    Description

Thanks for inquiring. My name is David Malawian with tumbuka roots, born in a family of 5 children 3girls and 2 boys. My father is a retired primary school teacher and my mom is jobless.

I'm a a social worker and my passion in life is to contribute to a better environment, changing places and changing lives.

Special interests are gender issues/female empowerment, inequality issues and to make sure everyone can enjoy the basic human rights, such as access to education and basic health care.

I love treavelling, I am used to meeting people from different cultures so I would say I'm interculturally competent.

I am the chief Executive Officer and founder of a newly formed organization that is just taking its shape.

    2. Recently we are very focused on improving the conditions by lifting up adolescents and children's livelihood from the street/slums by preparing them with soft and technics skills such carpentry (Woodwork), welding, computer, business skills as well as self-awareness at the end we eager to connect them with different job opportunities, resume school, connect with shelters and families. Moreover, the organization provides lessons for those who don’t know how to read and write. We need your experience in employability and turn ideas into a valuable job or creating jobs from surrounding challenges

    3. Sexual and reproductive health Rights Project

In order to contribute to the girl’s empowerment, the organization chose to focus on education. Many girls are not informed on how to handle their monthly period properly and miss school because they feel uncomfortable. Or they drop out after getting pregnant. This leaves them with a worse education than the male students are able to receive, limiting their future prospects. To avoid that, the organization takes responsibility by implementing sex education courses in secondary schools to raise awareness and provide accurate information to the students

Among other future projects we want to: (a) Build a youth learning center as well as a proper nursery place for children and (b) build volunteer houses

Traveling by yourself is not a problem. We will guide you all the way to us; we can even make sure someone assists you. Please feel free to contact us if you need more information than what is provided here, we are happy to answer all your questions and provide the best advice on general issues such as health, culture, weather, excursions, travel, visas, safety, and special events. Also, please be sure to find us on social networks!

Workaway will help me in the following activities

We need help to prepare a fundraising project ( attracting donations, applying for grants to implement the project). Work on:

    a) Youth Empowerment - shelter, food, emotional support, child rights, skills development, technical training, job skills, livelihood

    b) Health & Education - SRHR, triaged health services, psychosocial/emotional support, partnerships with local health facilities/authorities to facilitate referrals, training on making pads, personal hygiene

    c) Community engagement - local government, schools, social welfare offices, child and gender desk leaders, MOH, parents, family

Our works focus on fields such as training, workshops, meetings, monitoring, coaching, mentoring.

    Fundraising and Awareness

In order to further develop, improve conditions, and maintain our place, we mostly need help with fundraising and grants. There is a lot of work being done every day, but still, the biggest challenge is money.2. Webpages developing, graphics design and programming.
We are looking for anyone who has an ideas to improve the development of our webpages or designing webpages on website of our organization as well as expert in graphics, photography, videographer and designing posters, flyers, business cards, stickers, brochures, rebranding banners and design organization handbooks or profile book.

    3. Help with social media and marketing (taking pictures and videos editing with your own camera)
    - Help us spread the word to friends, family, colleagues or other society members via facebook, instagram and emails (any social network), so that we can reach as many people as possible and get more likes, shares, comments and reviews or donation in order to raise awareness of education and reach out our goals.

    4. Helping in building classrooms, computer lab and Library.
    - We need volunteers who aren’t afraid of getting dirty hands by helping us in building and construction in general. As a plus you can help with building interior equipment like bookshelves or useful things.
    - Other facilities and supplies for the school are needed, These includes furnitures, textbooks, laptops or computers, camera or binoculars, office chairs, office tables, printers e.t.c.

    5. Workshops in health class, sexual education and menstrual hygiene.
    - Help out by conducting workshop to school drop out girls, young women and youth who faces a great challenges of lacking awareness on health issues and sanitary resources which leads to school drop outs, poor performance, lack of job opportunity, early marriage, unwanted pregnant and poverty in general.

We would truly appreciate the help of a volunteer who could come with new financing ideas, how to make new partnerships, or create a way for us to make money independently. Also if someone could come and help to spread awareness of our project around the world. So, if you have the willingness and/or experience with grant writing, fundraising, report writing, or if you know organizations, people, or businesses that could support us, you could make a huge difference!

    Additional HELP
Volunteers are also very welcome to use the skills they have to contribute to our project, especially within our children's center/shelter program.

This means you can be directly involved in the available daily activities visit the street, family visit, prepare lessons, deliver lessons to students, artwork, playing with children, help with preparing meals, help with house-work, homework, general counseling, computers/internet and as well as gardening, help on the post, maintenance to our website and social media, woodwork, carpentry, documentation, report last but not the least fundraising

I would like volunteers /interns to work with us for 3 weeks or longer, preferably one month, even a year and above. We provide plenty of amazing experiences!

•Working with children in the families and Community by safe guarding them.

▪︎As a small NGO, we are always in need of an extra pair of hands in the office. In addition to working in the field, a large part of running an NGO is spent at the office. If volunteers are skilled and interested in volunteering at the office, they can help with writing and editing proposals, research, carrying out fundraising activities, assisting with online marketing, updating social media and website design in addition to their field volunteering tasks. Skilled photographers or film makers can also contribute by making promotional materials for our local NGO

However a volunteer will be free to propose other activities not specfied as above. We are free to develop an action plan with the volunteers.

Volunteers are also free to work extra or less hours.

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

Most volunteers opt for our homestay accommodation option, where you will be hosted by the Chief Executive Officer in their family home. This is a great opportunity to experience the unique culture of Malawi and to interact and make friends with a local family. You will have your own room and private space for sleeping or relaxing in the evenings. We will do our best to ensure that you are comfortable and well looked after during your stay.

Your food will be prepared by the family and you will receive 3 meals a day. The food mainly consists of tea/coffee and some bread/cake/porridge or potatoes for breakfast. For lunch and dinner we generally eat rice or nsima (a local dish made from maize flour) with some vegetables, beans, meat or fish. Sometimes, fruit or salad will also be served. This is the staple food here and we hope you learn to love it! Volunteers will also be able to help their host family with preparing the food and even cook a dish from their own country if they wish.

We have a house of 5 rooms, Its a fenced house.Security is good,Nice vegetation,Easy access to town. We stay near the lake malawi. Good comfortable rooms,We provide good meals .

They will be well treated with kindness ,love and alot of care. We speak English fluently so it will be easy to understand each other. They will be provided with good food because we have a Chef at my house.
Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements before arriving - Vegetarian, vegan and other diets can be catered for. If volunteers require any other snacks beside the three main meals these can easily be purchased in the local market or a nearby supermarket. Bottled water is not included but is also available in the supermarket.
If the volunteer prefers to stay on their own, other arrangements are also possible. For volunteers that are travelling in a car or are carrying tents, we can provide free access to a fenced space with running water and sanitation facilities. If needed, we can also provide a charcoal stove for cooking.

●THINGS TO DO IN YOUR TIME OFF

Karonga is located close to the northern shores of the lake, where you can go swimming, kayaking, and relax in your free time. You can also go on a cruise on the lake. We have a museum in town that shows some findings of prehistoric humans, a dinosaur and information about Malawian history and culture. For those who wish to explore another part of Malawi, you can visit Livingstonia, and go hiking in the beautiful scenery of the Nyika Plateau. You can visit different mines in the area if you are interested in mining. It is also possible to travel to Nkhata Bay for a weekend and go scuba diving in the lake there. The Vwaza Wildlife Reserve and National Park are both easily accessible from Rumphi - wildlife viewing can be done from a game viewing vehicle or on a bushwalk for the more adventurous.
Alternatively, you can stay in Karonga where you can experience village life and culture, enjoy Malawian music, dance and learn some traditional cooking. Volunteers must arrange extra activities themselves and cover the cost of travel, food and accommodation.

Also, if volunteers are interested we can go for a photo trip around and you will always find something new and different to explore.
Volunteers can fill their free time by watching TV ,reading a book, going for swimming , doing exercises at a local gym...
Some can help me with writing stuff if the is a field of their interest.
We will help you to grow in every way that works the best for you.

The opportunities are eternal and it's all about sharing experiences, gaining new skills and contributing, from both sides!

●WE ARE ALWAYS VERY GRATEFUL FOR ANY RESOURCES VOLUNTEERS CAN BRING WITH THEM SUCH AS:

-Educational and reading books, educational toys and posters, colouring books, stationery and toys for preschool, Balls for Men And Women - as schools are often very under resourced.
-Laptops, cameras or USB memory sticks that you or your friends and family are no longer using, as we work from a very basic office.
What to do before you come

Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own visas, travel insurance and travel vaccinations. We recommend that volunteers take malaria tablets while staying in Malawi, which should be attained before your visit. Visas can be arranged in advance or at the border.
To enjoy your stay more, we suggest volunteers come prepared. For example, teaching volunteers can research teaching activities, songs and games to teach students. If you are volunteering in our office, it would be useful to bring your own laptop as we don’t have any to spare.

    ●WHAT TO BRING

This will vary from person to person for personal items, but we do recommend you bring the following:
    Personal medication
    Travel insurance details
    Insect repellent
    Sun cream
Culturally appropriate clothes (women should wear dresses, skirts and trousers below the knee and not too tight) and clothes with light material, as it can get very hot in Karonga.
A laptop or tablet if you can – especially if you want to work in the office.
    A SIM-unlocked phone.
    Toiletries
A torch, and ideally a solar lantern because of the blackouts.

    ●VISA REQUIREMENTS

A valid passport with at least six months to expiry date is required to enter Malawi. There are no Volunteer Visas in Malawi, so all volunteers should apply for a Tourist Visa and give “tourism/travel” as the reason for entry on the form. We do not recommend that you apply for the visa in advance, as this is a simple process which can be done at the airport or other port of entry. Those staying less than 90 days who are not planning on leaving the country in this time can purchase a single entry tourist visa ($75 USD for most nationalities) which is initially valid for 30 days but can easily be extended (for free) up to 90 days at the immigration office in Karonga. Those who plan on staying longer than 90 days should go for the 6 month multiple entry visa ($150).

    ●HOW TO GET HERE

Most international flights go to Lilongwe International Airport. From Lilongwe you can get an executive coach to Karonga, which is usually an overnight journey. Alternatively, you can get a coach to Mzuzu and there you can catch a minibus to Karonga on your own. Upon special arrangement, a member of our staff may meet you in Mzuzu or even in the airport and escort you to Karonga using the local mini-buses. If coming from Tanzania, you will need to cross the border and take either a bus or local shared car to Karonga. One of our members can meet you at the bus station or we can provide you with the location of our office where you can meet us upon arrival in Karonga. We are always available via phone and Whatsapp for any queries.

    ●MEDICAL MATTERS

The main potential problem affecting volunteers is malaria. We highly recommend all our volunteers to organise malaria medication prior to travel. Make sure you are taking your anti-malarial tablets each day (or week, if you are taking Larium), and continue to take them for the recommended time after you get home. You should also use a mosquito net (provided in the homestays), apply mosquito repellent and try to cover yourself up at night.
HIV/AIDS is a problem all over Malawi and many volunteers arrive unaware of the risks involved in entering into relationships. All volunteers in such a situation, whether they consider themselves to be in long-term or short-term relationships, should make sure they use condoms.
We also recommend that all our volunteers purchase comprehensive travel/health insurance prior to travel. If a volunteer should fall sick there are hospitals and doctors available and there will always be someone available to assist them with getting to appropriate health services.

    ●CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

Note that you may find the culture very different from western countries, especially in terms of working pace. People here are not always time conscious - Sometimes they report later than the agreed time for work and they may not give excuse. As an organization we learn a lot from our volunteers and we are trying to bring change to the communities we work with.Volunteers are expected to set a good example by arriving on time for their activities.

    ●OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In general Malawi is considered a safe country where tourists are not at great risk, however visitors to the cities should make sure to watch their bags and carry only small amounts of cash when out and about. There are many ATMs in Karonga, and to withdraw money you will need either VISA (commonly accepted) or MASTERCARD (only occasionally accepted). The maximum withdrawal per transaction is MK100,000.
Female volunteers should be aware that in the towns and villages it is respectful to have your knees covered (and in some cases, your shoulders). Some practices in Malawi are very different to what volunteers may be used to at home. Visitors do not have to agree with all the customs around them but should act respectfully towards them and endeavour to understand the complex cultural history that has often shaped them.

    Thank you
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing to volunteer with us. we are looking forward to working with and sharing our culture with you.
