  • Description

We are really excited to invite you to our little Village of Riverhurst, Lake Diefenbaker, and Palliser Regional Park.

As a member of a local group that volunteers to keep our village looking refreshed and friendly, on behalf of our committee, we welcome you to our little piece of heaven. Small communities such as ours really value volunteers who are (eally and truly) the lifeline of this community.

We have many projects on the go that include a reforestation project and tree nursery, wetland restoration, heritage conservation and heritage walking tour, managing and expanding our urban forest, The Garden aimed at teaching gardening skills to the youth in our community, managing floral displays, cutting grass and weed whipping, artwork, and so on. We would so love to have you join us.

The Village of Riverhurst is located in the middle of three major cities in southern Saskatchewan about 1.5 hour drive to Moose Jaw and Swift Current, 2 hours to Saskatoon, and about 2.25 hours to Regina. For the majority of the year, the population is 130 people. We are a resort village, so for the summer months the population multiples substantially. The Village of Riverhurst is 3 km from beautiful Lake Diefenbaker and 7.5 km from the hidden gem of the prairies, Palliser Regional Park.

Our village itself has friendly people surrounded by a large farming community. We have a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, beautiful Kiteley Park for the children to play in and visitors to have a picnic and relax in, and of course the Riverhurst Wetland. There is a bed and breakfast, hotel/bar/restaurant, beautiful boutique located in the old livery barn, gas station/groceries, campground, line dancing every Wednesday, and many events at Palliser Park to name a few. The population may be small but we are mighty ☺

  • Aide

Our committee has numerous projects on the go and are always open to new ideas to explore.

The wheelchair accessible pathway has recently been installed and the trees planted at the tree nursery. Now there's a backlog of things to do.

The following is a snippet of to dos:
    - Move trees from the nursery locations within the Village (May and June)
    - Move trees into the reforestation project and set up dripline and mulch
    - Tidy up the tree nursery and prep the Village Forest for 2024 plantings
    - General maintenence including watering trees/flowers, cutting grass, weed whipping
    - Tidy up all mulch at the Wetland
    - Tree trimming within the village.
    - Manage community garden/compost area
    - Help refurbish old entrance sign
    - Help create historical walking tour
    - Help at the Riverhurst Bean Festival possibly in the canteen as a fundraiser (July)
    - Give tours of the Riverhurst Wetland
    - Help create program for Dipping Pond

There are so many options all summer long.

  • Hébergement

I live (in a converted shuttle bus and tent) and work in Palliser Regional Park (7.5 km from Riverhurst) from May to September. Your accommodation is in a 5'9" tall, 8' x 8' camping tent with a very comfortable mattress and nice area for relaxing. Because I live within Palliser Park and the rules state that I am only allowed one tent on my site, unfortunately I can only provide accommodation for a single person or a couple.

This is somewhat off grid but I do have access to power and water. This is a campsite so the shower and bathroom are at the shower house though if you're into a cold shower, I have a shower set up at my site.

The menu is mainly fresh vegetables, fruit, dried goods (legumes and grains), canned food, and fresh fish when there's time for fishing. I do not have the capacity to store meat, milk, eggs, or cheese. Due to my work schedule, the cupboard is open for you to make your own meals. We will figure this out though.

There is a concession booth and two restaurants within Palliser Park, as well as a bar/dining in Riverhurst when you crave meat or other food.

I will provide food for two meals a day.

In your down time, definitely ride across the Riverhurst Ferry to the west side of the lake, go fishing, hiking, golfing, swimming in the pool or late, check out the Rider games on the big screen in the Riverside Inn, shop at the Barn Owl Boutique, sand hills at Beechy. It's a beautiful area and if you like nature, you'll love it here.

Riverhurst has a bar/restaurant, gas station with a small grocery store, library with a computer, and a museum. It's a quaint and lovely little village.

There is a bigger center, Central Butte, that is a 20 minute drive, and on the other side of the lake is the town of Lucky Lake.

I would like this exchange to be a cultural experience as well as a volunteer opportunity. Because I work full time, my availability varies throughout the week. We can work on a schedule together for what works best for both of us. I would like to work together at the project vs having you help alone (that's no fun, right?).

Because I live in a campground, probably a dog is the only pet that I'd be able to accommodate and unfortunately, it would have to be on it's leash. My campsite does not have a fence.
