    Description

*** Just got my workaway page activated and still working on making sure all information is clear and that there are enough photos. Thanks for checking out my page. ***

My name is Hagen and I travel almost exclusively. I divide my time between the United States, Canada, and wherever my most recent travel destination is. Im on workaway because after spending 5 months in Japan I feel that I can offer Workawayers a fantastic opportunity to understand Japanese culture and way of life as well as sharing the culture from my own country. Japan has an extremely deep culture with a lot to offer. It has been an incredible journey for me to try and learn the way of life and I’m hoping to share this with workawayers. As a long time Workawayer myself I understand how impactful the workaway experience can be and see this as a really cool opportunity for someone hoping to see a slower pace of Japanese life.

As far as my workaway profile goes, I bought an abandoned house in Nagasaki, Japan. While it is in mostly good condition it does have a few quirks which you’ll see after reading my profile.

My house is in a centrally located neighborhood with good bus and tram access and beautiful city views. I am looking for someone interested in housesitting when I am not in Japan as well as some chores around the house which are further detailed below. If you are someone who is self-sufficient, responsible, clean, organized, and creative please do not hesitate to send me a message. Longer stays are preferred. I can host people for 2 weeks but if you can stay for a month or more let me know in your initial message as this is a big plus

Just for full disclosure, my house is up 169 stairs. If you are not physically fit enough to go up and down the stairs any time that you leave then this is probably not the best fit for you.

Nagasaki is an amazing place to visit for many reasons and I hope that you’d consider visiting. Some of the many reasons to check out Nagasaki are:
    - many beautiful beaches nearby
    - UNESCO world heritage sites close
    - world class hiking including connections to the Kyushu nature trail, with some trails literally just a few minutes away from my house
    - a top 3 night view in the world , part of which you can see from the bedroom window
    - one of the top onsen in Japan
    - many delicious foods like ramen, tonkatsu, and champon among many others
    - lots of international visitors year round
    - amazing cultural monuments and tourist attractions including the Dutch slope, Dejima wharf, first bowling alley in Japan, atomic bomb memorials and parks, churches, and more

This is a traditional Japanese home in a very traditional and aging Japanese neighborhood. I am trying to maintain my home in as close to a traditional way as I possibly can. You would be exposed to a much different pace of life and way of living that you otherwise would as a visitor to Nagasaki. Additionally, I can share weekly sports groups to play with locals, language exchange meetups, and local hang out spots. I can share my knowledge of Japanese cuisine, local customs, pop culture, and mor .

While staying in the neighborhood you will find that they residents are quite friendly and you will thus have ample opportunity to engage with local residents and learn about their lives in Nagasaki. Many opportunities exist to practice your Japanese will present themselves.

Also, I am happy to share all the recommendations of places to visit that aren’t as common including sightseeing places, locals bars and restaurants, and more.

As far as what I hope to gain from any Workawayer is to learn more about their culture in the country they are from whether that’s language, community, food, lifestyle, and more. I hope to have opportunities to practice my Spanish or Japanese with my workawayers and r even learn a new language.

I spent several years of my life as a Workawayer and understand the community well. I have made friends that I have now known for over 10 years and can’t imagine what my life would be right now had I not participated at a young age. I deeply appreciate the value that workaway can provide in broadening perspectives and appreciating all those who share this planet. I see this as an amazing opportunity to continue my experience but this time from the hosting side.

I’m looking for a person or couple who want to spend a little time keeping up with my house while exploring Nagasaki and the surrounding areas.

Some of the jobs you might be expected to fulfill include the following:
    - cleaning/ tidying up all the areas of the house (kitchen, bathroom, living rooms, sleeping area)
    - washing your clothes or sheets
    - minor outside tasks/cleaning (sweeping patio, watering plants)
    - potentially looking for new furniture or appliances

Essentially I just want my house to be lived in for the periods of time while I am away and would rather offer it to someone looking to explore rather than just have it sit unused and unappreciated.

The neighborhood is very quiet and the workaway would thus be expected to be respectful of the neighbors

I would greatly appreciate any opportunity to improve my Japanese. Japanese Workawayers are welcomed

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

My house is simple yet adequate - there is a fully functioning kitchen with hot water to wash dishes, a two burner stove as is typical of japanese homes, microwave, fridge, and pretty much anything you would need to cook with or eat on. It has two tatami sleeping/living rooms as well as several mattresses for sleeping. There is a standard western toilet and a shower room.

There are many attractions nearby including stadium city, cocowalk mall and movie theater, atomic bomb parks a short bus ride away, Nagasaki station less than 30 min walking, center of Nagasaki close including the hamanomachi shopping arcade as well as Chinatown. There’s a lot more that I can’t even remember right now

    Some other things to know:
    - Food is on your own
    - if you come in the summer and want to run the ac I may ask for compensation for that as it gets expensive quickly as I have a quite old and inefficient mini split in only one of the living rooms. I highly encourage opening the sliding doors to help with air flow as the house was uninhabited for quite some time and fresh air helps a lot.
    - I have a traditional Japanese bathing area (stool with faucet) but the water heater does not work (opportunity for skilled help here) so there is either cold water showers or you can bring hot water from the kitchen. So it’s a little bit inconvenient. There is an onsen very close by though
    - it’s 169 stairs up to get to my house so you’ll be in shape if you stay but also that’s why I have a beautiful view.

    - You will have lots of time off if you decide to complete a workaway experience in my home. But having spent several months in Nagasaki I can say that there is more than enough events going on to stay busy. Nagasaki is a moderate sized city with all that you might need close by without feeling overcrowded
