    Description

Blessings and welcome! We are the a community, an ecumenical, Christ-centered monastic intentional community nestled on 250 acres of rolling hills, sacred forest, and meadows in Louisa, Virginia. Our life is anchored in the rhythm of Sung Prayer (inspired by the Taizé tradition), meditation, and the restorative power of nature.

We are currently in a "pioneering" season as we develop the Sanctuary of Sound—a neuro-inclusive forest refuge and musical park. We are creating a space where the world can come to find stillness, utilizing 100% foraged and fallen timber from our own land to build trails, gathering hubs, and outdoor musical installations. If you are looking for a deep spiritual retreat, have a green thumb, or have a passion for sustainable building, there is a place for you here.

    Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

This is more than an exchange; it is a spiritual, creative, and communal immersion:

You are invited to fully integrate into our monastic rhythm. We gather three times daily for Sung Prayer and meditation. This is a unique opportunity to learn the Taizé tradition and explore the power of "contemplative silence" in a fast-paced world.

Every evening at 6:00 PM, we sit down for a shared family supper. This is our primary time for interaction, where we share stories, discuss social justice and sustainability, and learn about the diverse cultural backgrounds of our visitors.

We hope to learn from you just as much as you learn from us. Whether you are sharing a recipe from your home country, a musical skill, or a new perspective on intentional living, your unique presence enriches our community fabric.

You will gain hands-on experience in neuro-inclusive design and radical resourcefulness—learning how to transform a forest into a sanctuary using only foraged materials and a "leave no trace" philosophy.

We view our Workawayers as an integral part of our community fabric. We ask for approximately 20 hours of communal participation per week (typically Monday–Thursday). Our shared focus includes:

Help us "paint with nature." We are currently learning to plant native species, designing garden entrances, and exploring Zen garden concepts. If you are interested in soil health and creating meditative outdoor spaces, we would love to share our knowledge of the Virginia landscape with you.

You will help with organising our shared pantry, restocking communal nourishment, and preparing family-style meals for the resident volunteer community.

Artistic Sanctuary Installations: Perfect for those interested in natural crafts and eco-design. Help us curate forest trails and craft seating areas using foraged timber from the forest floor. This is a wonderful way to learn about "radical resourcefulness" and sustainable land art.

Animal Care & Nature Connectivity: Tending to our flock of chickens, clearing forest paths for mindful walking, and the joyful task of accompanying our community puppy through the meadows.

Accommodation: Simple Comforts for the Soul
A balanced life is built on mutual care. While you offer your presence to the land, we provide a place of deep, quiet rest. Our spaces are designed for contemplation and are kept intentionally simple:

Secluded Forest Cabins: For those seeking deep quiet and total immersion in nature, we have simple cabins located a short walk away from the main Sophia House.

The "Quiet Caves": Private, secluded rooms with comfortable bunk beds—ideal for those seeking a tucked-away space for rest.

The "Garden Rooms": Bright rooms in the main Sophia House overlooking our deck and the peaceful water area.

The Essentials: To help you travel light, we provide fresh linens and clean towels. Each room is equipped with a desk, chair, high-speed Wi-Fi, and seasonal heaters or fans.

We speak the names of Jesus and God often as we seek to build peace. While we are interfaith and have no dogma, this environment is best suited for those seeking a contemplative, God-centered lifestyle. We require all volunteers to join us for our three daily gatherings of sung prayer (8am, 1pm, 7pm) and our communal dinner.

    The Neighborhood

Intentional Living: We are located near the famous Twin Oaks and Acorn communities.

Water & Nature: Just 15 minutes from the beautiful shores of Lake Anna.

Location: 30–40 minutes from the history and culture of Charlottesville and Richmond.

Transport: We have bikes available for the 5-mile trip into the town of Louisa and can often arrange pickups from the train or bus in Richmond/Charlottesville.

    **** A Note on Wellness & Discernment****
    Our Commitment to Your Journey:
The Community is a place of deep restorative silence and contemplative rhythm. While our environment is healing, we are a small monastic community and not a professional medical, mental health, or sobriety treatment facility. We recognize that many seekers come to us during times of significant life transition or while looking for a place to stay longer. To ensure the safety and well-being of both our volunteers and our resident community, we ask that those currently navigating acute mental health crises or active addiction issues seek specialized professional support.

If you are currently seeking a path toward health or sobriety and are looking for resources, Br. Stefan and our team are happy to offer a brief phone consultation to listen and provide information on local professional support services and intermediate care facilities in the Virginia area. We are here to help guide you toward the resources that can best support your healing before you begin a long-term stay with us.

Yes, with a mindful approach. We offer high-speed Wi-Fi and each of our rooms (including the "quiet caves" and cabins) is equipped with a working desk, chair, and lamp. We find that our contemplative environment is perfect for focused, deep work. However, because we value a monastic rhythm, we ask that our digital nomad guests: Respect the Silence: Use headphones and keep voice/video calls to a minimum during our designated times of communal silence and prayer. Balance Work and Service: Ensure your remote work schedule allows you to fully participate in your 20 hours of "Sacred Exchange" and our nightly community dinners. Unplug to Connect: We encourage "unplugging" during meals and prayer to fully immerse yourself in the peace of the woods.

We are open to hosting families who feel they would be a great fit for the silent, monastic rhythm of our daily life. Our current major project is the Sanctuary of Sound, a musical park designed specifically for children and families on the neurodivergent spectrum. We are working toward building a more family-friendly space while respecting the contemplative nature of our grounds. If you'd like to see what we are building together, please ask us for the links to our GoFundMe project site and our upcoming community event pages! We have 250 acres with lovely meadow space for camper parking. Please note we do not have hookups (power/water) at the meadow site, but you are welcome to use the facilities at the main Sophia House.

    Possibilité d'accueillir les animaux

Yes, pets are welcome! We believe animals are a beautiful part of a peaceful life. Since we live in a shared community, here is how we make that work: Our Furry Residents: We have a community puppy and several community cats and chickens who call this land home. Your pet should be comfortable sharing space with other animals. Allergies: Some residents have allergies, so please let us know in advance. We will do our best to find an accommodation (like one of our secluded cabins) that keeps everyone comfortable. Safety & Care: You are responsible for your pet’s food, clean-up, and safety around other community members. Nature & Wildlife: Our 250-acre forest is a thriving ecosystem. If you’d like a preview of your neighbors, ask us for the link to our "Sanctuary & Trails" page! We have live cameras capturing the awesome critters we share the woods with—deers, wild turkeys, turtles, and a variety of birds. It’s a great way to get prepared for the "wilder" side of life here.
