We are an adult couple composed by Mrs. Chus Parrilla, Spanish, and M. Pascal Angebault, French running a farm situated on the shores of lake Bertrand and at the foot of the glaciers of the Contreras mountain range. It is only accessible by boat. We leave in a family house with all commodities including electricity. The farm consists in Orchard and vegetables garden, cows, horses and poultry.
The property is located between the lake and the Laguna San Rafael National Park so it is an excellent place to practice mountaineering and nautical activities. It is wild and lonely though!
Bricolage et projets de construction
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Genuine spanish and frenchlanguage practices can be of interest for those who would join us and our experience as tour guides in both argentinean and chilean Patagonia allows us to provide interesting hints to the travelers. We also have a comprehensive library about patagonian history although mostly in spanish. As academic in EM- engineering and astrophysics, we love to be learning and telling on different scientific and technical fields; we also have a (growing) experience in organic gardening, animal handling, and more generally how to tend to autonomy (e.g. energetic and alimentary) with a environmental friendly attitude, experience we would be more than happy to share: electricity production, homemade preserves and body care products, organic solutions, water system, all of those constitute our offer for a mutual teach and learn exchange with volunteers.
Expected help in wooden and concrete construction, fences building, from skilled volunteers in these matters.
Flexibility offered and requested according to tasks, weather conditions and mutual interest.
As far as work is concerned, we provide overalls, rubber boots, gloves- leather and rubber-safety glasses, masks and ear noise protections if required.

Accommodation in the family house, in a 2-person bedroom with private bathroom, three meals included.
Volunteers can paddle, swim (cold water), fish, hike, even eventually horse ride. We usually offer them a tour on the lake and a trek to the glaciers or in the property itself (550ha). Next village is 16km away by road after crossing 7km by boat. Finally, we have fishing rods but we would appreciate that you bring your own hooks and flies…
To get there, get the scenic Carretera Austral southward from Coyhaique, reaching km. 250 about, onto the bridge where finishes lake Carrera and begins lake Bertrand ; it is necessary to embark for a journey of about 30 minutes by boat; for that reason and also for logistics ones, it is compulsory to have a confirmed mutual agreement and a meeting date before showing up; spontaneous presentation might not be attended. Considering the remote aspect of the farm, we favour mid-term stays, (typ. duration 3 weeks) for reasons of transport and food supply; for the same reason, it is impossible for us to offer special diets, food being purchased once a month.
Weather conditions and dressing recommendations: one of the Patagonian saying states that here you can experience the 4 seasons in 1 day; and it is rather true…Two phenomenon characterize the Patagonian weather: strong winds and strong radiation effect, all year long. Winds are fortunately not permanent in our place but the proximity of both a massive lake and an even bigger ice field - plus the ocean only 30km away - favors convection and foehn. For those unfamiliar with radiation effect, it means that temperature sensation might be very high despite cold air, and that sunburns are easy to catch. Thus it is important to have a wind stopper coat and ear protections against the wind. For the sun, long sleeves, cap hopefully including neck protection, sunglasses. And of course, warm clothes for the cold (large temperature amplitudes can be observes in summer like 20ºC daytime with 30ºC sensation, and 5ºC at night).

We receive volunteers from October to April, summer season in Patagonia, daylight being otherwise too short for efficient work.
