    Description

Hei! I am Line and after many own Workaway adventures, I now also want to welcome travellers, who want to come help us while exploring the North. Aakash and I bought a house on Senja some years ago, and our current mission along our jobs is to finish renovating the house and garden, trying to turn it into a nice vacation place that we, guests, our friends & family can enjoy.

    The area:
The island we are on, Senja, is the second largest in Norway located right in between Tromsø and the Lofoten. We are connected to the mainland via a bridge so it is easy to reach, and the area is so scenic that it is often used in advertisements and wedding shoots. Most travellers visit to enjoy Senja's white sand beaches or hike up the famous Segla mountain, the track start only a few meters from the house. Apart from several hiking tracks, our village also has a small supermarket with an integrated café corner, a pub, and a sauna boat floating in the harbor next to a small beach that is only visible at low tide. Our village is located amidst untouched nature, nestled inbetween the mountains on one side and the fjord on the other. From our house, you get lovely views of both. When you get lucky, you might be able to observe the small whales, otters, sea eagles, and even the midnight sun or aurora directly from the bedroom windows.

We would love to arrange some activities together and to show you around whenever possible. Even in busy times when we can't go on adventures together, we are happy to share some hidden gems and advice for the area, of course we also know lots of great spots for hiking and photography. We have some sports equipment we can lend you and are happy to teach you how to use snowshoes to properly explore the area. We could also show you some local movies, teach you some words in Norwegian (Bokmål), and how to make our favorite kanelsnurr (cinnamon buns) or proper Norwegian waffles. Just let us know what you are curious about :)

    Current update:
Because of our jobs, we will temporarily be based about 1:30 h away, just outside Tromsø. We will therefore only be on Senja occasionally. Even though we won't be there the whole time ourselves, we could still welcome travellers in our home on Senja in our absence. What we can offer until we are back fulltime ourselves is for Workawayers to help us half the normal hours in exchange for accommodation. This is not housesitting, but instead of up to 5 hours of help, we are only looking for half the hours of concrete tasks around the house and garden like weeding, cleaning, or shovelling snow. Even though this would be different from our normal Workaway experience, it might still be interesting for travellers, who are pursuing their own projects, working or studying from home, or simply want to spend lots of time out exploring the surroundings. You will get an amazing base to explore Northern Norway, hike, ski, observe the Northern lights, and simply enjoy nature. We will still come to Senja whenever possible, and are also happy to arrange for you to come visit and stay with us near Tromsø if you wish to explore both places!

So depending on the time you are interested in, different arrangements might be possible:

    A) When we are on Senja ourselves (mostly until September), we will be trying to do some light maintenance. Some examples of what we will be up to could be levelling and taming our garden, pulling weeds, finishing to set up some new furniture, sanding and fixing chipped paint inside and outside, or trying to organize our chaotic basement and attic. We will surely find something you can do, and need about 5 hours of help. In return, we will of course provide all food and are happy to show you around!

    B) When we are away, the usual arrangement will be to stay in one of the bedrooms of the guesthouse on Senja and help for 2.5h per day. We don’t need any help related to welcoming guests, instead, we will mostly need help with simple housework, gardening, and running errands. In winter, a lot of this time is usually spent shovelling snow, so no gym needed 💪😅

    C) If you wish, it is often possible to combine your stay to spend some time in Senja, and some with us in our cozy apartment near Tromsø. We’d love to show you both places if you want to explore two areas. Just ask about your preferred dates and we can discuss what is possible in that time :)

    *********************************
    Availablility 2026:
    Now - 23.12.

    Requirements:
    - We can unfortunately only host during the indicated slots
    - We prefer to host for a minimum of 3 weeks
    - 2 people travelling together
    - Fluency in English
    - Driving license of advantage

If you send us an inquiry, please mention which concrete timeframe you'd like best, but also mention how flexible you are with the arrival and departure date to help us consider overlapping requests. Please also let us know if you are travelling by car or public transport, and whether you have a driving license. We are also interested in what else you are good at/ what you would enjoy helping with :)

Senja is a very beautiful place for nature enthusiasts, but also quite remote, so you need to know how to entertain yourself. Therefore, even though we will visit as often as possible and other guests might be there, we are looking for a couple or 2 friends travelling together, also to split the average workload of 5h/day between 2 people. Since both travellers will share a double room, the position is only suitable for people who already know each other.

    Things to do:
People come to Senja to go hiking, randonnée or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, SUP and kayaking, swimming, camping, (mountain) biking, or simply chill in the sauna or outside with fjord views. It’s a very popular area for photography enthusiasts, also because of the mix of steep mountains and white sand beaches. In the season one can pick blueberries, cloudberries , pr mushrooms while hiking. The region is also famous for fishing, so you can borrow our basic fishing rods and try your luck at catching dinner. There are also a lot of guided tours/ activities on Senja, for example boat rides, (ice) fishing, climbing, husky and aurora tours.
You can also simply wait for the Northern lights, or light a bonfire and BBQ in our Grillhytta, where we can enjoy cozy evenings even if it pours outside. For inside, we have plenty of games.
There are busses, but having a car will enable you to explore and borrow equipment more flexibly.
