We can pay the local wage - about $350 US per month - and also provide a room in a shared volunteer house. This is a beach community, an hour's flight from Istanbul.

Avsallar is directly located at the Mediterean Sea and geographically located in Asia, even in the Orient:) Therefore you will be able to experience a very interesting culture when coming from Overseas. You do not necessarily need to speak the language since it is a very touristy place where many locals know another language on top. The weather is always nice and warm and if you wanna cool down, the beach is directly in front of your nose.

We are looking for help on our devoted animal rescue project on the Turkish coast. In Avsallar, we sponsor daily feeding of hundreds of street cats at over 50 feeding stations. Caregivers assist by delivering food (by scooter, by car or on foot), by helping to transport cats to the veterinarian and by relocating cats to our new sanctuary which is under construction. Compassion, RELIABILITY and a true love of animals are the essential building blocks for a good experience here.

In Avsallar, Turkey, a volunteer effort has been underway for 9 years now. It started with one woman, Manuela Wroblewski, who noticed the plight of the cats when visiting with her family from Germany. She decided to stay in Turkey to help the cats, and over time, took on the role of becoming a Mother Teresa to these animals. My small charity offered funds to help feed the animals, and now we are trying to assume more of a leadership role as Manuela plans to return to her home country.

Today, the goal of the project is to provide daily meals to street cats, to spay/neuter, to adopt internationally where possible and to help those who are injured or sick. We have now reached a stage where a sanctuary is being put together to take many of the cats permanently. It is very challenging to find people within this Turkish community who have the willingness to help and the reliability to turn up for work each day. That is why we’ve really needed to look for international help.

This is very rewarding as the cats truly need the daily food and water for survival, particularly during extreme heat. However, it can be very challenging work because there are tragedies for some of the cats hit by cars and simply to see so many in need in a community where some locals dislike animals.

We have many needs in this project. Ideally, volunteers would stay a minimum of 2 months to help with some of the following:

    1. Daily delivery of meals to street cats by scooter or car This can take 8 hours a day.
    2. Help identifying a phone app that tracks “delivery routes” and shows when the caregiver stops at each location to leave food and water for the cats. We need to find a good app and install it on each persons phone so we can be sure each group of cats is receiving care daily.
    3. Helping trap cats for spay/neuter
    4. Helping make the under-construction sanctuary more of a home for the cats. The first enclosure was built but really is stark. It needs climbing structures, hiding spots and all kinds of cat comforts. The sanctuary construction /design also needs some changes for the security and happiness of the cats.
    5. Ongoing work on the sanctuary: There is one section for dogs – I believe 6 rescued from a diabolical pound, and I’d like to see their environment and daily routine greatly improved.
    6. Care for the cats living at the flat of our current project manager, Manuela, who will be coming back to relocate all of her cats over the course of the next year once she is re-established in Germany.

The weather is very hot right now in Turkey. It’s a time of year when the animals need water especially from our daily deliveries
