where the project is located) for the summer months, from May to September.

The Village of Riverhurst is located in the middle of three major cities in southern Saskatchewan about 1.5 hour drive to Moose Jaw and Swift Current, 2 hours to Saskatoon, and about 2.25 hours to Regina. For the majority of the year, the population is 130 people. We are a resort village, so for the summer months the population multiples substantially. The Village of Riverhurst is 3 km from beautiful Lake Diefenbaker and 7.5 km from the hidden gem of the prairies, Palliser Regional Park.

Our village itself has friendly people surrounded by a large farming community. We have a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, beautiful Kiteley Park for the children to play in and visitors to have a picnic and relax in. There is a bed and breakfast, hotel/bar/restaurant, beautiful boutique located in the old livery barn, gas station/groceries, campground, line dancing every Wednesday, and many events at Palliser Park to name a few. The population may be small but we are mighty ☺

Our committee has numerous projects on the go and are always open to new ideas to explore.

    2022 season
    Latter part of May
    - Set up tree nursery including planting 500+ trees. The plan is to also invite Grade 3/4 students from the nearby school to participate.
    - Set up Adopt a Tree, Plant a garden program by building raised garden beds and filling with soil. Set up watering system for each tree.

May/June - Install interpretive signage along wetland walking trail. Build viewing platform.

June - Create pollinator beds. Set up water catchment system for drill at north end of Main Street and Village sign

    June/July - Create walking trail

Mid July - Community members participate in keeping yards tidy, floral arrangements, landscaping, water conservation and environmental action and are judged on such. It's great to have a judge from different location.

Ongoing - General maintenence including watering trees/flowers, cutting grass. Tidy up all mulch, trimming trees within the village.

    2021 season
    - Set up water truck/drip irrigation - done
    - Prune around base of Village trees - ongoing
    - Set up watering system for the Village Sign - done
    - Level walkway and cut grass along entire walking path - done
    - Weed whip and cut grass around trees at Wetland - ongoing
    - Water trees (north end of main and wetland) - ongoing
    - Plant 560 tree seedlings - done
    - Haul flax straw for mulch around trees - done
    - Cut down grass between 2000 ft of tree lines to bare ground with weed whip - done
    - Mulch approximately 2000 ft of tree lines - done
    - Stake holes where trees will be planted - done

    In 2020:
    - a tree inventory of the beautiful canopy of trees in the village has been completed with follow-up work to be done pruning the suckers and water sprouts.
    - self watering planters were purchased for the many floral displays that our committee cares for. There is less to do with watering the flowers but dead heading is still an essential service.
    - 420 trees seedlings were planted and mulched
    - Drip irrigation system was installed on east shelterbelt
    - Village sign with perennials built and planted

    Everyone is welcome.

  • Hébergement

I live and work in Palliser Regional Park only for 5 months in the summer from May to September, and live in a converted shuttle bus. The bus can be used for chilling in when the weather isn't all that nice outside. There is one tent available with a very comfortable mattress and nice area for relaxing. Because I live within Palliser Park and the rules state that I am only allowed one tent on my site, unfortunately I can only provide accommodation for a single person or a couple. This is a campsite so the shower and bathroom are at the shower house.

I do not have the capacity to store meat, milk, eggs or cheese at my campsite as I do not have a powered campsite. The menu is mainly fresh vegetables fruit, dried goods (legumes and grains), canned food, and fresh fish when there's time for fishing.

Please also note: Due to my work schedule, I will cook pancakes for breakfast but other that that it is VERY unlikely that I will cook for you during my work days. The cupboard is open for you though.

    Autres infos...

In your down time, definitely ride across the Riverhurst Ferry to the west side of the lake, go fishing, hiking, golfing, swimming in the pool or late, check out the Rider games on the big screen in the Riverside Inn, shop at the Barn Owl Boutique, sand hills at Beechy. It's a beautiful area and if you like nature, you'll love it here.

Riverhurst has a bar/restaurant, gas station with a small grocery store, library with a computer, and a museum. It's a quaint and lovely little village.

There is a bigger center, Central Butte, that is a 20 minute drive, and on the other side of the lake is the town of Lucky Lake.

I would like this exchange to be a cultural experience as well as a volunteer opportunity. Because I work full time, my availability varies throughout the week. We can work on a schedule together for what works best for both of us. I would like to work together at the project vs having you help alone (that's no fun, right?).

Because I live in a campground, probably a dog is the only pet that I'd be able to accommodate and unfortunately, it would have to be on it's leash. My campsite does not have a fence.
