We are a formally recognised union that works both to serve the community by enhancing the quality and scope of social work provision and to aid the persona and professional development of members through workplace advocacy and skills trainings.
The board is comprised of volunteers from the social work profession and our limited funds are always put towards service provision and enahacement meaning that nothing is lost through bureacracy or management costs.
Social work in Palestine is of particualr importance given the effects of living under occupation on children and adults' psychology, health, daily lives and future prospects. Thefore the work that the union does in uniting and training workers, as well as supporting community initiatives is critical.
We are looking for individuals with English Language skills to assist us in the daily work of the social workers union. The office is located in Bethlehem and we are able to provide volunteers with a host family to stay with, or make needed arrangements for the stay.
Activities and roles vary and we will try our best to match your experience and skill set to the work that you do. Typically this will include writing for the monthly newsletter and general office work as well as attending meetings and conferences in Bethlehem and other Palestinian cities.
Your role will also vary depending on whether you speak Arabic or not and also depending on if you have a background in social work. However we do not require those specific skills- English language and an understanding and interest in both the situation in Palestine and the profession of social work are sufficient.
If you are interested in Understanding the situation in Palestine, visiting Palestinian cities, experiencing the Arabic and Palestinian culture and learning or practicing Arabic then we believe that you will gain a lot from your time with us in Bethlehem.
Also the union is an umbrella for many other Social Services associations in Bethlehem and around, so we can meet your need in social work experience if not at the union itself, so we have partners who work with Disability, youth, women issues, psycho support, sociology, counseling, and other related professions.
