    Description

    ===============
    This project is looking for people to come and join the journey we're on. Maybe you will stay a long time or maybe just for a few weeks...

    We're also openly looking for some permanent community members as of now or starting at least in the Spring / Looking for people suitable to supervise or share the project over the Spring and Summer of 2024! Think of a minimum 3 month commitment for this. ===============

    ⚠️ If you are completely inexperienced and unskilled you will likely have to commit to at least 3/4 weeks to be considered for this project. ⚠️

    We may only consider shorter term volunteers if they have transferable skills for example; carpentry/metal workers/sculpture/wood carving/landscaping/permaculture/ stonework background/ dog trainers/carers and of course it's always a pleasure to meet different types of artists; musicians, photographers, writers and filmmakers etc.

    Please only apply if you enjoy the company of Dogs. We have two small/medium female dogs they are very sweet and affectionate. We have a cat and plan on chicks/chickens soon.

    At this stage we're looking mainly for EXPERIENCE and SKILLS! However, we have some space for enthusiastic hard workers so your welcome to apply! Skills and experience have to start somewhere right?

    This project seeks leaders and experts to take some responsibilities, practical people who want to be creative and with the ability and ambition to take on a specific project that could run for weeks or months, perhaps even guiding less experienced volunteers towards success.

    Resourcefulness and problem solving are two of the main attributes required here. Using recycled materials and a mix of tools we have to find solutions as quickly/efficiently as possible. Sometimes we have to 'find a way' to get a job done! A sustainable project needs to be efficient.

    I have expertise in certain areas however, I'm not an expert in all fields. This project is a collaboration, therefore, with some discussion and planning beforehand, I'm happy to offer the platform and opportunity for people to hone their budding skills and explore their capabilities on various tasks.

    I'm also open to meeting 'project-sitters'; People who upon arrangement, and with some direction, can run the project in the absence of myself and any long term members; Spring through to end of Summer 2024 is currently available to applicants!
    - So care for the animals (cats, chickens) and of course, the plants and trees.
    Would you be able to look after the place? Are you interested in shaping and designing an ambitious project? Like to try leading a few volunteers or do you prefer to manage things alone? Do you want to experience this lifestyle from a unique perspective? Please message to enquire!

    About me; I travelled on a low budget for several years throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, and parts of Africa often working in seasonal positions, for example, in fruit orchards, to sustain my travels. Travelling really fuelled my curiosity; sometimes just contemplating life under a tree or in a hammock, sometimes watching it unfold before my eyes and occasionally getting involved in it too. I would like to help bring these types of experiences to anyone who has the inspiration to try!

    Somewhere along my journey I began to spend more and more time in many wonderful places though volunteering in sustainable organic type of farms and eventually I came to the decision that I wanted to create a little Eden too; Somewhere I didn't have to leave and where I could put my own personal roots in the ground and see how I grew.

    I am aiming for a sustainable project that both inspires people and positively impacts the environment, creating a food forest, using some permaculture principles and local ideas and I would like to share some of this journey I am on! I have knowledge in some areas like tropical tree care, a good level of English, an intermediate level of Spanish, as an ex chef I enjoy preparing food, I'm a landscape gardener and have a strong creative impulse in design.

    Personally I'm more of a creative type, so I'm especially pleased to welcome more practical thinkers or skilled workers to help execute my vision. However, everyone is welcome, if your unskilled please expect some menial tasks combined with some opportunities to try your hand at new skills. This is not a certified teaching program so please don't expect to be given constant lessons. With the right attitude you will be given a mix of tasks, some of which you will be given feedback on and the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skillset. I think everyone has something to teach each other; it's usually just a matter of how much time will pass before we discover what that may be.

    Please read the entire profile before asking to come! Please translate the profile if your English level is not fluent.

    We don't live in an ideal world, however, the ideal candidate is someone who would like to come to the project for a while, immerse themselves into the project and into the relationships here, both human and animal, plus stay here long enough to pick up some real knowledge/experiences and leave with some accomplishments behind you - with challenges faced and completed!

    This project is still very basic in terms of infrastructure but has some young trees in the ground and there is an Almond orchard already established. The amenities are very simple but functional with some quirky details and things are always improving with every day...this project at this stage is perhaps for the more adventurous type - people who actually want to be involved in the process of creating and designing and people who are not afraid to live close to nature. Perhaps its not suitable for a first time workawayer or if you haven't, for example, been exposed to simple living by camping or travelling in a campervan/caravan then the lifestyle may prove challenging. Then again maybe you've been camping throughout childhood and feel prepared to live close to nature.

    If you read through this part of the profile then please write the codeword 'Cactus'🌵 in your message 😉👍

    Everyone will bring something here and take their own experience away from their time here. I think that with different characters constantly entering our lives, we are frequently updating our learning on how to better share with and respect those we find around us. Calmness and patience are two virtues I welcome here but also an understanding that we are trying to reach goals and so when the time comes to work, we are not afraid to break into a sweat and reach for those goals!

    I think people will have an opportunity to see how a project like this develops and hopefully they will learn that, with some experience, its possible to do something like this themselves in future or at least be able to bring this experience forward to the next place they land.

    More specifically,I hope that you can learn something interesting, perhaps;

    - English words, language help, English Library.
    - tropical trees and their care
    - vegetarian or vegan cooking
    - composting, worm compost etc
    - vegetable hugulcultur beds
    - upcycling solutions
    - conserving and not wasting resources
    - natural treatments for health
    - Germination and seeding
    - Up-planting and ground planting.
    - Natural plant pest management
    - Mulching
    - creative design recycling what nature offers
    - digging tree holes
    - digging for multipurpose caves and harvesting rock.
    - problem solving skills plus many more
    - vegetarian/vegan cooking skills
    - to wear head cover in the sun 😉

    Please feel free to ask in your inquiry what we are doing at the time of your stay and what your interest is in and we can hopefully find you something to suit you are least part of your stay.

    The project is part of an experiment that attempts to work with the micro-climate that we have here to fulfil the needs of the different plants and trees we are hoping to see grow and excel. It is all a learning process that needs constantly updating!

    Aide

    We're particularly looking for people with good D.I.Y (do it yourself) skills. Carpentry skills are ideal. Please mention these skills and we can discuss what fun projects are possible!

    Welding skills would also be very useful.

    We also want to map the site and food Forrest onto a computer, if you have these skills let us know.

    In general online, internet skills as we never seem to have time to get to this part, website, social media etc

    Currently;

    Making a pizza oven using mud.

    We are raising pergolas for vines like passion fruit and grapes.

    In this moment we are trying to get the water irrigation system working efficiently and thus the 2nd outdoor shower working well and creating natural material privacy screens to stop wind too.

    Levelling the land, creating drainage channels for winter rain.

    Grey water solutions....creating natural filter systems using plants to clean the water before we utilise it on the food plants in the garden.

    -Alongside this 👆, wood working some ventilated storage boxes for foodstuffs. Anyone like to use recycled wood to make furniture? 🤗😆

    - Adding another ceramic fridge

    Future/ongoing;

    We're trying to create more ground-cover to stop weeds and bigger vegetable gardens in many areas ( seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting).

    Many people seem to really enjoy using a machete on the job of clearing the cactus! We are down to the last 5% of cactus now as the Forrest grows...

    Other future tasks ;

    - create a shade area for young plants and trees
    - create yoga/ meditation platform/ Zen garden
    - wind shields for young trees
    - Natural Privacy surround for outdoor shower area
    - Pagoda for Passion fruit vines
    - Pagoda for vineyard
    - Planting banana plants
    - Planting trees
    - install fencing
    - planting vegetables
    - planting seeds
    - composting cactus
    - pallet construction for separate composting areas.

    My priority is to improve my Spanish while at the same time not losing too much focus from the work on the land. In an informal capacity I have taught English to fellow travellers and colleagues for many years and now I teach English on the island in schools, my mother was a school teacher so it comes fairly naturally to me!

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

    The accommodation is also a bit of an 'adventure', it depends on what's available on your dates. However, expect to be living close to nature! It's only modest and non luxurious choices available here; everything from camper van, tepees, Double Bell tent, simple A-Frame wood/bamboo/canvas tents to simple 2 man basic tents, all available on site. Your welcome to enquire as to what will likely be available. Whatever it is, we will try to prepare it tastefully and if there is anything we can do to improve your comfort during your stay, we will try to help you!

    LAUNDRY/SHOWER

    At this stage we are just hand washing our laundry with Ecological soaps. I'm hoping to introduce a washing machine in Summer 2024. The project can range from very dusty to muddy if we have a lot of rain (rare). It's better to have clothes to work in and not your best set to relax in around the project. Obviously bringing some of your favorite items for going out etc makes sense.

    The shower is a simple cold outdoor shower from a garden hose. On cooler winter days it makes sense to use it after work. We have a hot water tank to install at some stage, however, its not been a priority given the very warm climate here.

    FOOD

    There are different options available for food in the exchange. I've had people ask just for accommodation and use of facilities. This is one option, however, I much prefer that everyone joins us at lunchtime around 2/3pm to celebrate our day's work and let us show out gratitude by sharing our healthy fresh food from the garden. 😁

    3 hours work per day - accommodation only

    4/5 hours work per day - accommodation and;

    BREAKFAST- use of facilities, fresh herbs for tea and if we have a good fruit harvest we will share.

    LUNCH - 14.00-15.00 After-work day healthy Vegetarian/Vegan

    EVENINGS; use of kitchen facilities in evening and sometimes a vegetable contribution from the garden. We don't always eat together in evenings, however, volunteers usually decide to prepare food together on work days.

    If you read this part of the profile please write codeword 'Casita' in your message 👍😉

    We're open to pets accompanying volunteers. I have have two dogs and a cat here at present but I have always been around dogs. It's important any animals are not repeatedly causing damage and are able to fit in with the people and other animals around the project and neighbourhood. As with most things, there is normally a reasonable solution to any issues encountered along the way.
