    Update end of September:

I am on holiday until the 17th of October, so please expect longer replies when you have sent a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience :)

We are a charity organisation. Any profits we make through the sale of our vegetables go directly to a Danish fund which supports the improvement of nature and wildlife in Denmark. The estate is owned by this charity organisation who receive all our profit to maintain Danish nature.

The farm is located on an estate on the east coast of Langeland in Southern Denmark, around 3 hours from Copenhagen. The vegetable production takes up 15 ha of the estate, with other farming operations 70 ha, the wild grazing project 245 ha, and forest area of 60 ha.

Our goal is to create a more vibrant and fertile soil so we can grow healthy vegetables and support the local biodiversity. We do this by growing over 70 different vegetable varieties, nutrient recycling and carbon storage. Our vegetables are sold to one of Denmark’s largest food suppliers for all types of commercial kitchens throughout the country. We also deliver to the farm’s own café and farm shop.

In addition to vegetable production, the estate contains many other things such as grain production of old Danish varieties, a livestock consisting of Scottish Highland cattle, black-spotted Jutland dairy cattle, horses and sheep. The farm also has a café and farm shop, castle, museum, tractor and machine exhibition. Nature workshop, guided tours, holiday rentals, glamping tents and shelters.

Langeland is in the heart of Danish farm production. By volunteering at an organic farm, you will have the opportunity to improve your agricultural experience and knowledge of different vegetables and how to grow them. You can take these skills with you all through life.

In the summer months we have had up to 15 volunteers here, and in the winter months up to 5. This in itself is the perfect cultural exchange, with friendly, like-minded people all coming together to share their experiences and stories. We have had lots of laughter, fun and shared experiences together.

In your free time you can explore the island or further, and learn about the history surrounding us here. You can also take a ferry ride to some beautiful islands such as Ærø, and walk along the cobbled streets and see the painted beach huts. Or you can bike around here, through the forests, or down south to see the wild horses.

You will be greeted with an openness to share experience and agricultural knowledge, with a permanent team of 4 workers with background in vegetable production.

As a volunteer here you will be able to follow over 70 crops from start to finish. You will have an everyday life in the vegetable production. This involves planting, weeding, washing, and packing vegetables and filling up the farm shop. Our production is both mechanical and manual. This means that we depend on a lot of physical hours of help to weed, plant and harvest vegetables, but that you may also get the opportunity to be a part of mechanical operations. In the fields where we grow our most diverse vegetables such as a range of lettuces and herbs, our cultivation methods are based on Market Garden principles, so the work is more manual.

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about vegetable farming and production and who enjoy practical work. We expect an open-minded person who is motivated to learn and who is ready for a changeable everyday life with hard physical work, where it is sometimes the weather that determines when you finish. For us it is an important quality for a volunteer to know what is needed of them in situations when you are not directly told what to do – for example putting tools back at the end of your task, tidying up, helping others with their tasks. We will guide you in what needs to be done, but you must take initiative too.

We will start with a trial period of one week so we can see whether it is a good fit for both of us. If it is working out well, we ask for a minimum stay of one month. This is in order to provide you with all the knowledge you need to volunteer here on the farm and to make it a valuable experience for both of us. Something we would like is a committed stay of a month or more, but this will be decided by both parties during the stay.

We ask for help 5 hours a day, with one half hour break for lunch/snacks :) 5 days a week (Mon-Fri). In return, we offer you accommodation and food which you can prepare yourself in the kitchen. You can help yourself to all the vegetables you need from the fields. We can cater to all types of diet requirements.

    MONTHLY TASKS (approximately):

This can change, but information is here to give you a general idea of the tasks that need doing for each month.

January - March: Harvest of root vegetables, preparing vegetable orders. Fixing fences in the fields, general building maintenance, fixing wooden storage boxes, feeding animals, painting, cleaning, beginning to seed and prepare the land for the coming season

April - Planting out of vegetables, preparing vegetable orders

May - September: Our busiest months. Be prepared for some hard work! Planting, weeding, harvesting, preparing big vegetable orders.

October - December: Similar to January to March

    Important information:

For the average volunteer coming here it will be hard, it will be a challenge, not all days will be equally comfortable, but the body will adjust. We had some people showing up with back problems, or almost no strength at all in the lower back, this never really works out. We are patient people here, and never go hard on the newcomers; but if you feel you're not motivated to sweat a little, if you feel that you might not have the back for the job; then please be honest with yourself and think about whether you'd consider yourself a fit volunteer for this job, and most importantly whether this will be a nice and comfortable experience for you. If we find you to be physically incapable of performing the agricultural tasks, or in lack of motivation to do so, we will reserve the right to end the volunteering agreement.

The farm is 25mins walk/10mins bike ride from the beach, which is the perfect place to relax and swim after work.

The nearest village is Lindelse, 10 mins by bike, from there you can take public transport to Rudkøbing, (15 mins bus) the nearest town with supermarkets and shops. There is a closer village called Humble where you can also cycle to in 20 mins- they have some supermarkets and a pizza and burger place.

We can usually collect volunteers from Lindelse, - you should try to take a train to Svendborg and then public bus to Rudkøbing, then you change to Lindelse. You can look on Google Maps to get an idea of the journey times. Public bus tickets have to be bought on the Fyn bus phone app or with a Rejsekort.

Please arrive Monday - Friday as this is within work hours, so someone on the farm can pick you up with a car. The same goes for when you are planning to leave. If we cannot arrange a lift, then it is a approx. 30mins walk from the bus stop in Lindelse to the farm. You can ask for more specific directions by message.
