Description
We're looking for independent and fun-loving adults who share our interests and want to help us promote health and vitality through sustainable projects. We're firmly resolved to promote sustainable fun, and we're happy to communicate through smiles, grunts, and hand signs. We love meeting new people who share our vision for a literate, peaceful, and fun-filled world. We have an outside cat to keep small varmints to a minimum, but sorry, we cannot accept pets. We love smokers, but smoking is strictly limited to outside in the yard or on cement and brick areas as our structures are very old and wood-framed. We have three basic rules: 1) do not hurt yourself or anyone else, 2) do not destroy the environment, and 3) understand and be responsible in the area of consent in human relations. We expect our Workaway guests to respect our rules and requests without conflict, and we reserve the right to ask anyone to leave under circumstances of poor behavior or poor judgment. We have never had to do this, and we believe that mutual agreements can be reached through dialogue. Finally, we have a strict policy of no firearms or drug use.
We have many varied activities around the property focused on sustainable practices, including organic gardening, landscaping, cleaning, housework, painting, and, depending on your skills, possibly rainwater collection, solar, hvac, building & carpentry work. We provide opportunities to live and play in our dynamic local culture. We're interested in organic gardening and love to experiment. Our area is tough for vegetable gardening, with heavy clay soil, vigorous indigenous "weeds," and armies of competitive insects. We've experimented with "air pruning," healthy root promotion, and growing the bulk of our organic vegetable garden in grow bags. We've tried weed control with "weed barrier" cloth, and we've learned from the results that the thickness of the bags (and barrier cloth) is essential. We're always looking for new strategies to try, such as planting root plants like turmeric, ginger, and horseradish. We have a mature pecan grove, a few fruit trees, blueberries, and blackberries. We're focused on propagating a variety of plants, mostly indigenous grasses and small trees - timber bamboo is a recent project. We've been interested in organic composting and mulching for many years and focus on keeping our organic environment natural, rich, and vital. Since we have regular cultural events with lots of cars, we're interested in the impact of vehicles on the land and have put down over 900 ft of "GeoGrid" with the help of Workawayers to park without tearing up grass or getting stuck.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
From one of our exchangers: "There is something for everyone at their one of a kind property. Beyond any expectation, Jim and Christy shared so much of the local culture and their kind friends. I cannot get close to counting the number of folks I was introduced to. Some of which - Bill - deserve note for generosity of knowledge and enthusiasm for the local flora, introducing me to various trees, plants, and techniques for identification that I suspect I will recall many, many years from now. It was a delight to experience the nooks and crannies of Acadiana and to help in the development of their property. To sum up near three months seems whelming as each day was full of new experiences, learning, and plenty of laughs."
