Come help and stay at an exciting urban farming permaculture experiment in the middle of Leipzig, Germany! Located in Plagwitz Leipzig a few meters from the artists complex Spinnerei, stands the former "Lack Fabrik der Gebrüder Gaelleh" (est. 1884). In 2015 my husband and I bought the then abandoned property and began the process of transforming this forgotten urban space into an edible urban oasis. There are two original buildings on site remaining, the former Fabrikanten Villa and the Verwaltungsgebaude (former office building/ barn). Of the two, we have now; mainly by ourselves between our normal jobs, completely restored the Verwaltungsgebaude fusing historical elements with modern flair. In the coming year we will begin the formative task of restoring the Villa. In the meantime we have established a small (1500m2) urban farming wonderland in the middle of a former industrial district of Leipzig that currently is undergoing a resurgence of cultural affluence.
While maintaining our day jobs- David a musician in the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Peter founder of a public communications company, we have planted over 400 differents species of plants (65% edible), maintain a small apiary currently 7 hives, collected fresh eggs from our 10 happy chickens, and fatten up and entertain four turkeys, not to mention playing with the two cats that cruise around the property.
We are looking for help and ideas in our DIY experiment of urban regengeration.

As we are both working professionals we are looking for help with the "day to day" of small farm operations. These include feeding and entertaining the animals,( chickens, turkeys, bees and cats, for now...), help in the apiary but mainly with the coming honey harvest, watering plants, creating new guilds in the fruit orchard etc.. In addition we are avid collectors from fleamarkets across europe so often help in the restoration of old furniture is needed. Small carpentry projects are a constant part of our tasks here in addition to larger construction projects in and outside of the house. From time to time events are held here so help in our private Biergarten would likely also be a part of your experience here. These however are purely private functions and while you may meet quite interesting members of the local community and beyond, these functions are by no means commercial but rather an opportunity to engage as local citizens or simply socialize.
Provided acommodation is a guest room with double bed and private shower and sink in room. The room is about 10m2 and is comfortable for a couple or alone. On the main floor of the house is a shared living space and large kitchen with all the amenities. During your stay you can eat from the garden, enjoy fresh eggs and honey, make coffee in the kitchen or pour yourself a cold beer direct from the tap.
Leipzig is a fascinating city in the former eastern part of Germany. Located by train 1hr15mins from Berlin or about 3hrs from Prague. With a long cultural and political history, Leipzig is a city that offers something for everyone. In the past decades it has become an alluring hotspot for artists and startups looking for an attractive alternative to Berlin. Enjoy concerts in the Gewandhaus or Thomas Church respectively the former employers of Mendelssohn and J.S. Bach, explore the studios of artist from the Neue Leipziger Schule like Neo Rauch or Tilo Baumgärtel, paddle a canoe through the city's canals or explore one of the many lakes and castles in the surrounding area. Afterwhich you can relax with a beverage in the city's numerous pubs and restaurants or discover new popup bars in abandoned buildings around the city before heading out into the night in some of Germany's most revered clubs.
