Description
We are a 3rd generation family owned ranch located in the West Chilcotin of BC, surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes and wildlife.
Our animals consist of cattle, horses, dogs and cats. Our busiest time of the year are the spring and summer months. Calving starts at the beginning of April and runs until mid-May then free range turn out begins. This includes range riding on horseback, quads and dirt bikes. We begin irrigating at the same time. We put up all our own hay - haying begins mid-July. Once fall rolls around we round up the cattle. Winter hits and work slows down, we mostly spend the days feeding cattle and working on odd jobs like building fences and repairing the machinery. Every day is a new adventure with an assortment of jobs to be done.
Our interests consist of hiking, mountain biking, dirt biking, canoeing, hunting, snowmobiling and many other outdoor activities.

The ranch has all amenities such as running water, power, wifi, phone etc. We don't have cell phone service. We have 2 main locations. One is located right in Tatla Lake which consists of a Restaurant, motel, general store and a health clinic etc. This ranch is backed onto Tatla Lake itself. The second location is in a valley, 20 minutes away, with the Homathko river running through it.

I spent 6 weeks on the ranch in Tatla Lake (from end of July to beginning of September) and I'm so glad I did.
Summer = Hay season for cattle ranchers, which means long days driving tractors and working out in the field - presumably like on any other farm as well...

I stayed on the Ranch as a workaway from the beginning of the calving season untill just after the start of the open ranch season. Experiencing different lifestyles is one of the main things Workaway travellers are looking for and that is something you will definitely find, living and working in Tatla Lake.

Working seven days a week from 8:00… read more till 22:00 wasn't out of the ordinary, but those days feel o so good. Driving big machinery, catching and chasing cows and calfs, giving them medicine, tagging, branding, repairing or builiding fenches and all this driving quads everywhere you go.
Here are some of my favourite moments: I had a close encounter with a brown bear and a Grizzly bear while being on foot in the bush (adrenaline included), did a C section on a cow, swung a newborn calf around untill it started breathing, pushed back a prolaps and stitched it back up, seeing black bears and moose every now and then and just driving and drifting in the meadow over ice and through mud and water on the quads.
Speeking about that, don't be afraid to get dirty. Within 10 minutes my pants were covered in mud, blood and uterine fluid at the beginning of a new day. But who cares, it will eventually wash off ;) and it is a good way of life.
I lived my entire stay by myself in the so called 'white house', this because of the strange Covid-19 times. Anyhow, everyone tries to make sure that you feel welcome and at home. Christianna and Ruth are the 2 awesomly sweet ladies who made sure I a had enough of everything and even took me on spontaneous road trips, fishing trips or shooting at the gun range. They are kind hearted and totally badass at the same time. I did not get to know Carol that well, but she also is a kind lady and the right person to have a good conversation on a roadtrip with ;).
I also spend a couple days with Magnus and Tianna and you got to love their chemistry, they really cracked me up good quite a few times.
Watching Lars work is fascinating, because you can really see all the experience he has gathered through the years. I really enjoyed working with him, because he constantly points out cool things in the area and he tells some great stories about these things or other things in general. Lars, I really hope you get to have grandchildren some day, because they wil love to listen to your stories just as much as I did.

Don't worry about not being able to do things beside the ranch work. If you are willing to work, it won't be a problem at all to get some time off and discover the area by quad, car or canoe.
Don't forget to bring along a good sense of humor tho! ;)

I had an amazing time, learned a bunch of new stuff and made a lot of great memories, thanks to all of you!
I will swing by for sure, whenever I make a road trip in BC.

Thank you soo much!
I had five great weeks at your ranch in beautiful Tatla Lake and I miss it already, although I´m still here.
The breathtaking scenery, (no matter where I went or where you took me, it was just stunning!), the animals (my little patients and orphans, all the cuddly dogs… read more and Oreo, the best bush-horse I´ve ever ridden) and -most important- you guys.
You made me feel home right away, you believed in my skills and gave me self-confidence to try new things. Things I would probably never have tried on my own. Your attitude "You can do anything you want" rubbed off on me. I actually figgured, that I can do a lot more, than I thought I could.
I learned how to drive a tractor and a fourwheeler (even in rough terrain), how to fix things, figure things out on my own and tons of other stuff.
I´ve learned a lot for my future life, useful and important skills for the bush, cattle-breeding, how to fence or simply how to deal with surprises of everyday´s life and that you don´t need a "plan b", when you didn´t have a "plan a" ;-)
I´ve worked a lot, chased hundreds of cows for many hours on horseback, on the fourwheeler and sometimes on foot, got dusty all over and dirty and on some days I really was happy to see my bed.
Although some days were long, I only had good days and I thought about it know for a while now but there was no day on which I did not have fun.
Some days I will never ever forget, for example the double breakdown in the bush with the truck and the fourwheeler and my hitch-hike home, my 8 hours horseback ride along Tatla Lake or the plane-trip to look for cows on your huge ranges.

The following is for workawayer who are reading the profile and are obviously interested in this ranch:
JUST DO IT!
You won´t forget your stay in Tatla Lake, the wild west of Canada.
It´ll (maybe) be different from everything you´re used to, no cell-service at all and it´s quite remote, but there´re stunning views whereever you go and you´ll learn a lot of things if you are interested.
Lars is a great host and company, full of knowledge and funny storys he likes to share, super patient and if you fail - don´t worry and try again.
The accomondation was lovely, I had my own bedroom and a comfy bed, and even the opportunity to choose the TV-channel in the evenings or days off.
Carol is a perfect host grandma and a good cook, the food was always delicious and the desserts to die for.
Christiana and Sandra make the best burgers and fries in town and they always makes sure you don´t leave hungry or thirsty.
You´ll probably see lots of wildlife like bears, moose, cariboos, eagle, coyotes and wolves.
On your days off you can go canoeing on the little lake in Tatla, go swimming in Tatla Lake, visit Tatlayoko Lake/Valley, go hiking, horseback riding, or just hang out.

I can highly reommend it. I thank all of them and everybody who made my stay memorable and if I can get a chance to come back, you´ll definitly see me again.
