  • Description

    As the result of the political and social events of its recent history, Cambodia’s social and ethical values of centuries were systematically destroyed, resulting in the majority of people living in poverty with very few opportunities to improve their situation.

    This is particularly evident in the rural areas of Cambodia. Youths, both boys and especially girls, often suffer from the effects of lack of education, low self esteem and self confidence which can often lead to alienation from families and social networks, crime, violence and perpetuation of the poverty cycle.

    The organization was founded in 2006, to provide low cost English language education program to poor rural youth, which is supplemented by programs focusing on motivation, self worth, self confidence and discipline. In the short term, this provides opportunities for youth to improve their own situation in life, and in the long term contributes to improve the human resources in Cambodia.

    The organization is a Khmer run NGO, registered with the Ministry of Interior .

    The organization aims to provide:

    A high level of English communication skills;
    Job preparation skills;
    Self-discipline and concentration;
    Increased belief in self, accompanied by reduced self-consciousness models;
    Improved inter-personal relationship skills, including inter-gender relationships;
    Emphasis on equality of treatment, opportunity and respect;
    Leadership skills;
    Responsibility; and
    Awareness of important social issues

    What do we expect from our volunteers?

    We are looking for english speakers who could spend 2 or 3 hours every day with a class to talk with the students and teach them basic lessons in english.

    In the morning, the teaching hours are from 07:00 AM to 08:30 AM and from 09:00 AM to 12:00 AM. In the afternoon, there is two hours practice and one more english lesson from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. The precise time you would like to spend teaching is up to you, and it has to be decided with the staff on your first day of work.

    As you show commitment for a specific task while you are volunteering, you have a responsibility towards the children and the whole community. Therefore, it would be necessary to be realistic about the duration of your stay. Organizing classes as well as food and accommodation for the volunteers needs careful planning.

    We ask you to offer around 2 or 3 hours per day, however this may be longer if you want to. On weekends, you can choose to help out with the garden and other general jobs or projects, or you can have free time to visit the interesting places and local area.

    We want you to feel part of this project and feel that this is your home while you are here, therefore, we invite you to join in as much as possible and enjoy the experience.

    Due to the rural location and the economic situation of our students , they rarely come in contact with English speaking foreigners. Face to face access to English speaking volunteers at our school provides:

    improved confidence for students in speaking English with foreigners,
    improved pronunciation and writing of the English language by the students and the staff, and assistance to staff in English capacity building where necessary.

    What is the Accommodation Like?

    Volunteers have three options for accommodation.

    1. The center has no house for the volunteers to stay in, but there are guesthouses nearby. Often the international volunteer prefer to stay near to but not actually in the school as most of the students sleep on the floor on mats, wake up at 5 to exercise and take a shower outside. During the application process we will discus this with you and when you arrive you can see the accommodation and make your own decision.

    2.Accommodation can be in a well serviced guesthouse 50m from the school. The rooms are clean and include towels and sheets, two beds and a small ensuite, mosquito /fly screens, no cooking facilities. It also includes the reserving of the room whilst Volunteer is at times sightseeing/in Phnom Penh on weekends.The cost of the guesthouse will vary depending on preferences for example A/C or fan. Also a discount can sometimes be negotiated for longer stays. But a double fan room will cost $7.

    3. Volunteer costs: $3 USD per day, per person, for meals

    We suggest that volunteer should stay for a minimum of 1 week and we much prefer to have longer term volunteers as we feel that long term volunteer have a much more positive impact. But we will accept volunteers for a shorter period if they are dedicated.

    While volunteering volunteers should contribute $3 per day for food.

    We can also arrange to pick you up from Phnom Penh airport for a fee of $80- $100.

    What type of Food is included?

    Simple Khmer meals including rice, vegetables, fish cooked on site at the school by the student cooks.

    Do I need a Visa?

    Those who arrive by bus can get a business visa at the boarder point. However recommend you obtain visas in your country of origin where possible prior to you arrival.

    What arrangement should I make for Traveling to the School?

    Takeo is about 78km from Phnom Penh and transport with a representative of our organisation will be by public bus (safe) – the journey takes around 2 hours and costs around 15,000 reil ($3-4 USD). Taxi leaves Takeo Town regularly in the morning and afternoons to Phnom Penh and visa versa, and have been used regularly by previous volunteers to go back to the “ bright lights’ of Phnom Penh on weekends.

    What is Takeo Town Like?

    Takeo is a regional centre, not a tourist center, and as such does not have western restaurants and cafes as is available in Phnom Penh.. However there is local shopping, local restaurants, bank and ATM (Visa) and a market in town where the Volunteer can walk to buy any personal items or fruit and other supplies. The Volunteer can hire a motorbike or push bike for local traveling however we recommend that you bring a helmet.

    Reil is the common currency, however small currency $USD are also acceptable in Takeo.

    Volunteers can take a bus back to Phnom Penh on weekends or organize some other sightseeing during the weekends such as Sihanoukville / Kampot, Kep.

    There is a laundry facility 20m from the school where items are washed with a one day turn around for a small fee, or alternatively can be washed by Volunteer at the school.

    What do I Bring?

    Sleeping bag ( optional), personal toiletries/medicines, hat, slip on scuffs(rubber thongs or the like) lightweight clothes, T shirts and shorts, a pair of long pants/skirts, wet weather jacket, headlamps, day packs, iPods and portable DVD player( optional), English speaking DVD (can be watched by students on movie nights), travel cloths line, travel towel, DEET, any teaching equipment you may want – however there is a teaching books supplied, pens/pencils/dictionary.

    How do I keep in touch with family and friends?

    Internet: The organization does have internet connection, but is usually well used most of the time. The volunteer can access internet at the school when it is not busy, however there is a free internet service provided by a partner organization about 5 minutes by bicycle ride away and internet cafes’ in the town that can be used usually for around 2000 Riel/ hour (50 c/hr).

    Cell Phone: Whilst you can utilize your own phone on ‘roaming’ it is often expensive. You can obtain a cheap SIM card and phone for Cambodia only calls or utilize a cheap international call phone company which is about 0.12 c per minutes. If utilizing a Cambodian SIM card in your own phone you should ensure you home mobile is unlocked and can accommodate a another SIM card. On approval of you application the Volunteer Co-ordinator will advise you on the best approach for you. Note that the unlock of the phone can be done in Cambodia most of the time.

    Where can I go shopping?

    The town centre is about 5 – 10 minutes by motorbike from where you will be staying and from the school. You can buy some local food, clothes, teaching supplies and other day to day items. There is a western style convenience store in town as well. However any major shopping as a tourist is better undertaken in Phnom Pehn.

    Can I learn Khmer language while I am volunteering?

    Staff at the organization are happy to give Khmer class for free on arrangement with the school .

    Do I need to obtain a Police Clearance before I apply?

    On application the school will determine if a police clearance is required from your country of origin. If so, this can be sent to the email address and then application and time periods confirmed.
